frog rod.. but not a beast?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for a rod to throw frogs, but not the typical longer, heavy frog rods.

Something between 7' to 7'3 preferably. This will be for just making short cast down the bank to cover. No grass to worry about pulling them out of.

It'll be a mix of holly belly frogs and others like the Ribbit.

Something with a light enough tip to cast easily.  I have several"typical" frog rods for fishing mats, but they're to much stick to be comfortable for this style.

I toss frogs on a 7' Diawa Aird-X H/F

When I upgrade - it'll probably be to Dobyns Sierra 705C...same line/lure stats as the Aird-X.

Falcon Lowrider Lizard Dragger 7' H.

The shorter 13-1/2" handle works well for me when walking the bait.  Nice soft tip.  Makes roll-casting a 1/2oz frog a dream. It feels a little light for a frog rod but I hit em hard and it takes it.

7'2" ALX Toadface. Heavy butt section, but a MH softer tip to fling the lighter stuff a long ways ~

I always use a H rod for frogs. Not so much for the cover (that's an XH) but to get a good hook set.

The ALX toadface is one to consider. I don't frog anymore due to some physical issues, but I loved it that rod for frogging and spinnerbaiting/swimjigging in a pinch. For me, it was the perfect balance of enough backbone for most heavy cover, lightweight/balanced for comfortable frog working, nice tip for casting and hookups. I would call ALX Rods/Alex and he'll talk shop with you.

I’ll throw in the Okuma TCS A 7’-3” hvy. Soft tip solid backbone.

Diawia Tatula TTU731MHFB

It will handle hollow bodies, Ribbits, & buzzbaits

What did you want to spend .. some great deals going on.

diawa aird x 7'H

not too thick or heavy, but stiff enough to set the hooks, short enough to be easy on the wrists.

ARK Tharp Money Maker. 7'3" Mag MH. Also a great jig and trig rod.

Champion 735 or Kaden 715 are great options.  Both are on sale @TW

Agree

As a co angler I need a smallish one also.
I had a Sierra 735 which worked well until I got the Kaden 715.
Completely different action but that thing will stick a frog!

I use the Dobyns Kaden 714C, I like a little lighter power, not really fishing heavy cover with it!

I was throwing hollow-body frogs on a Falcon Cara Amistad last season. Solid rod with a great tip to get them out there but super solid backbone to move them out if needed.

In 2022 I’ll be trying the Cara extra heavy for the same technique.

Also, you might want to check out the Expert line. Both lines offer very versatile options as well as technique-specific

I'll have to try comparing my Expert Amistad to my Toadface.  Probably wouldn't have thought to try the Falcon for frogs if you hadn't mentioned it.

OP.  Not the length you mentioned, but you could try the Tatula 6'10" MHF just for grins since you aren't looking to bomb the lure.
