Hey guys. I'm wanting to get a setup that'll fish the Ned rig nicely. I primarily fish with baitcasters. And the few spinning setups I have are a little heavier.

 

What size rod do you recommend? Medium? Med/Light? Action?

 

What about reel size? Ratio?

 

I'd like to stay around $175-$200 total.

I have played around with a lot of different setups for the ned rig.

I finally settled on a 7ft med light moderate action falcon BuCoo rod. $99.00 at Cabelas.

I paired it with a KastKing sharky III in 2000 size. $52.00 on Amazon.

It is loaded with 10lb power pro. I usually use a 6 ft. flourocarbon 8lb leader.

 

In my opinion,this setup works near perfect for the Ned Rig. 

It can still handle larger fish, but is soft enough to not tear the small ned rig hooks free. 

I lose very few fish with this setup.

It also casts a mile.

 

In a pinch it makes a pretty decent dropshot setup.

Any decent 6ft6in or 7ft rod in a med/lt or med. You also dont need a 2500 size reel.A 2000 size seams to work best for me. Just set the drag accordingly. 

A ML rod is best for a Ned rig. I use a 6' 10" ML/XF with a 25 size Pflueger Supreme XT spooled with 10lb KastKing braid. 

All good info above....winter I like 8 braid with six or eight pound leader.  Seems to get down in the 30/40 foot zone for me a little better.

For my spinning setups I like medium light to light.  I use my Shimano series 2000 reels with 6# fluorocarbon line.  I have 3 setups with a 4th on the way as I use Ned a lot and don't like retying to be changing colors.

I got both rod and reel used and it's a great combo to throw the ned rig. I use the crawz and the TRDz quite often fishing creeks in my yak.

For Ned's I have used, Med Light action rods paired with size 2000 reels and 6# Kastking Fluorokote. I went a little heavier when I caught some big Channel Cats on the Ned. A Med action rod with a 3000 size reel and 8# Kastking Fluorokote.

 

I also throw the Z-Man Big TRD on a heavier Shroomz jighead on my baitcasting gear and 10# Berkley big game.

I tried the M/L but it just did not work for me. Ended up up a Lew's Custom M/F paired with a 30 size Pflueger Supreme XT with 10# braid and a 7# leader. What works for one person might not work for another. You just have to try different rod/reels sometimes to see what works for you.

I use a Dobyn's Fury 702 and a Daiwa Revros 2000 spooled with 10lb Power Pro, and use Seaguar Red Label FC for leader in 6lb test for 2.75" TRD's, 1/10th, 1/15th, 1/20th oz Finesse Shroomz heads. It handles big fish just fine with a 6-6, 5-7, and TONS of 4+ lbers caught on this combo this season.

 

When I step up to the 4" Big TRD and the Power Finesse Shroomz heads, I go with my Fury 703 and Revros 2500 combo. Also spooled with 10lb Power Pro, and I use 8lb FC leaders with those.

Gear ratio isn't critical. If you read up on this technique (more accurately referred to as midwest finesse) you'll see that tackle is secondary. Technique is key. Ned himself uses very modest gear. As for lures, manufacturers have largely lost the essence of mwf to boost sales. It's all pretty basic and pretty much what finesse guys have been doing for decades.

 I do a very simple retrieve most of the time using a Cha-Cha type rhythm (crank-crank-glide-glide-glide) and find that a slower IPT reel helps me keep it nice and slow.  But honestly I don't think it matters much.  

if you are using the original midwest finesse retrieves, the reel does a lot of the work. 

generally a slower gear ratio works better for me. With the faster reels I tend to move the bait too fast.
