When I cleaned out the basement last spring, I found a box of JDM reel boxes I didn't own anymore.  Tossed them.

Most of my reels have box either used or new. Some used reels don’t have box but if I want the reel, that is not the factor at all. I don’t have too many reels so having 15-20 boxes is no big deal. If any reels that are not in rotation either stay in reel cover or it’s own boxes. It is not about up the value of resale but to show you care of your equipment.

If collectible reels then that different story.

If it came in a box, I always keep it regardless if its swimbaits or reels. Just easier to ship out/maintain if I end up selling a reel or a swimbait.

I'm not really worried about it. I just wanted a box. Just searching to see if anybody had an extra box. No big deal, but I'm willing to pay for a box!

Although it’s not my cup of tea my wife is really into “Legos” as such she has shown me what some of the boxes alone are worth ?. Crazy to me but hey to each their own.

I couldn’t agree more with this,but I’m a little ocd with my fishing gear?

Might also be worth a shot to PM sellers on the auction site to see if they will sell you the box alone. Many are willing to.

I will not buy a reel in a plastic clamshell. A guy got me in a Nasci last year. I didn’t take it. Shimanos come in a box. At least all mine have. 3 days later I got one in a sealed box. He had the clamshell hanging. 
 

I’m not implying the clamshells are seconds but in my mind they are seconds or something. Why are they not in a box. There is no shortage of paper construction products in this country or places that construct these packing materials. 

 

I don't think shoes come in clamshells either.  They come in boxes.

 

I think it's just where they are intended to be sold.  Shelf or hangers in the store.  Traditionally, the box shoes were to be sold with human help.  Clamshell packages seem to be self-serve.

 

When I'm looking at used stuff I tend to avoid those with boxes, as I don't want to pay extra for something I can't fish with.  I see for sale empty boxes for like $10.

 

I've heard that there was such a thing as fishing reel box collectors.  Is that so?   Just on the off chance that there is I have a couple of totes full of fishing reel boxes and other fishing related boxes.  I keep them because they aren't doing any harm stacked in the fishing shed.

if you have anything fishing related from chapman(1800's), you may have hit a jackpot and not realized it. $15,000 for an empty box years ago.

 

I keep my boxes too, no particular reason other than I like stacking them near my tackle bench. I dont plan on ever reselling 

After paying hundreds of dollars for these reels I am keeping every piece too ?

Regardless of whether you keep the boxes or not, whether you mock it or appreciate it, they do help the resale value of the reel.  Particularly older reels.  I have about 150 reels at this point (perhaps a little more) and the boxes or cases that came with some from the 1970s or 1980s make the value skyrocket.  I fish alot of different reels and collect alot of others.  It is a hobby of mine.  For instance, I bought a particular Abu reel for $90 from 1982.  Also bought a box for the reel for $12 with the correct paperwork, etc.  Sold that same reel a few weeks later on an auction site for over $300.  If you have some rarer models, the values go into the $1,000s.  Just take a look...

hi friend, just pulled in tonight from fishing the coast flats for 3 days - I'll get a report on other fish species page later.  The speckled trout kill from the freeze was horrible, but we were walking on redfish, found an incoming tide pocket with 300 reds and limited.  Ate skin-on-grilled fillets.  

 

Knobs - the baitcaster single counterbalance is Livre, fortissimo knob on SB 60-mm-pitch handle - caught 16 redfish on that handle Saturday. 

 

The clear acrylic knobs on the spinning double handles are Avail.  The handle on the Tica is a Daiwa SLP 45-mm-pitch with IOS hex shaft adapter.  The handle on the Stradic C1000S is a Livre base with Gomexus 36-mm-pitch carbon.
