@PUTitinYOURmouthFISH I don't know if your post was directed at me specifically, but my point was that there doesn't seem to be many on this forum or on the pro tours.

I'm absolutely not against them participating.  I just want to clarify that.  My own Mother is a avid tournament walleye angler and fishes out of a Warrior 2090 deep V fiberglass boat all season.  We're all on the same physical level when it comes to specific styles of fishing.  Its not like you have to be an Olympic athlete to fish.

One specific type of fishing that offers a bit of a physical challenge that I encounter is muskie fishing.  It generally caters to a specific demographic which is young to middle aged men because of the tackle that is required to fish for them.  There is a bit of physical demand that is needed to handle a 9 foot heavy action rod coupled with a big round bait caster reel to sling around 15 inch lures.  For this reason I rarely see females, young kids, or old timers doing it.

Don’t tell Nattie Up North that women can’t handle Muskies.

I know they’re out there. When I used to take seniors fishing, most of them were female. As an example in a groups of 8-10 seniors, only 1-3 would have been guys.

They also had different goals. They were far more interest in bluegill and perch than bass and they were fishing to catch and eat.

And I most definitely obliged them and did my best to get them on their quarry.

I enjoyed listening to their stories of how they fished with their dads when they were little and many of them at the time I took them were already in their 70s and up roughly my dads age at that time.

One of them who I am still in contact with still would love to fish but no longer can without great difficulty. So if I happen to catch a bluegill or a 1-2 lb bass and I had the opportunity to get it to her quickly, I will bring it to her. She won’t eat perch however, and she calls them ringtails. Before that, I had never heard perch being called that before.

You give my wife a decent spinning rod and she will catch the biggest bass that day. Fav lures are a white cavitron in 3/8 or a 1/8 oz gold rooster tail in ‘grasshopper’. She will outfish you with just those two. She tells the bait monkey to stfu and hold. Her.  Beer.  She is from Chicago and is not to be trifled with.

These Minnesota women know how to fish. Nicole Stone with Nattie does some cooking in an ice-shack...fresh walleye - yum

I asked this question years ago too and at the time, there were none.  When you look at the professional bass tours, there aren't any females on them either.  Seems a little odd but its generally a male-dominated thing.

@ol'crickety may be one of a kind here...

I posed the question to both BASS and MLF as to why there were no females in the major fishing tournaments. Their answers in both cases was "We would welcome them if they qualified". Then I checked how you can qualify for either type of tournament....due to what it takes to qualify it is doubtful that many females would get the opportunity to successfully qualify as the whole system is rigged toward male competitors.

That's not what I said.  Re-read my post.  Sitting there with a giant sucker is not any physical work.  I was specifically referring to casting and retrieving giant lures with a 9 foot rod.  I can sit there and watch a bobber with a blind fold on and one arm behind my back while drinking beer.  That's how much physical work is involved using a sucker.  BTW sucker fishing is not permitted in a muskie tournament either so you won't see her participating using that method.

Well at least they gave you an honest answer.  It is my opinion that if a female wants to do something in a male-dominated demographic, there are two options: either get better, or start and join a female league.  Is there enough interest in a female-only version of professional bass or other fishing to get one going?  Probably not.  At least not right now.

How about catching one on a spinner from a kayak? That good enough? Right about 7 minutes in....

Yes.  That's legit.

Sucker fishing isn't.  You literally just sit there and wait.  And then wait some more.  There is absolutely no physical effort required to do it.

And just to clarify, I'm not against anyone doing it, including a female.  If a person buys a license and has the will power and means to fish for a muskie, bass, tarpon, etc, they can do it.  My own Mother is an avid tournament walleye angler because she grew up in an outdoor-oriented family.  I was simply stating that "generally" muskie fishing is a young to middle aged male dominated activity because of the physical demands required.  Obviously there is an exception here and you've proved it.

She's got vids where she frogs for bass from her kayak, she's fished tarpon in FL, kayaked on the ocean for permit and others....Nattie is the real deal.

Sounds like we've got a female pro bass angler right here in the making.  What is she waiting for?

She's having fun traveling all over, making vids - she's even got hiking/camping vids, cooking vids...everything outdoors.

Yes, I understand that.  Now.  At the time someone posted a vid of her holding a fish caught with a sucker.

My Grandpa used to tell me that when I go fishing, the sucker's on the wrong end of the pole. ? Honestly, he wasn't wrong...

My 13yo. son likes fishing.  He has no patience, is stubborn and will rage quite if he loses a good fish.

Advantage:  Female.  lol

(I know - partly their ages and not a blanket statement of the sexes - it's still funny though).

Have you ever tried muskie fishing with a sucker minnow?  Its like watching paint dry.  You spend 15 bucks on a sucker, wait, drink a beer, wait, drink another beer, and then wait some more.  Then when you're out of beer you go home.

I have not, I try not to catch the majestic musky. I’ve got a buddy that caught a monster with crappie jig on 4 lb line, I’m sure everyone went after him on Facebook…….

What do people have to do to qualify that is too difficult for women to do?

Howdy and welcome to the site.

I know a lady that is in her mid 80s that loves fishing, particularly saltwater. She has a barracuda mounted on her living room wall that she caught a few years back.

Hey, I'm the old woman of Bass Resource and I manage to catch a few bass. I have never understood why more women don't fish.

  • Super User

I’m not a woman but I highly respect the determination of a woman who was hard as nails when it came to fishing, my Grandmother.
I remember seeing her with ice sickles formed on the bill of her hat, lake fishing for trout.

She refused quit, when you went fishing with her, you were in for the duration.

The family joke was “ pack a lunch, or two, she going fishing.”
