When I was younger, fishing from shore, casting distance was a big deal.  It always seemed like the target was just out of reach.

 

Once I got in a boat (any boat), it became less of a concern - I could just move the boat closer to the target.  There are exceptions (boiling fish, deep crankbaits), but having spent the last decade fishing a 12 ft deep lake with no shad for the bass to boil under, I don't think about it.

 

To answer the OP actual question, if you put 75 - 100 yards on, you will be good.

My casting average is probably 20 to 30 yards. My longest rod is 6'6" and I am sitting down while fishing. No way will I reach the casting distance others claim when standing up and using longer rods.

As for distance, if I want to bomb a big walk the dog I can sling it probably 50yd at most.  Below is my in-laws pond and I can cast from the dock to the corner marked which is about 150'.

Of course, I also enjoyed picturing someone trying to set a hook at 50 yards. 

90% of my casts are within 20 yards. crankbaits, maybe out to 50 or 60.

for those who say the average cast is 75 to 100 yards, I hope you don't bowhunt, because your yardage estimation sucks.

I can tell a lot of people have never shot a bow or played much golf. I would say my average cast is 50-60 ft. and maybe 100 ft. if I am fishing a deep running bait.

When people talk yards, you can tell who spent a lot of time on a football field and who didn't. Most people don't realize just how far 40 yards is, let alone 75 or more. A lot of guys think they can throw a football 60 yards until they step on the field and find that they're throwing 35 yards.

35?  Try 15 lol.  Most people don’t even realize how much energy it takes to throw to the sideline.  Madden sure makes that field look small. 

I think most people would be real surprised if you measured and showed them how far 25 yards really is. All of a sudden 90% of your whole fishing experience fits inside it. 

Okay.  I absolutely have to get to a field where I can measure my casts.  Half or more of a 145 yard spool should be 70 yards or more unless the maker is full of it pertaining to spool capacity.  Of course one has to take into account the bow in their line.  That is going to cut down actual straight line distance.  I personally don't like lying or being called a liar.  I'd like to know exactly what distance I am getting.

 

Somebody want to swing by with an empty pickup truck some warm, calm day so I can load up a few combos? 

 

I've watched videos of guys emptying their spool.  No way can I do that unless I put some 12# on one of the shallow finesse spools I just ordered. 

Guys I might record it when I spool the line by casting using Antares DC and my LV 500 or something else :), I might do it this Tuesday or in next weekend. also I have raphala line counter to get some idea

That's the thing, I don't care about anyone spooling their reel. Go to a football field and throw it through the goal post from one end to the other.

 

I'm not calling you out, I am just saying most people have no idea how far they are casting.

This topic always gets a ton of traffic. I knew better than to even participate. LOL

 

A lot of guys think they hit their driver 300 yards plus when in reality they probably average 260. 

Oh we haven’t even gotten into line types and which goes further. Friction coming off the spool and all that. Still clearing up the misconception that there are 12 yards in a foot. 
 

I just did my backing eyeball to about a 3rd, but I don’t do it anymore. As someone above mentioned, filling it full you can then respool to another and start over. I do that. 

Then there are 5-color braids offered by YGK and Duel

They are marked every meter and change bulk color every 10 m.  

Can measure right off your spool should it float your boat.

So you're throwing a normal bait like a senko 225 feet?

And a bullet weighted Beaver Bait with appendages a flappin' the entire way are sailing 300-375 feet? That's impressive! I'm not doubting you, but are you the Bionic Man? Possibly a sasquatch?

I don't know, I am going try and record my cast and back here to report. I have line counter, after cast ill use it to measure.

I only make 40-50 yard casts when it’s necessary to catch fish. Where I fish during day light the bigger bass are very  wary and long casts are necessary. Night and low light periods. shorter cast often work. The longer the cast the harder strike detection is.

Big 4-7 oz swimbaits using 8’ Heavy rods 75 yard cast isn’t unusual.
