Favorite football jig

Featured Replies

What are your favorite brand fb jigs.... dirty jigs? Bass patrol? sizes.... 3/4 oz ? 1 oz?

I Think you are going to get this reply a lot and it isn't because they are a site sponsor but my favorite jigs are Siebert Jigs. Absolute best Quality, color selection and attention to detail is second to none.

Welcome to BR.

Your question will be moved to the tackle forum.

Siebert Outdoors is the site sponsor and offers excellent variety of jigs including football heads.

What are you looking for besides conversation?

Make my own using heads I buy from Cast Industries.

My favorite football jig by far is the Dirty Jigs finesse football jig. One of the highest quality jigs for the price, highly recommend picking up some of these to try.

I don't use football jigs often..but when I have I've used the bass patrol ones and find them to be very nice for the price. They are cheap: in cost not quality.

A jig is only as good as the hook used to make it. How the components like a skirt is added or the type of weedgauard can make a difference preference.

Look at the basic Yamamoto football jig. Gary offers the plain jig with less expensive Mustad hook and premium Owner or Gamakatsu at a higher price point. The premium hook is always a better choice, the majority of off the shelf jigs use Mustad hooks because they cast less; .05 each V's .75 each for a premium hook. The Owner and Gamakatsu hooks are longer, stronger, sharper and smaller diameter wire then Mustad.

Football jigs are a casting jig not a all around heavy cover jig. The difference is important. A cover jig should be compact is size and have a heavy wire hook with a good weedgauard. A casting jig doesn't need a heavy wire hook, it performs better with a medium wire longer shank hook for easier hook sets after making a longer cast.

The plain GYCB football jig cost less then $1 each with premium hook. Adding a double tail Hula grub you have excellent spider jig that catches bass.

I would difinately look at Siebert jigs and Dobyns football jigs if a skirted jig is your idea of a good football jig.

Keitech and Dirty Jigs

Same here, the keitech is amazing but a very light wire hook. Comes in good colors and is tungsten making it a little more sensitive of the bottom in my opinion.

Paradise tackle 3/4 oz F.B. is my favorite. Really they only brand ive bought for the last 9 or 10 years.   Truly a custom jig down to the hook make, size, and gauge,  skirt material, color, hand tied, best head shape design IMO. I throw a fb jig alot. And paradise tackle is the deal. Its an Old school guy out of Paradise ,Ca only really has product in local shops as far as i know. Maybe, probably on social media  but i wouldnt know dont have any of that i just call him and put in an order.

I don't understand the popularity of Dirty Jigs. My late fishing partner used them and he constantly had to sharpen the VMC hook points a throw back from using jigs in the 70' to 80's before the Japanese jig hooks became available. The 60 degree flat eye design pulls the jig into rocks easier abrading up the line and knot. The silicone skirts slip back off the head. You get all this for $5 a jig.

With Siebert you get a premium Owner hook, wire tied skirts and hidden eye line tie stand up football head for $4 a jig. If I didn't make my own I would buy GYCB plain football jigs with Gamakatsu hook for $4.50 a bag of 5 and paint the heads or get Dobyns jigs with Gamakatsu hook, hand tied skirts 3 for $10.

I bought a couple, wasn't overly impressed with them. Was just looking at Siebert's offerings last night..I'll be placing an order asap.

Hayabusa Shooting Ball.  Its very finessy, with a light enough 2/0 hook to where I can throw it on a Medium powered spinning rod.  They come in weights up to 1/2 and ounce too which is great.

I assemble almost all of my own full size jigs using Boss components. They are a great bang for the buck.

Exceptions to this are when I need a really small micro jig. I use the zman micro shroomz jigs...they are kind cheap garbage LOL...but they work.

I will also paint and hand-tie skirts on Gamakatsu football heads for a compact football jig, and do the same with their "cobra 27" jig head for a really compact flipping jig.
