Surprised how early the catfish are active. Water temp of 43

Channels are always active, getting to be a pretty popular ice fishing species in certain areas. Hard to get the bigger ones through the ice with those big heads and hard fins sticking straight out though. We used hatchets to chop bigger holes the couple times I've done it.

Cats don't fight worth a darn in cold water. Around here, they roll rather than fight.

Another trout, this one a brookie. I was alternating between throwing some trout lures and also a suspending jerkbait for bass. I know both species swim in the waters where this is - it felt strange bass fishing in March for the first time now that bass are open to catch and release year round starting this year.

The bass weren't cooperative though, this was the only catch of the day. :)

Went down to the Ozarks this weekend to chase smallmouth but the only thing biting were the pickerel, an unexpected bonus!

Pickerel in the Ozarks? Never seen one down there. Looks like a healthy one too.

This one was from the Jacks Fork river but they were also pretty common in a couple lakes nearby.

I've never caught one, I'd like to sometime and that's not a terrible drive.

Ha! I’m sure you’ve noticed but when you close the gill flaps , a white bass won’t move a muscle. He had already been boat flipped

I have not, I'm also not brave enough to grab them by the razor blades like that.

Someone taught me that when I was a little kid, I can’t recall who but I fish and eat white bass more than anything else and it’s been good to me. For whatever reason it just paralyzes them. Grab just forward of the razor part! Haha. My buddies that try to lip them always end up dropping them once they thrash BD68DEAA-95AB-4D96-BF00-770EA09424A3.jpeg

AZ desert Channel Cats from my kayak. Live minnows, then went  to jigging Gulp Alive Minnows when we ran out. Gf and I also landed crappie, small largemouths, and chunky bluegills mixed in. Multi-species day!

They are back, been waiting for awhile. Caught about 20-30 the night before and 10 last night until the rain started pouring. d**n this SoCal weird weather. Anyway keep some 12” and this one for my wife. What size do you normally keep for crappie? I promised my wife will keep for her 11-14” and about 25-50 fish only in spring and fall.

In TN it's a 10" minimum for keeping. So I keep any over 10" haha

10-12 inches are about perfect. Once they get bigger than that, they're so tall that they're hard to fillet. Not that I hardly ever keep any, so I can be pretty selective when I decide to keep some.

Is that a stiper and a hognose sucker? Looks like a pretty solid striper.

1st fish of 2020 and 1st pike on a fly rod. 30” but skinny

Yes it's a striper. It was built like a tank. I'm guessing 12-14 lbs. And I guess that's a hognose sucker. I really wasn't sure what it was.

Got the boys out for some stocker trout before the 40 degree temps did them in.  Caught 3 and got the “biggest one in the city”.
