I'm of Norwegian and French Canadian descent. I don't tan. I immediately burn. I've gotten second degree sunburn on my scalp twice during my younger years playing summer flag football. That was no fun either time, and now being older, it concerns me about the future. I'm very vigilant about covering up these days.

 

^ I'm with the Norseman there - Swedish, Finnish and German blood here - I turn into a lobster. Even on the hottest days I'm in long pants, long-sleeved T and a hat.

Remember as a child getting terrible sunburns at the beach, peel and repeat. 

No such thing as sunscreen and never heard of skin cancer back then. 

 

Fast forward and hearing many more cases of skin cancer, likely due to the ozone.......I smell like sunscreen all summer. 

I cover up as much as possible when I'm fishing - Long pants, long sleeve w/ hood and gaiter, hat, glasses, shoes, and fingerless gloves. Sometimes I forget the gloves. Deep in the summer I have very tan finger tips and when I forget the gloves I get dark hands.

 

I work outside a lot and don't follow the same dress code on the job site normally so I have more exposed skin and use sun screen. I guess just normal construction tan.

 

Thankfully, I have my dad's skin type so I take to the sun pretty well and get a dark tan pretty easy.

I cover up when I fish.  I find that keeping the sun off me leaves me less drained after spending so much time in the sun.  However, I like to fish bare footed.  As a result, the half of my feet that are not covered by my pant leg get really tanned, but the tan line is not very well defined.  What ultimately happens is that my feet end up looking permanently half of my feet are dark and the rest do not.  

Protect your skin.

Fortunately for me I tan well and rarely get sun burn. I still cover up as much as I can comfortably while limiting the time I spend fishing when it is very sunny.

Hit a pond while out running errands, so I was wearing boat shoes and no sunblock.  The bite was insane, so I was there for like 4-5 hours.  There already was a base tan from normal summer hiking, but the tops of my feet are normally covered so the tan line was crazy sharp.

i know something worse.  being on top of an 11' wide stainless steel duct line on the roof of a textile mill in south carolina during a late summer drought/heat wave, working 7/10s. 

 

anyone remember the toys that used to come in cereal boxes in the 70's? you put them under a lamp for a while, then they would glow in the dark. well, that's what i do.  i don't tan. i charge. hahaha

I started sweating just reading that

I forgot the sunscreen when I was out on my kayak the other day and burned the tops of my feet. Hurt like heck wearing dress shoes to work the next day.

 

But when I'm out there I wear a gaiter and bring a floppy hat and a ballcap (in case it's too windy). All of my fishing clothes provide sun protection as well.

 

Speaking of fishing clothing, I found a way to stock up on a few free shirts. Because I have "Fishing with the GM" outings at my hotel coming up the hotel owner agreed I should have fishing shirts with the hotel logo on them.

I am trying to do everything I can to get those tans to fade. I cover up every inch when I go out. Gloves, hat, full face mask, and often pants...and still spray down with SPF 50.

Farmers tan here and legs to the knees!  I wouldn't take my shirt off, the world isn't ready for that!?

I'm pretty religious about sunscreen in the summer time. Any time I forget it, or I don't put it on, i end up feeling like garbage later in the day. Then again I'm not really one to fish much when it's over 85 degrees out. Give me early mornings or dusk for that time of year. 

I can't help but to tan, even wearing sun block.

Same with me.

 

I use SPF 50 sunscreen on my face and by the end of the season most of my face is golden brown from my time on the water. Lighter from toy forehead to just under my eyes as my hat and sunglasses cover those areas.

 

My hands are usually tan as well. Looks like I am wearing gloves.

 

I get a crazy tan line on my legs from my sit-in kayak. I very rarely if ever get burned. I am diligent about reapplying sunscreen.

Same blood, but it is really hard for me to burn.  Makes it hard to remember to be responsible.  I am already darker than everyone around me and I haven't spent any time in the sun yet.  Mid winter I am white.

Yep.  My Keen sandals give me Tiger stripes.  I do protect myself with pants and a sun hoody.   With a bald head and my wife having too many skin cancer surgeries, I am way more careful now.  Feet still get hit sometimes.
