My drag is set properly and thankfully because the fish did pull it smoothly . Thanks for answering my question RW. That is what I wanted to know. Next time I will just let em take me for a ride. There was no brush so he could have gone where he wanted without getting me into trouble. Sorry Johnny don't agree with a super tight drag. Mine is set just right.....I just never had a fish take it out SO FAST like this one did. Yes I think the palomar is a better knot than the clinch but that is just in my experience obviously. I have never had a fish break off of my Palomar knot so I trust it and my tying it 100%. Why I tried to tie a cilinch when the Palomar has been my bread and butter is beyond me. Fate I guess. I'm not saying that the improved clinch knot is a bad knot......but me not having experience of tying one up cost me this time. Next time I will go back to my Palomar, even if it is hard to get it the loop through the eye. Not going to make the same mistake twice. i waas thikning about messing with my drag.......but i have a lot of obstacles that he could run into and mess everything up is an improved clench the same as the double clench?

i feel your pain......iv lost a smallie that felt over 3 or 4 lbs about 3 days this week!!! IT IS THE WORST!! My problem is the big ones know how to hide under brush and get stuck on logs and rocks....i actually got a 2lber in 2 days ago while he was still tangled onto a big 4 ft log......i just got it all out of the water to answer your question: (and you shouldnt listen to me because i miss more fish than anyone) I never use drag unless im fighting a sailfish in salt water (never have)..... i have my drag very tight, but these smallies have been pulling it out anyway....i just keep reeling in as tough as i can....i think that will work nine times out of ten i have a very light setup and some of these smallies are really pushing the boundries of my set up,......my rod goes into a circle when i hook one over 2 lbs,..... as for knots, i use a double clench every time and it does fine, im curiouse aotu that knot you said, you think its better than a double clinch

Just got some watermelon candy Eager Beavers.....they look like a cross betreen a oversized crawfish trailor and a fat worm.... question is, are these any good.....they smell a little too plasticky....and i dont even get how to use them cuz their flat on the one side..... are they used as a trailor, or like a plastic worm, they say they float

i dont have any....you dont need them....just use nice line that casts far caught 4 more yesterday....another over 2 lbs!

then its all about setting the hook always keep your line semi tight.....just enough to feel the bait when you get a hit, not on the hit, but a half a second after sweep your rop up....Not too hard, or you will rip it out of their jaw (something i learned here, and has really helped!)

I always fished these guys either weightless through the nose, or maybe with a drop shot, but still through the nose you'd be suprised, if you fish it the right way, its actually not that bad with weeds and stuff,.,,, you gotta let it fall a certain way, and the hook flips on itself as it falls...it like collapseson the bait as it falls.... you could use a Octopus troguh the nose too....i heard they work pretty good... im pretty sure their is another thread on this.....

The schukill river, where i go, in Trooper is getting crazy!! DOES ANYONE ELSE FISH THE SCHUKILL??? (I actually go where everybody says is a waste of time, they say to go to pawlings road in phoenixville), Where i go is very shallow, but every now and then a cast will reach the channell....i just re-upped on my good line, i was actually stuck using that crappy iron-silk line so i will be casting much further.... the 6 pound test i usually use is getting tough to use in the river,.....i use a very light rod, and yesterday was the second time in 2 days where that baby almost snapped.... TO ALL MY RIVER FISHERS, IS THE FISHING PICKING UP FOR YOU GUYS RIGHT NOW? It seems like from 5-6 the fishing just gets reaL GOOD..... a real aggressive bite... They attack the bait everytime it goes out.....but once you get 1 or 2 in , they slow down... 2 days ago the KUT TAIL worm was catching them like crazy......i fished the Kreature weightless yesterday...and they were hitting it so hard i lost a new bodypart on the thing every time..... funny thign was, i only had one yamamoto kreature left so i just flipped it upside down,,,,caught more....fished it with only 1 leg, ad caught another./..... the total outing i probably missed 4 fish, brought in 2, one was just under 2 pounds....other was under a lb....THE BEST PART WAS, ALL THIS IN UNDER AN HOUR OF FISHING So my question is: Is the river fishign always this good? or is it just picking up because its near the end of the season??? Does anyone else fish the delaware, or the schukill and noticed the fishing has picked up? IM GETTING COMPLETELY ADDICTED TO RIVER SMALLMOUTH FISHING!!! I HAVNT BEEN TO A LAKE IN WEEKS!!!

(a) The day where every other cast is a bass, just not very good ones.....dinks and med size bass...but action all day long (OR) ( The day where you dont catch nothing all day, and then BAM.....you get 1 in, a "lunker-sized" bass ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personally, im with ( even though i hate those slow days...... the way my flood starts flowing, and my hands start shaking when I might have my best one yet.....nothing compares to that.....that feeling of desperation "I NEED TO GET THIS FISH IN!" WHATS A BETTER DAY????

i always use the little jigs.....the bitsy flips....baby bouya...ect i use the mini craw gycb as a trailor, or the mini pork trialor you think im missing out or do these work i get them for 99 cents so i love them

i had these when i was a kid.....had to be before 04 though i never had any luck at all....the commercial guarenteed a fish every cast or siomething like that i just remember them, they had that flourescent green color......real obnoxiouse looking I SEE FLYING LURES ARE STILL AROUND TOO.....they were better, but still pretty crappy,,,,they seemed better for fishing from a boat

yeah, that second fish is bigger than the smallies around here that iv got in about the size of the first one am i losing my mind.....i c ould swear somebody on here said the river smallies at full growth weigh less on average than a lake smallie

it was weird, the ones I missed, after i brought the worm in, it looked like it was stained with blood in certain spots.... anyone ever have this happen?

KUT TAIL WORM.....7.5"....weightless with a 3/0 gamagatsu wide gap hook I missed about 6 in a row before getting this one in......one was definately a little bigger, the rest felt smaller the reaosn i kept missing them was slack line......they kept hitting it when i would let it go slack, so i tryed my best to set the hook, but it was tough They would hit it the second the worm hit the water.....my line just went instantly tight, like a zip cord.... amazing......for about 25 minuted, then not another one in no boat. by the way,....just my feet......i think it was when he got out of the current....it amazed me how strong that thing was

I caught my personal best river smallmouth yesterday out of the schukill river The way this thing fought steady, i knew it was descent, but when the fish was about half way in, it went into a burst of speed and felt like a freaking shark! it was amazing that burst of energy....the most power i have ever felt from a fish in fresh water after a good 4 minute fight, i finally got him in.... despite how big he looked, he was only 2.8 lbs???? suprised me, i thought it might be over 4 lbs.... iv heard that river smallies weigh less than lake smallies...... anyway, these things can fight like no other fish, when they want to whover said poiund for pound, the best fight was 100% right on..... I WAS SO ticked I DIDNT HAVE MY CAMERA!!! anybody else ever run into the "Burst of Energy" when bringing in a smallmouth??? it was about 3 X more strength than the majority of the fight.....this little burst literly almost broke my rod in 2....

" i love this statement...!!! very nice the little bits can help, because the big bass sometime will come in and take it from the little ones..... i would try it slower.....your probably bringing it in too fast the easiest GOOD lure to use has to be the plastic worm, from senko to power worm just put a buillet weight in front of a 2/0 hook (texas style) fishb it slow off the bottom and you will get something eventually....thjat was the way i learned to fish.... i think jigs are a little hard to work for someone brand new, they took me a while to learn
