Are you lucky?

Recommended Posts

I'd say that if you are one this forum you are. It means that you have the free time and at least some spending money to go fishing. And if you have a considerate spouse. I do and am so fortunate. This is a text conversation I had with her earlier. It reminds me of this song. Don't forget to be grateful and appreciate what you have guys. It can all change in an instant. If you have an amazing spouse, make sure you tell them.

What's funny is that like this song I got a new rod and reel this year. Can't complain about anything.

Being considered lucky is a matter of perspective and is relative to other considerations.  My sister-in-law once said she "wasn't lucky" and during the ensuing conversation, I gave her the following to think about:

In 30 plus years of going to Vegas & gambling, I have hit a Royal Flush on $.25 Draw Poker machines only 3 times.  Once was on progressive machine that paid $2600 instead of the normal $1000, a second was also on a progressive machine that paid $1400 and the third was dealt, with no need for a draw, after having a casino give me a coupon for a free play of $20.  With those results, would I be considered unlucky for only having hit that kind of jackpot 3 times?  Or would I be considered lucky for having won nearly twice the amount of money that one would have normally with those 3 hits (not to mention winning a grand off a free roll)?

In this crazy world, where nothing is promised... We are all lucky to even be alive.

Above ground = lucky. My father and grandfather both died young. My dad at 56 and my granddad at 50. I'm still kicking and can still enjoy a day out on the water. Good enough for me.

Yes I am very lucky. My wife is great. She never gives me any grief when it comes to fishing. Our first child is due any day now and all she says is "Just keep your phone on." When the baby is here I wont be able to hit the water 4 days a week anymore and I understand that, but she keeps assuring me that once or twice a week is in the cards.

I always tell her that she lied to me when we first started dating. "You said you liked to fish," I say. To which she replies "Yeah, once in a while, you want to fish every day as long as you can. You have an addiction."

I couldn't agree more with you on this one. My dad passed at 32 and my mom at 40. So I understand how short life can really be. I'm 34 and still here with a beautiful wife and lil boy so I consider myself lucky. My wife fishes and hunts and never complains when I come home at 1 o'clock on Saturday night's having spent money to not get any in return lol. How lucky can a man get

I don't believe in luck.  Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.  Everything that has happened in my life is a result of choices made either by me or by someone else.

All that being said, I am blessed to have a wonderful family and an outstanding wife.

My wife and I kayak together on occasion and she's never complained when I bring the "fishing gear"; she does not fish at all. On Saturday, we went out and I purposely did not bring gear to fish with and just paddled around the lake with her. I shared with her how I appreciate that she never complains about me fishing when out together and she doesn't mind paddling around and enjoying being out there. We "know" each other and the open communication is why we just celebrated 26 years together. If she ever asked, "Would you leave the gear home this outing?", I'd call it done! This works for us!

"Choices" and "luck" are mentioned above in this thread and I totally agree that "we" determined the outcome a lot of the time based on choices. But then we are all individuals and our wives are all different. The woman I married works with me and me with her... SHE's AWESOME; but not just because she let's me go fishing, she's truly a blessing!

One more note... My Dad lived to 75 and it's still hard losing someone close. NEVER stop spending time with those important to you. The fish will bite when you get back to the place you enjoy fishing. We get one go at this thing called life! Make it matter!

I consider myself lucky. Yes I married the most beautiful woman god has ever great and yes she is my fishing parter 90% of the time and yes she catches more fish than me 99% of the time. That's not the reason I consider myself lucky though.

Six months into college I was diagnosed with stage four cancer. A cantaloupe sized tumor was in my chest pressing on my wind pipe. A few days later and some radiation my back pain went away, mentioned it to the doctors and they found more cancer in my bone marrow in my hips, thighs, pelvis, tail bone, and spinal fluid.

I was lucky because I was put in Devos Children's hospital. I went through hell for 6 months, in a week out 2, chemo radiation, spinal taps, bone marrow taken out and checked. It would've been worse if I would've been put in the regular hospital.

I was the oldest there (I just made the cutoff), while there in the oncology department, it was all sick babies and kids. Kids who would never be the same because of their illness....but every single one of those kids had a smile on their face and everyone of them laughed.

I'm lucky because I survived yes but I feel I'm lucky because I got that reality check. I don't let things really bother me anymore. Life's too short! Life isn't about the material things, its about making every day count. There's always a light at the end of the tunnel. I don't always walk on cloud 9 but not much rattles me, I rarely get upset. I'm lucky because of my experience at a young age. Who knows where I'd be if it hadn't happened. I've always said if everyone could experience what I did the world might be a better place. Kids are awesome and don't let big things or small get keep them down. I hug mine a little tighter every night.

   I am the luckiest guy!

I'll be the one to say I'm unlucky. Being drawn the social anxiety (and anxiety in general) card, as well as the depression card, in a world that requires you to work and deal with the public tends to seem unlucky. Plus all the things that have been going on here lately. Life is sucking right now, but my fishing breaks are keeping me going right now. Spent about $300 on fishing gear over the past week.

Easy there Seneca. If you think you have never been lucky then you are the most self centered person I have ever known. I know that quote sounds cool, but if you have never had a bad storm just miss your location, catch a few extra green lights, get that fish in the boat as it came unhooked, or even made it to the john in the nick of time, then you have been lucky.

In fact, you're lucky your arm doesn't hurt from the patting yourself on the back.

BTW, YES, I have been lucky thousands of times in my life.
