Saltysmalljaws
The jerkbait is legitimately my favorite presentation. It is a year round tool for me. Any time of the year apart from the dead of the winter, get in the wind, find bait and toss the JB and you’ll get results. With the depth ranges available it’s easy to call them out of 20+ fow. Also a shallow diving or high floating jerkbait has been a great alternative when the smallies Don’t want to fully commit to topwater. Long lining them is a great way to get more depth and approach a highly pressured or extremely clear fishery.

Super User Spankey Posted August 24, 2021 Super User Share Posted August 24, 2021 I think the jerkbait is a great bait and producer. Admittedly I’m not worth a darn at fishing it. My best results are from fishing it more like a crankbait.
JLBBass
crankbaits, spinnerbaits and jerkbaits are my favorite

White chart skirt with white and chart willow blades, or a white shad pattern with double willow blades. Blade color based on cloud cover. TheBasslayer
I caught my PB Smallmouth Bass on a dock with a deep-diving jerkbait so I can say I think there is nothing better!
Super User islandbass Posted September 8, 2021 Super User Share Posted September 8, 2021 Great job, NH! Hmmm. I need to build an arsenal of them. Never caught a smallie on a jerk bait. Sounds like fun. I have a couple of husky jerks and xraps. Any others to consider? What about line? Maybe 10# mono? As I mentioned in another thread, I have not even had a chance to target smallies yet. My attention has been diverted toward honey do list items or trying to catch salmon and cracking the code on late summer/fall largies as a shore angler. Both have been dismal so far but that’s just paying dues. Just not enough time in the day, lol. Maybe targeting smallies could provide a respite to my suffering. Zachh Nute
Personally, I love catching smallies deep with my Active Target. Video Game fishing is alot of fun.
Greyson
Yeah. The only thing better is standing in a river fishing a fluke, but that is practically a jerk air itself.
Fallser
With conventional tackle top water. But the best for me is hooking a 3 or 4 lb smallie on my fly rod with a top water bass bug. I use a 6 wgt, which is the light end of what most fly fishers use for bass.
OldManLure
I do love the bite on a jerkbait, but I haven't experienced any bite more exciting than on a topwater. I can't think of anything that compares to seeing it, hearing it, and feeling it. Boating it can sometimes seem almost anitclimactic.
Super User soflabasser Posted December 14, 2021 Super User Share Posted December 14, 2021 Nice smallmouth bass. For me nothing beats catching a big powerful gamefish on a topwater lure when it comes to rod and reel fishing.

Hopefully burning a spinnerbait will be up there If I can gain the confidence to understand smallie spinnerbait fishing. I’m going to start a thread on smallie spinnerbaiting now. cyclops2
Location location at SUNDOWN for 20 minutes. C & R with all sizes of SMB & a pike or 2. Away from the dock with reeds & loose rocks. Until 2 years ago. When they stopped Septic tanks pumping out the sludge... That eliminated all weeds. And the fish cycle. Before that ended . You KNEW the bass were headed right to where the lure would land. I took seniors 100' from the dock so their surface plugs would splash. B C reel heaven back then. 3 of us in 16' laughing all the 20 minutes. Then nothing.
PaulVE64
New goal for the coming season will be .... River wading a 6wt with a Wilderdiltch streamer that i hand tied that morning for a +3# smallie.

TonynswAR
I’m learning tricks for SM from a local where I reside part of the year, near Harrisburg,PA. Jerkbaits, hard an soft, the hard is a yo-zuri 3DS 70mm Ayu in the creeks and rivers. The soft is a white fluke tail dipped chartruese and nose hooked on a 1/0-1 drop shot hook. Have only been fishing for smalls for 4 years, PB so far is 18 3/4” on the Ayu wading in 2ft of H2O.
Super User Spankey Posted March 25, 2022 Super User Share Posted March 25, 2022 A nice 19-20” river smallie slamming a Chug Bug or Pop-R breaking the surface what appears to be 2 or 3 feet. But maybe actually was only 18”. But I’m sticking to the 2 or 3 feet for now.
Super User soflabasser Posted March 29, 2022 Super User Share Posted March 29, 2022 Swimbaits and spinnerbaits are also good lures for smallmouth bass.
