Broken Off!!!

Y'all ever had a bass brake you while using braid?

I can remember it happening 4-5 times, the bass hit, went under a limb/log, wrapped a stump, buried in grass with such speed all I could do was hold on.

One the sticks in my mind was during early spring while flipping Buck Brush in 3' of water. Flipped a jig on 50# braid next to the brush, I don't think it hit bottom. I watch in horror as my line traveled 6-8' & around the base of 2 brush faster than I could set hook! I next saw a huge swirl like a commode flush & heard what sounded like a .22 mag fired & then limp line.

The huge swirl like a commode flush are always heart stoppers for me because I know that was a big fish.

Never had one brake off, but there have been a couple of times where I started off with fish and ended up using the lure knocker.

I've never been broken off with braid unless it was rubbed against something really sharp (like a pickerel tooth, something metal in the water).

Huh?  I see several.

Yes,  I've broke of several times with braid while fishing it in the rocks.  I've pretty much quit using braid when rocks are present.

Huh! I'm showing 0 & D-Hottie as the last, until I open it?

I have yet to have braid break on me. I have had a rod break while using braid when a nice bass wrapped me up in some pads though.

Braid verses quagga or zebra mussels doesn't work well. Casting heavy 3 - 5 oz swimbaits with braid can get interesting when you backlash! I don't use braid anymore for swimbaits.

Don't get to fish heavy cover often, most lakes in SoCal are deep rocky structure with sparse cover. When I fish the Delta or Clear lake braid is the way go and haven't broken any bass yet using it so far.....

I have not been broken off, but I use a leader so I CAN break the line when I need to.

Plug knockers are at least 95% effective on the lakes, but not always an option on the

river. Getting hung up below Pickwick Dam in strong current and boat traffic is the prime

example.

Broke braid many time but it was most always my own fault from failing to re-tie enough... Too often, I'll forget that it needs to be ckd too :)

There is a common misconception among many anglers that braid is abrasion resistant. Touch it to rocks, barnacles or pike teeth, and it parts like a drunk freshman coed's (well you know)...Once knicked, it's just waiting to fail once you apply any force. I even use a 30 or 40 lb mono leader on my frog rods (after loosing some to pickerel and these stupid things) with 50 or 65 PP, but to each his own.

I broke a big fish off in Suday's tournament. It's been so long, that I don't recall the last break off on 65# braid.  I'm going to assume one of two things... either it was a northern pike (somewhat doubtful, considering the fish came from a dock in 18" of water, or previously dragging that brush jig over a zebe encrusted shoal nicked and frayed the line.  I foolishly did not check when I got to the dock.  Cost me a win if it was a bass.  I've always said you have to be perfect to win, and here's the proof.  Shame on me.

I have snapped braid twice, both while casting a frog, so far never with a fish.  I use lighter line for frog fishing so I am sure that plays a huge part..

Seems as if many fish circle, or at least half circle, whatever cover is adjacent, whenever they eat.  They don't just run, they make some kind of turn around whatever obstacle/hide/cover is nearby.

Yup! We like to call Bass stupid. I say not so much. The biggest fish have a way of getting to the worst hang-up in the vicinity after they're hooked and doing exactly as "xbacksideslider" says.

$20 bills are the ULTIMATE topwater bait.......

I broke off a Spro frog on 50 lb. PP last Thursday. I'm blaming a Northern.

My girlfriend broke 40 lb. PP above the leader knot on a hookset yesterday. I have no idea how that happened on a Medium Ugly Stik. She got dem Bill Dance hooksets, I guess.

I like your idea. I'm stealing it.
