I can figure it out. Strict gun laws only apply to the honest citizens. The people causing the crime rate could care less.

I agree to disagree. Chicago has plenty of resources.

Today, the State Police increased their presence on IL highways because of a record number of shootings on IL highways. As of this morning, 185 shootings YTD on IL highways. A state trooper lost his life today via a bullet on Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway.

Let's not make this political, just educational.

What do you do to protect yourself and family?

I don't know what way is more unfortunate, but that IL Trooper death referenced above was a suicide.  Both problems need a society wide fixing and I wish there were simple solutions.

@MN Fisher if you get the chance, it's most definitely worth coming back.  If it was the mid 90's and you were at the Hot House or Velvet Lounge, sadly they are closed and certainly missed by me.  I think Jazz Showcase is now the spot for that neighborhood.  And if it's been that long, the neighborhood might be unrecognizable with the infill and lack of crackheads.

@Spankey the river gets real stagnant and nasty outside of the loop, it's improving for sure, but it's been small LM and rock bass for me.  The SM are in the harbors and way bigger, 31st, Burnham and Monroe being my favorites.  I've caught 4lb SM, seen coyotes hunting rabbits, and Peregrine's snacking on pigeons all within 50yds of this pic.  It's wild to see nature find a way to claw back into "our" world.

Look, I don't mind or care if Chicago is not for you, but if there's nothing positive about it in your mind, it's probably because you don't like any cities.  It's the lack of specificity, projecting, and ignorance in these absolutist and hyperbolic complaints that are most annoying.

My next trip will definitely be a great time as well. When we lay that out I want to catch both the Cub’s and Sox being home at the same time. Catching both teams. I had back to back day and night games last time with the cubs. That was a great time. We arrived early to the day game, a lot of employees working at the part are elderly locals who walk to work and a pleasure to be around. A gentleman who worked there took us under his wing and showed us around to different parts of the park and gave us a history lesson. Took us up to the open air roof top cafe that overlooks downtown and hung out with us there.

Everything about those few day went great. It was no disappointment but I like New York/Philly Pizza better. Water from the Big “D” and Skuke must be the reason.

I'm a Sox fan and even I can agree that Wrigley is special.  I haven't been since the big remodel, I'm sure its an even better experience.  I'm walking distance to Comiskey and have done season tix more than a few times.  Really hope these a***ole owners get it right and give us the season.  You make it down here and have time, you have to give south side, tavern style pizza a shot.  Phils and Pizza Fried Chicken Ice Cream are a decent walk from the stadium and are good representations of what we really care about.  That said, a good east coast pie is never something I'm gonna turn down, so I get where you're coming from.  Glad you enjoyed your stay, I know when work or life take me somewhere new, I love seeing how everything is different yet the same, love this country.

Maybe my opinion is biased, but there are actually some nice cities that I've been to.  Chicago just isn't one of them.  I'm not a hater of every single city in this entire country.

I would say the same thing about a city like Houston if someone started a thread about that city too.

I don't quite understand why people think Wrigley Field is so special.  Its an old concrete block that's covered in vines.  Just because its been around for like 100 years makes it special?  I have a friend that's been to almost every MLB stadium in the country and he said Wrigley doesn't even crack the top half.  So he actually has a wide basis for comparison.

If someone wanted to start ripping on the city I live in, it wouldn't offend me.  Don't take it personally @softwateronly.

Sorry that happened to your buddy. This crap is everywhere. I’m far enough outside of Philly but local news cover a story like this everyday.

I wish your buddy was behind the wheel and that guy stepped out of his car with a gun. Your buddy than running the guy right over with his truck.

It’s not just the inner city that makes Chi town undesirable.  I’ve been there many times and I have relatives who live there still.  I have a relative who retired as a top level executive and owned a very expensive house in Inverness.  He loved Chicago but could not get past the crime in government and the amount he was paying in taxes.  When you can’t keep the big earners happy, there’s no way to go but down.  It took him 3 years to sell his house and he is enjoying life in Florida.?

It's going to be an interesting situation.

18yo charged with murder. In IL, an 18yo cannot possess a handgun legally. In IL and, unless you have a CCL, it is illegal to transport a loaded firearm.

I'm all for someone defending their selves under the confines of the law. Guy had no business getting out of his work vehicle and the kid had no business carrying a firearm. I wasn't there and any judgement I could make at this time is ill-informed. Ability, opportunity, and intent must be present for a good shoot.

Isn't is 21 per federal law?

Not sure. I do know an 18yo can possess a shotgun in IL providing he has a valid FOID card. He/she cannot possess any long guns or hand guns.

Maybe its just the ammo.  That seems strange if you could buy a handgun at 18 but not the ammo for it though.

Which is really hard on the 18-20 year olds who buy a Ruger 10-22 or other small-bore rifle for rabbit/squirrel hunting...but have to get a parent to buy the ammo for them...since .22 ammo can be used in handguns.

Course, you can run .410 shot shells through a .44 magnum too - but 18 year olds can buy .410 shot shells no problem.

Crazy rules.

His handgun was not purchased by him. A 18 year old with a valid FOID card cannot buy a handgun. It was either purchased legally and given to him or was stolen and/or bought off the street.

Things like this happen every day in every major city in the country.
Chicago gets the most press because of its reputation and a long history of street violence.
It was the same when I was growing up as it is now, the only difference is inner city life has taken a turn.

People look for the easy way to get what they want, and with no respect for themselves or anyone else coupled with putting a gun in that same person’s hand who also has no conscience, it will never end.

You can run a 410 shell thru some 45 long colts not a 44 mag.

There have been 420 people shot in Chicago since Jan 1st. I live 20 minutes west of the city proper. Moved out 20 years ago. There have been 2 murders in my town in the last 3 months. The average annual murder rate is zero. In the past 20 years, I only recall 2 murders. One, a gas station robbery and the other gang related.

The older I get, the less BS I want to deal with.

An elderly woman was beaten to death with a hammer 2 blocks from my dads house on Tuesday. Happened right across from our favorite pizza joint. We were there eating pizza Tuesday evening and 2 of the plain clothed officers who were on scene earlier in the day also frequent the pizza joint were discussing it. I overhead the conversation and it's just really sad. Crazy thing is, this neighborhood is probably one of the safest  neighborhoods in Chicago. A good percentage of the residents are police and firemen.
