Having a discussion with another boater who tells me to quit using the Moto Stop and go with the old fashion transom saver to support the outboard motor while trailering the bass boat.

 

He says the Moto Stop puts too much pressure on the boat's transom while the transom saver places the weight on the trailer's center roller.

I'm in the old transom saver camp. Keeping the skeg and the entire lower section of the motor from bouncing by locking it to the trailer makes better sense to me and makes me feel better. There are certainly those that prefer the wedge, or Moto Stop and I won't argue the point with them. They can use whatever they like.

I have seen this discussion repeated so many times on so many different forums and the final answer is.......... your choice. No definitive proof either way. You even get varying opinions from motor manufacturers & boat dealers. The only consensus by all parties is to use one or the other. 

I use part of a 2x4. I’ve taken my boat on 6 hour one way journeys several times, it seems to work fine

150 Mercury EFI with no jack plate.

If you have a jack plate the traditional bar type transum saver does nothing but add vibrations. The Moto Stop design is a good, rubber pads to absorb vibrations, no engine bounce and easy to install. It's important to balance the OB so it doesn't add leverage to the transum. Consider this simple fact; the transum is designed to have heavy high HP outboard to push the boat at high speeds and lift the entire hull out of the water loaded with passengers.

PS, use the Moto

I used to use the standard transom saver for many years. When I bought a new boat in 2015, the mechanic talked me into a wedge instead. He said it served the same purpose and the cost was similar. The advantage was the small size of it.

I’ve never heard of anyone ever having problems with either.

 

Sounds like an imaginary problem with either that the contrarians like to debate.

Use whatever makes you sleep better.  I only used savers on light weight aluminum hulls.  Once I moved into better built, higher hp hulls with power trim and tilt, I haven't used anything.  Had my fishing buddies follow me numerous times, never saw my motor or my I/O drive unit bounce, not once !!  Even tried using the lower unit to see how much movement I could create, none.  The hydraulic trim cylinder holds everything in place with no movement at all, so....why add another gizmo ?

I contacted my boat manufacturer,  motor manufacturer and boat dealer.  None would say 'don't bother'.  However none said I needed one, either.

I had lock and haul on my Champion with 225 Merc.  It was pulled all over for 14 years with no problems.  I have my wedge on my 250 Verago.  It’s been going for 7 years with no issues.

My xpress came with a transom saver so that's what I use.

My Etec has a "motostop" built in.  Works great.  Have to assume it'd be better with a bit of shock absorption, but hey it's above my pay grade to tell them that they are wrong.
