What ruins a fishing trip for you more than anything?

Featured Replies

Fishing line. Holy cow can fishing line really ruin my day. I’ve had the first cast of the day completely  go ballistic into the worst bird nest imaginable to the point of having to re-spool new line from scratch. Yes, I always have more than one rig with me no matter what kind of fishing I’m doing  in order to circumvent this issue, but most of the time I can bet money on the severity when it does happen. Even when it cast perfectly the day before. It never causes me to pack up and go home for the day, but it will really remind me of Darwin’s law constantly.

edit: Ill add that hooking into someone else’s old abandoned line in a brush pile/cover always puts me in that mood too.

Lines, bird's nest, equipment failure don't bother me.  Usually when that happens, 99% of the time it's on me...user error.   If a line or line/reel combo doesn't work for that day, even after the worst bird's nest, I usually salvage the line and use it to practice knot tying.

Stupid, malicious and inconsiderate idiots bother me most.

An irretrievable snag on one of my first few casts is what gets me the most.

Sometimes I have some really crummy days on the water but during times like these I try to remind myself how lucky I am to go fishing as often as I do.

I try and do my level best to avoid others as much as I can for that reason exactly. Granted, it’s not always possible.

When someone wrecks your trailer trying to pass you on the right while you are making a right hand turn.

Wind....I hate to fish in the wind, golf in the wind, grill in the wind, hunt in the wind etc, etc, etc.

And I'm talking 20-30 mph. Seems as though there is always a breeze in Oklahoma but when it is really windy I just don't want to be outside.

Garbage left by inconsiderate worthless people AKA trash leaving trash. Equipment failure and poor weather irk me in the moment but doesn't stick with me like trash. Another one that bothers alot of guys but doesn't bother me as much as time passes is the bent rod pattern...when a stranger sees you catching so they roll up on your spot. It used to tick me off to no end but then one day I came to a realization that changed my perspective on it. I realized these people arent on my level as anglers so they aren't worth my energy. I just move down the bank and keep catching them while they take over my hot spot and struggle.

Biting insects ruin a day faster then anything for me.  I am going to breakdown and get a head net this year.

jet ski operators doing massive donuts churning up the water so they can jump their own wake.

Ditto. I hate littering. Cigarette butts especially bother me. My skin crawls and I feel so gross stepping on or around them. It's sickening.

Also ditto on the spot thieves. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to. I just move down a little and keep catching while they keep casting and reeling in water.

However, I do hate when the spot thieves want to strike up a conversation and try to figure out what you're throwing and how you're catching fish. Call me insensitive, but in recent years I've combatted this by pretending to be deaf. As a bonus to them shutting up, a lot of the time it makes them uncomfortable enough to leave.

Ironically I currently am, but it's day 14 and it's been mild. I haven't had symptoms for days.

Getting to the lake and launching in that soft pre-dawn light, looking at the swirls of hungry bass getting breakfast, sliding the boat into glass calm water, and then finding out there's a serious problem with the boat that requires retrailering, going home, and spending the rest of the day making repairs.

That guy!

You know the one, he plays talk radio so that everyone on the lake can hear.

or the high schoolers grab the boat for the day and plays the music where alot of the language is cuss words and putdowns.

People. I don't even like seeing them when I'm fishing.
