If you check the wx, see for yourself, Otsego county runs a few clicks down the mercury meter all year.

We're usually cooler at my house than the official temp at MSP Airport 22 miles away. But they have the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers right there which does have a moderating influence.

67 here in the middle of the mitten, with a nice warm breeze from the SW. That big heat lamp in the sky isn’t out as much as I’d like, but I’ll take it. The channel that feeds my lake is open now and

The main part of the lake is OPEN! Our part and the route to the main part is blocked. We’re making progress. I saw another lake that was completely open and others over 50% open.

Clearly a solid decision.

Besides,  you wouldn't  want to catch these scrawny dinks anyway....5.84_Facial.png5.62_Facial.png

Got about 6 inches or so last night, on top of the 6 from the day before.

Headed out to clean that up in advance of the 6 we're getting tomorrow.

Did you notice the three 6's right there.

That can't be good . . . .

Only a dusting of snow for us down here. My lake has been completely froze for a week or two now and this morning I noticed I nice grown crack starting in front of our dock and running about 300’. There are a couple other growth cracks new this morning, so she’s making ice. The lake across the road from ours is still 80% open. With the warm up the next few days the ice production will probably slow down a bit which won’t disappoint me.

90-100 days until open water doesn’t sound too bad considering how fast this year flew by!

We got a few inches the other day - some more scheduled for this afternoon and tonight.

It has been a supremely mild winter so far here at this section of the 45th parallel.

Some snow but far below average.

Winter temps but well above average.

Hope all of that continues . . .

We've only had 11" of snow, and zero ice here.

I actually want some snow -

If it's going to be cold - might as well have some snow.

Don't care for or need the ability's to walk right up on my roof however

Not the case so far

Ya - despite the early start to our winter, that first batch melted away. Since then we've been above average in temp and below average in snow.

I like snow, but that couple inches that freezes and creates a minor morning inconvenience grates on my nerves.  If it's going to snow, then I want total devastation.  Make it a challenge.  We're tough.

This was a fun afternoon, only a few feet overnight.

We barely even have skim here in SE MI.  I was bummed, friend got me pumped for ice fishing and now we have nothing.  We will have to heard north.

There's a joke in there somewheres, but you didn't hear it from me.  ?

Things keep up the way they are, March 1st

Things here are warmer than normal - but enough ice has formed that the east side of Black Lake (part of the Minnetonka chain) is already being used as a parking lot for the ice fishers...passed by there Sunday afternoon and there was probably 25-30 vehicles ranging from Camrys to full-size trucks parked on the ice.

I don’t see any bitter cold Arctic fronts or major snow falls in the 10 day forecast either. So far, so good.

  • Super User

Ya - I don't know about your part of town, but we've had a bit of melting going on down here by the lake the last few days.

  • Super User

Definitely some melting here too. During which should be the coldest time of year.

I heard that there is a potential arctic slap of air coming towards the end of January. They’ve been wrong before though.

  • Super User

Cold snap has set in, shallows were frozen over, and I've seen some reports showing safe ice (not on any big lakes yet), so it looks like winter has arrived.

We are still sort of hanging in this strangely unfamiliar late fall-ish pattern.

Perhaps soon we'll slide right into into a couple of months of early spring

and miss 'winter' all together.

See KVD's updates on Texas? They're getting the snow we've been missing.

Today - 10am and it's already 30 - looks like a melting day today.

I’ve only seen three lakes so far that have ice anglers on it, including my lake.

The temp is very deceiving here. It says 28, but with the windchill factored in it feels like 15. I’ve said it a million times, the cold isn’t what really bothers me, it’s that d**n wind! Give me 0 and no wind and I’m fine. 32 and breezy, nope I’m done and staying inside if I can.

I just spent an hour locating an entire street out and now I’m thawing myself out. ??
