The humidity we’ve had for several days now finally broke today, so I took the kid out for some downrigging. We were only out for about 2 hours but managed 8 fat rainbows, 2 nice lakers and lost another half dozen or so. Kept a few of the rainbows and had a nice fish fry with visiting family this evening.

One of my favorite sunfish species to catch. Choked down a whole 5" General and got a 3/0 EWG hook in it's mouth all the way to it's eyeball.

My son just caught two of these off our dock last weekend. I thought they were just small dark crappie, now I know they’re warmouth. I’m not too familiar with these guys.

6poundbass caught his PB pike yesterday. Bigger than I’ve caught too. He was so geeked he was shaking. That thing put up a pretty good fight too but he handled things like a pro.

A local wildlife shelter recently put out a request to local fishermen for fish to help feed 2 bald eagles that they have taken in that are suffering from lead poisoning. It was a Facebook post and I got tagged in it repeatedly so I grabbed a couple ultralights, my floating bait basket, my little fishing buddy, and away we went. A couple hours at a creek later, we had about 70 bluegills and green sunfish flopping around in the basket when we pulled it and hit the road. They were very happy with our donations and Lake had a blast with nonstop action that the overaggressive panfish provide.

Switched gears on Saturday after chasing bass all afternooon Friday. Hit a 1400 acre reservoir for some crappie. Bite was a little slow with the heat and the boat traffic, and the late start to the day that we got. Still found a couple good areas and managed a nice limit of fish.

Took the wife and kid out for a troll this morning. It was SUPER HOT and very muggy out so we only fished for an hour and then threw the kid overboard for a swim for a bit, but we did bring home a handful of nice fat rainbows for a couple suppers.

I've caught several channels while casting and there's no mistaking them. Fast strike, frequently a quick detached sensation as they move toward you, then all heck breaks loose even on small ones. Great sport fish.

They have much better eyesight than most people give them credit for. Neat thing was we had been on this spot for nearly an hour catching crappie and white bass. After I finally had to make a change in tubes, I decided to throw on a purple one (we had been mostly throwing chartreuse variations). First cast nets the first channel cat. Only two casts later nets the second one. Are they attracted to purple for some reason? I have seen a study that suggested blue was the most attrative color to channel cats, so maybe purple being right in that same color band made the difference...or maybe just complete coincidence.

I'll give that a shot in one particular pond that gives up cats for me pretty regular. Caught lots of bass today with one nearly 4 lb. but just one cat on a Fat Ika and he was a bullhead. They hit plastics occasionally for me.

Got a few crappie and one of of the biggest, darkest longear sunfish I've ever caught this weekend.

The elusive New Jersey sheepshead, this one measuring a hair under 26”. This is the best of 4 fish I’ve caught this summer, the “smallest” being 22”. We put our time in this summer and are beginning to figure out how to fish for these unicorns in the northeast.

I don’t really want to follow up that beast of a sheepshead but somebody has to do it. My girlfriend’s mother loves catfish and we are headed up to their house next week so I’ve been trying to stock up. Thought about going fishing tonight but most of my friends were wanting to hang out at the local watering hole. Oh well, one night no fishing is ok. But alas! The watering hole is only 50-75 yards from the river so I set some hillbilly hand lines tied to a sunken dock and somehow we got one! Small frozen gizzard shad baits, actually had one line dragged up river but snagged and broke off

Found a topwater Wiper walking a Heddon Spook Jr, blast of a catch.

Just 19" but very healthy/girthy. I love smallmouths lb for lb but these things attack and fight with seemingly unnatural power. Let that "hybrid vigor" rain down as far as I'm concerned.

Went old school today for a half hour or so. Ultra light rod, small slip float and a bunch of freshly caught worms and we had a pile of these little guys on, just across the road from our place.
