What swim jig should i use??

Featured Replies

I need some advice on types of swim jigs. I fish a bunch of ponds with smaller bass. Mostly 1 and 2 ponders with the occasional 3 or 4. I want to try using swim jigs since the ponds tend to be grassy. I am not sure whether to use a finesse swim jig or a regular one. Specifically dirty jigs swim jigs. I do not know what the bass are eating. I see plenty of sunnies on the banks but the bass do not seem big enough to eat them. I have caught fish on a 3/8 ounce chatterbait as well as 4 inch keitech swimbait (not the fat). Any advice would be appreciated.

Just use a regular one. A 1lb bass can eat any size bass jig it wants without any problems.

I agree with the guys above. The size of the jig isn't gonna be an issue because I don't think fish see it and have the same considerations we do.

Two things are more important to me than overall size: weight and color.

Matching bluegill patterns works really well for me down here, especially in ponds where they're more likely to be the main forage for bass. A dab of chartreuse will take you a long way some days.

In addition, my most productive weight is "light." I use ¼ oz swim jigs because I feel like I have more flexibility in the speed of my retrieve over ⅜ oz.

You may find trimming the skirt advantageous, though, especially if you're bumping into things and yanking it out of grass. Some days that little bit of extra flare and puff from trimming the skirt material that lays over the rubber band is money.

I use the Dirty Jigs swim jig a lot.......like every single time I'm out.  My favorite method is ripping it through vegetation.  I won Big Bass $$ at a tournament last Saturday doing exactly that.

I’m pretty new to swim jigs but have been catching some good fish on the green fish tackle one lately

I keep this really simple - if you are throwing on 15lb or 17lb line, use a regular one. If you are using 10lb line, use a finesse and 12lb can go either way.

I’ve had great success with a beast coast 3/8 swim jig with a rage swimmer.

What rod, action, power and fishing line are you using? They will dictate which jig to tie on.

im using a 7ft medium have fast action rod with 12lb flouro.

I’d go regular/medium wire. For jigs with heavier wire hooks just bump the line up to 15-20lb test and your good to go, cast’em and blast’em!

Edit: for finesse jigs I prefer medium power rods, with a mh rod and light wire hooks I’d stay away from heavier cover.

I use a 5/16oz North Star Customs bait original swim jigs. For color I keep it simple....white, black and blue, green pumpkin and new gill. For trailers I like Reaction Innovations Skinny Dippers. For gear 7' 4" Daiwa Tatula Elite MH/R and a Daiwa Tatula Elite reel and 10lbs fluorocarbon line....
