Wow, that's quite the before and after! My daughter's pristine '04 Sierra with 104k miles will be permanently heading up to the salted winter roads of Montana this summer, and I hope it continues to hold up. Great trucks!!

Gross.  I hate those nasty bug splats.  They are difficult to remove.  Seems like a normal car wash can't do it.  Only a pressure washer or some serious manual scrubbing works.

  • Super User

@gimyep it seems the Florida sun bakes them on and luckily they are not the pesky Love Bugs that can take the paint off your vehicle.  I learned that lesson when I lived there.  Weekly washings were required when they were active.  Since we stayed on the beach for the whole trip, I also have that pesky Florida salt dew.  I only hand wash my vehicles so I can usually get stubborn stuff off. Now that I think about it, I’m going fishing with a buddy tomorrow on one of the lakes on Marine Base Quantico tomorrow, so I’ll probably wait until after that to get after it.

And now there's this ~ RECALL on the engine !

As it stands, my rig run great.

However it seems like it could be a ticking time bomb.

Not what I'm paying for.

Did way too much 'research" on this recall and it doesn't seem like

GM wants to publish the VIN's of the effected rigs.

So it's a hit or miss deal.

GM "SAYS" it only effects 3% of the engines produced during that time.

If they know that, tell us which ones !

Current plan is to drive it like I stole it.

If it blows up, the dealer told me I can drive 'something else'

until they can replace mine with a new motor.

As of now, there ARE NO NEW MOTORS laying around.

Not wanting to even go there.

If I could dump it today I would.

In case anyone's wondering

currently, I love this truck quite a bit less.

Product Safety Recall

L87 Engine Loss of Propulsion

Released: 2025-04-24

GM Program #

N252494000

Status

Incomplete. Remedy not available

NHTSA

25V274

Date Issued:

2025-04-24

Description

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain 2021 – 2024 model year Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, and GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with the 6.2L V8 gas engine (RPO L87). The connecting rod and/or crankshaft engine components in these vehicles may have manufacturing defects that can lead to engine damage and engine failure.

Safety Risk Description

If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash.

Repair Description

Dealers will inspect and, as necessary, replace the engine. Vehicles that pass inspection will be provided a higher viscosity oil, which will also require a new oil fill cap, an oil filter replacement, and an owner’s manual insert.

I'd be willing to bet that the 3% is a calculated number from a statistical sampling, not a hard production range of engines so they can't say specific date range 'x' is affected.  Having been part of more than a few post launch investigations, what happens is failures in market above and beyond what you'd expect.  You investigate and find something in the failures that either is out of spec or causing a complex failure that you didn't anticipate.  You know that the root cause is a specific measurement or item, but you don't know which ones have it.  In this case, it seems like something the dealer can check and verify so I don't see why you wouldn't take it in for the recall.  Either they are going to pass it and you know it is fine or they will fail it and give you something else to drive in the meantime (which means lower miles when you finally do get it back).  They aren't going to fail it and then tell you to drive it home.  If something happened after they told you to drive it they would be liable.

My neighbor just had his 6.2 replaced and the dealer had plenty of inventory.

Call Quirk Chevy in Braintree, MA. I’ll take you SMB fishing ….

  • Super User

I just dropped mine off at a local shop - I've had an oil leak that I've barely kept ahead of for a few months now, decided now was the time.

So that's gonna be taken care of as well as

Transmission tune-up

Transaxle and differential fluid change

AC recharge

Full tune-up - new plugs, gas filter, air filter, etc.

Neighbor is lending me his Audi A4 while my truck is in the shop

Na - he's been good to me for years. I let him park his trailers in my yard (his doesn't have the room), in exchange he mows my lawn and snow-blows me out in the winter...I love the barter system,

That's a bummer @A-Jay  : (

I've owned a couple GM 5.3's and a 6.2, but way back in the early 2000's. Great engines!

I'm not a fan of the AFM or auto-start-stop feature. Just give me a good old-fashion GM V8, and feed that pig!

I looked hard at the 5.3, 6.2, and even the Baby DMax 3.0 back in 2019 when shopping for a new truck. Opted for the 2500HD with the 6.6/DMax. Mine is the last year of that body style with the 6 speed Allison. It's not a daily driver, has ~59k miles to date, and runs like a champ (knock on wood).

I sincerely hope GM figures out the 6.2 issues quickly. Good luck to you!!

Thanks.

Seems you ask as bit more of your rigs than I do of mine so IMO, I think you made a wise choice. In the big picture, this is mostly an inconvenience,  still a PIA.

I am willing to go the long way to help eliminate risk, not just manage it. But this deal is out of my control and that makes my left eye twitch.

I'll vouch for that - mine is a 2001 with the 5.3 and other than the oil leak that just started a few months ago, it's been rock-solid with 230k on it at present.

Hope you get the issue taken care of soonest, @A-Jay - being without your 'prime' vehicle is a bummer.

It really sucks.  I almost opted for the 6.2 when I got my 2016 High Country but got a better deal on the 5.3 they had in stock.  The new truck sales manager was also a hard core fisherman and he told me the 5.3 would tow better and get better mpg while doing it.  I’m on a lot of Chevy sites and the numerous problems with them, more or less depending on year, has been pretty amazing.  Torque converters, transmissions, collapsed lifters, AC condensers, thermostats, and on and on.  I maintain my truck 100% by the book or better.  It pains me to hear of all the failures.  No manufacturer is immune either.  Lists of recalls on all of them.  What bothers me about your recall is that they are recommending a higher viscosity oil as a fix….Hope they get you fixed to your satisfaction because heaven knows, they can’t afford to lose loyal customers like us.

The stock 0W-20 is like water.

I dumped it yesterday and used the 0W-40.

Still pretty thin but better.

I am choosing not to take my rig back to the dealer until the day I trade it in.

If it makes it that far.

I don't want them testing it and then keeping it

leaving me hanging with some stink Azz cloth seated tank that I will curse every time I get in it.

Fingers crossed.

My '16 Ram 2500 Cummins is currently awaiting a $7500 post-warranty transmission replacement at 135k miles. It could be worse. 😆

With the current engine recall hanging over my head and still totally in limbo status,

(which has been bumming me out), I need something to get me excited about my rig again.

So today after my rather wet fishing trip, I replaced the OE GM paper & cotton mess of a filter

with K&N High-Flow Original Lifetime Engine Air Filter.  Comes pre-oiled.

I've run them before and have never been disappointed.

AT4 seems to be breathing easier and I can already tell

my right foot is starting to feel a little heavier even as we speak.

I kept the OE mess which they will get back once I trade this rig in.

If it makes it that far.

So in reference to the recall on my truck and a possible wonky crankshaft.

I couldn't take not knowing any longer, so I took it in to the local GMC service department today.

They ran 'the test' and my rig 'passed.'

Part of that is they changed the oil/filter and used 0-40 instead of the 0-20 that came from the factory.

Definitely a good thing.

Doesn't mean that there may not be problems down the line.

But at least I do not need an engine replacement now.

My next new truck date is at the end of November, so I'll be trading this one in then.

While I was there, I talked to the salesman to inquire about the new 2027 models.

It seems there's going to be a body style change along with a few other things.

Don't want to be part of that deal yet, so the plan is to order a new 2026 in the spring, switch the cap from the 2024 to the new rig and we'll be good to go.

I'll be right up against GM's last 'new build date' if I wait too long,

so the timing will be pretty important if this is going to work.

We'll see how it all plays out.
