We got sucker punched on our annual trip to St Clair.  Cold front after a warm front pushed them out and then 30mph winds.  It was brutal.  A week later would have been epic.

Well that's a downer.

Whenever any basshead includes the word Brutal in a report, everyone has a pretty good idea of it was like.

A 30mph wind on a big bowl is just undefeated on making fishing darn near impossible.  Sorry to hear it, hope the bourbon was good.

I’ve been putting off doing a recap of that trip but I guess I should since I normally scream it from the rooftops.  If the way I am dressed in this pic says anything, it’s how the entire week went.  We did eventually find some fish but conditions were terrible.

I know what that's like, and I'm a ways north of that mess.

Either way, the pile of rigs on the port quarter tells your story well.

Hope the next ones better for you guys.

Thankfully the snot rockets have been very few this year. I wouldn’t be mad if I hooked into one like yours though.

Shhh they'll hear you.

Gonna be salmon in there in another month or two. :D

Yep, saw some guys trying to find a few early ones at the river mouths, also saw a dead one on the beach. Glad I missed that mess, I like bass better 😂.

ive floated the rivers in sept and all the salmon fishermen are nearly worse than the tubers

Oh yeah the west side gets shoulder to shoulder.  Right now the kings are running, and I'm staying home lol.  The last time I fished salmon on that side of the state, there were a lot of drunks and I saw a fist fight break out.  That's when I called it quits.  I've been fishing the Huron tributaries instead, and while the fish aren't as numerous, it's much less crowded to the point I can often find solitude.

I fished steelhead here on the west side twice in my late teens. Never again! Like you said, it was shoulder to shoulder on both banks. One kid unintentionally snagged one and was going to keep it. I thought he was going to get a beat down! Guys getting tied up with lines from guys on the opposite bank which turned into a shouting match. No thanks!

Later in October, go fish the Au Sable downstream of Foote Dam.  Not much traffic and cohos and Atlantics should be starting to show up.  Steelhead usually come in beginning in November.  You can catch those all right from the pier in Oscoda as well.  Go the day after a good rain and they'll be staged up right at the mouth of the river.

Is that the Crystal River? Edit: I see now, you already answered that LOL

I have floated and swam it many times, never fished it, but from what I have seen swimming it, you may have caught the biggest Bass in the river LOL

I live like 20 minutes from there, we manage a few properties on it, not many rivers with Smallies that look like that one...

You ever come back this way, let me know, can point you in the direction of some other floats that you and your Wife would love.

The historic flooding that’s devastated so much of Northern Michigan this spring

is finally showing signs of receding. It’s been over a month of high water.

And while it’s dropping slower than any waterfront owner or marine business would like,

At least there’s movement.

It’s been a frustrating stretch.

As a basshead, I live for the windows of opportunity April and May usually provide.

But with most launch sites flooded out and closed,

I’ve been relegated to sitting on my hands. I did manage a few local runs to some smaller,

unaffected waters—glad to have had that much, at least—

but it’s not the same as getting after the big water.

The bigger ramps are finally starting to open back up now.

I’m just hoping the weather cooperates and gives us a few fisherman-friendly windows.

This coming week is looking like it has some real potential, so we’ll see how it plays out.

Either way, I’m ready to roll.

New trailer tires are on, and the rig is dialed.

Fish Hard.
