Looking for fluero or mono

Featured Replies

I’m starting over with bass, it’s been since 2001 before I moved to Alaska Sure it’s the 10,th thousand time but I’m going to the store to put new line on my spinning reel president XT, I had braid power pro and it casted just fine but with my rod in the truck driving around for a few days the d**n braid got totally knotted up at my tip guide. Unbelievable! It was just unbelievable!!! I was frustrated as heck trying to get started with my fishing and I finally had to get mysizzors to cut the crap off! Right then I knew I needed to just go back home lol so I said screw it and had the darn stuff taken off the reel. I’m after fluero or mono that won’t coil too much! Thanks very much

Sounds like you need big game.

Nature of the beast - all mono/FC will coil...it's just dependent on how much.

Of lines I've used...

Trilene XL and Sufix Elite are the limpest monos I have experience with...others might know of others.

InvixZ and Tatsu are fairly limp FC lines...again, there might be others.

In any case - I use KVD Line and Lure on all my non-braid lines...seems to help.

That’s what I use the fishing for…..

For monofilament, I’ve found no better than Berkley Trilene XL as far as cast-ability, smoothness, low-memory and overall usability. For a spinning reel, I’d suggest 6lb test. Should be very user-friendly.

I would get the mono of your choice and go with that. Fluorocarbon is going to give you problems too. Sufix Elite is a good place to start for mono.

Fluorocarbon line over .010 diameter has too high memory for spinning reel sizes between 1000 to 3000.

Monofilament (Mono) some brands have less memory, agian try to stay under .010 diameter.

Braid doesn’t have memory issues.

To prevent the loose line flying around and tip wrapping keep the line tight. Easy method is attach the lure to the large rod guide foot or lure hanger, snug up the line then pull the center like a bow, then spin the rod a few times.

Expanding rod sleeve also prevents tip wrapping.

Soft mono like Sunline Super Natural has low memory, 10 lb test is .010 dia.

Tom

PS, Tackle Warehouse lists line diameter.

I like that? Now undelete your acct?

Thanks to all? The braid knot was because I need to take the rod down its 9’4 2 piece. Steelhead. Ugh! I bought a 7’ today . Instead of putting the 60 in my tank?. I went with trielene  XL 12lb??

Like Tom said above - mono and FC you don't want to go above 10# on spinning reels and less if you can manage it.

I actually keep it to 8# and under on 2500 size and smaller reels...only way I go to 10# is on 3000 size.

If that President XT is a '30' - that's a 2500 size...the 35 is the 3000 size.

Why ? Big game is not a bad line but it doesn't belong on spinning reels. Sufix elite would work well.

Despite all the people who tout BG as a good line - the only thing I use it for is backing on my casting reels.

Yes, but you use Yo-Zuri Hybrid which is the "big game" co-polymer equivalent.  Both test way above the rated breaking strength on the box! I am teasing you just a bit Ken!

Diameter not lb test.

Tom

When my favorite Sufix Elite is .012 at 10# - ya, it's the diameter too.

At .011 - 8# is iffy - but I'm using 8# InvizX on my President XT-30...and that's .009

#20 Big Game makes an  excellent fly leader for bass streamers

The xl I’ve used before but I’m budgeted so I got 12 only bc we have lots of pike here

  • Super User

First, I wouldn't drive around with my rods in the back of my truck.  Any line, including FC and mono will get wrapped, especially on spinning gear. I would invest in a rod sock. For line, 6lb or 8lb Invizx should work fine but left in a truck, it might get more brittle and coil. Some KVD line conditioner will help. I would not use Big Game on bass spinning gear. Good line but the diameter is too big and it will develop some memory.

I mean behind the seat xcab. Sometimes I’ll put them in the bed but only to fish within 20 min as my spots are close. Mostly inside the apt or in xtra cab

Hopefully your reel won't burp up a line-twist hairball with that thicker line. Try to avoid reeling in lighter baits on a slack line. No mono likes that, and thicker lines really don't. If it happens quickly, you may need to drop down. A pike can vaporize 12lb as easily as 8lb. Use your drag wisely and you'll be surprised what you can reel in with 8lb test.
