Goals for the winter...

Featured Replies

What are your goals for the winter and how do you plan to set about attaining them?

I have three.

1. Learn to walk a bait with a casting rod consistently.

2. Acquire more of the baits I like and prefer to use...ie:Zip'n Ziggy, Fakie Dog, etc.

3. Read 6 new books about river and creek fishing for bass of all species, but primarily smallies.

Fish more...work less!  ?

My goal is to catch bass in every month. Fished all winter with a few interruptions this past year. Dec. is my only possible obstacle coming up if we have a hard winter. I'm in IN and winters can be anything from light jacket weather to minus teens and thick ice.

Catch a bunch of Crappie with the occasional big Bass out of brushpiles and standing timber. Bundled up with some hot coffee I don't mind it until it gets below freezing. At that point, I turn in my man card and watch Football or movies...lol

I will try to trout fish some near home from Thanksgiving until the water gets hard.

My trailer bunks are not an issue but I’m gonna make up a new set along with my side guides and pop them on the first nice day in the spring. I’ll have all winter to find that ultimate piece of carpet to do it with.

I might want to install a some type of a GobeBe spotlight. Not sure if I want to do it on the bow or near steering. Tired of doing the hand held spotlight thing which has been going on for the last 40 years. But it’s not like I’m using a spotlight all that much.

Slap you for even bringing up the thought of that horrible word!!!?

1. Learn to wire tire jig skirts.

2. Reorganize my tackle/garage.

3. Hope that my less than 2 year old son learns to shovel the snow from the driveway.

To not put the 15 lbs I just lost back on...

Fishing wise, get all my usual winter tasks like cleaning reels done BEFORE the ice thaws. Work got in the way last year and set me back on some tasks for Spring. Also need to clean up my kayak fish finder wiring/ battery box set up.

Do you have to catch them in Indiana for it to count.

Yep. Wouldn't be a challenge otherwise.

Catch a 5 lb bass through the ice.

Tie a whole bunch of flies.

Don't have a heart attack while scooping snow.

My football teams seasons are always over well before winter begins

I live in Maine. Ice on the lake I live on gets 3-4 ft thick. I don't ice fish. Something about pulling a fish up through a hole in the ice on a string at 0 degrees. Not for me. Anyway...I do have a nice woodworking shop that's heated.

  1. Make a vertical, floor standing rod holder for my...many, ah... 4 rods.
  2. Get down out of the attic and refurb an old family Shakespeare casting reel that I last use when I was about 10 yrs old, in the 60's, just for the fun of it.
  3. Make some crankbaits. I've been watching 'marling baits' on youtube. A very interesting guy. Makes great baits. Shows the process from A-Z and has an interesting to watch personality. Anyway, I'm going to give it a whirl.
  4. Hit the Y every other day. Been doing that all year. I feel much better with it.
  5. Organize fishing stuff and collect some baits I've been wanting to try.
  6. Patriots.... nuff said.

To NOT spend as much money on fishing as I did last winter.

Catch a DD on a swimbait.

I only have one goal for the winter; Live long enough to see the spring. My plan is to stay away from visits to the hospital, or my heart doctor.  I figure, if I can avoid those I have a pretty good chance of reaching that goal.

Hoping to survive knee surgeries and be back in good enough shape to be able to fish next spring.

With out a doubt I am with Catt on this one but with a small change. I do not work anymore as I am retired And expect my cardiologist give me the ok to get back in the boat next week.
