I have increasing white bass and hybrid numbers in the harpeth river near me

How do you target them or do you just happen to stumble upon a school?

Well, it’s a long story between me and the white bass. I caught that one on UT campus, they make a massive migration upstream this time of year. You can see people fishing/wading the shallow mud flats intercepting them on their way upstream. I caught mine with a zoom tiny fluke on a jighead , others appeared to be using a marabou jig under a bobber and ripping it along. I also picked up several rooster tail packages off the ground so that must we working as well. Spoons and grubs are also great choices. These are fish that are hard charging upstream almost like salmon or something, they seem to love the shallow mud flats. There are staging spots they use where you can find a school of hundreds of them stacked up on top of each other, but that typically requires a boat. They will be in the deepest part of the river just before some shoals or flats waiting on the water to hit about 57-59 degrees. I’ve sat on a school many years starting in mid November and caught them pretty much all winter non stop until march or April when they hit the shallows and spawn. And when they do hit the shallows, it can be some of the craziest fishing youve ever experienced, they will usually hit a top water repeatedly until they get hooked. And then there’s summer, which can also be a riot. Once the shad fry hit the surface, usually 80 degree surface temp, they will chase the schools of tiny shad all over the lower end of the reservoirs. It can be tricky to catch up to those schools but if you land on one, 80-100 catches is possible . I’ve captured it on film a time or two

Very interesting

The river is known for being muddy so I'll have no problem finding a mud flat when they move up to spawn (I only have a kayak that is powered by myself and not an outboard so it might be tough to stay on top of them in deeper water)

I love using rooster tails and grubs so I should be right in my wheelhouse in that aspect

Thanks for the tips!

No problem man. I’ll look at a map of the Harpeth here in a bit, I’ve heard of it but never seen it in person. White bass is my spirit animal, I’ve lived off them for years. If I was to carve a totem pole, they would be on it

It's pretty small when it starts out.

The closer you get to Ashland city (which I live close to) it gets a lot deeper and wider.

Where it goes close to Nashville, it might as well be called a large stream

Ok so it flows into the Cumberland? There should be lots of white bass coming out of the Cumberland and running up all tributaries very soon. If not, they will be running up the Cumberland until they hit some good shallow flats or a dam

Growing up the state stocked hybrids in the big rivers in large quantities. Every spring when the rivers would flood the hybrids would hit the creek mouths and you could really get into them for a couple weeks.

We don’t have the hybrids here in the rivers, but we do in the lakes.  Some guys target them specifically.  I treat them as a nice surprise while bass fishing.  This guy was 24”+ on a big spinnerbait.

Yes it does flow into the cumberland

I only live like 20 minutes from where the harpeth and cumberland meet so I'll be sure to hit that spot

You ever tried breading them in crushed up potato chips (really, really good) or cool ranch Doritos (change your life)?

That's a bold statement I'd like to personally verify.  :)   I'll be trying the Doritos version at the earliest opportunity!

Long John Silvers! ?

The only Long John Silver's restaurant in my area has been combined with the only Taco Bell.  It is definitely the dirtiest, nastiest fast food joint around with the lowest prices and the scariest clientele.

I eat there occasionally...   ?

There’s one about 2 miles from me. I can eat their “ big catch “ fish sandwich, but haven’t in 10 years now at least…

Here are some winter pike I caught on jerkbaits!

Went to Bara de Navidad for 3 days to fish for Marlin and Tuna.  Only caught 4 small striped marlin, and no tuna.  On the way home to PV decided to fish for Rooster fish, and snapper.  Good luck with both.

Don't usually catch any crappie out of this lake, but I caught 2 Saturday, both on a Vision 110. This big black crappie makes that 110 look pretty small. Didn't measure it, but I'd guess it was in the 13-14 inch range. Sitting in just a few feet of water along the edge of a grass covered island.

Caught my first peacock bass recently, just under 5 lbs.

Pretty cool fish, caught on a Duo Realis Rozante 77sp.
