Nice to see the sunshine today. It’s 29* out but the sun doesn’t make it feel too bad. Went out and tossed the pigskin for a while. My shoulder will be sore tonight. ?

  • Man that looks so comfy too ~ Not Familiar with winter ? OK, so it's pretty intense. Sort of like mudslides, wild fires, earth quakes, sink holes, flash floods and even land sides.

Same here for last night and all day today. Our power went out about 9:30 last night, crazy winds here. Still off now. I had to snowblow a trail from the barn to the house just to drag the generator o

Over the past few weeks we have seen temps in the 50's and 60's during the week, and below avg. temps on the weekend.  I'm hoping the January thaw evens things out a bit.

We’ve had the first two full days in a row of sunshine here in quite a while. Temps are more “normal” like right now at night ( -20c or so), but the daytime temp was right up around freezing and even above today in the sun. Feels more like March than January, and this coming week it’s supposed to get above freezing a bit again. Not a typical winter for us at all, but I’ll take it. My son and I did manage to beat the fields into a pulp this afternoon with the sleds, might be as far as we get in them all year, and that’s fine by me.

I got an all day rain on Monday, followed by an inch of heart attack snow overnight. Strange weather for January here, no doubt about it.

Also, I heard on the radio that the Twin Cities has not recorded a single night below zero this month.

Ya - but we're getting the water we need - even with only half the month gone, Jan 2023 is already the 8th wettest on record.

With just a few inches of snow left on the ground locally,

looks like we're getting a little more.

Thursday's Winter Storm Watch is calling for 4-8 inches with some freezing rain mixed in.

Once that mess blows out, day & night time air temps are expected to stay well above zero.

All & All still a pretty tame 'winter'.

I'm not going to call it lame because you know the snow monkey

probably would take that personally.

Ya - they're looking at 2"-5" for us here - then highs in the mid to upper 20s following...pretty mild, but we really need the moisture, so I'm not complaining too much about the snow.

I think you'll be fishing before April unless something drastic happens for an extended period of time soon here.

Have you heard any ice reports up there? Most of our lakes are open.

I don't follow any ice reports until we are at least on page 3 of the calendar year.

Also, and this might be sort of by design (insert self preservation),

There are No Lake Menderchucks on any road I routinely use during hard water,

so I have to make a 'special' trip to see what's what.

I would estimate about 3 inches of fluffy snow here this morning.  It is still snowing too.  At least its the fluffy, light weight stuff that is easy to remove and not the heavy wet white ketchup we have been getting lately.

The good news about getting a lot of snow this early is that its preventing the ice on the lakes from getting thicker.  You'd have to be insane to even consider driving on a lake with a truck with the lack of thick, safe ice plus all the slush and snow on top.  Really the only way to traverse many lakes is on foot or by snowmobile.  Its keeping a lot of pressure off the lakes this winter, which is fine by me.

Also, after the snow melts, it won't take very long to melt the ice.  I think its going to be an early ice out because of this reason, even with all the snow.

I'll have to take a pic of Black Lake - last time I passed by it, there were probably a dozen cars and trucks parked out on the ice, right next to the pop-up shelters.

Looks like some arctic air will be invading a large contingent of the country in about a week.

6-10 day temperature outlook January 28-February 1

I’m still hoping I don’t need to refill the oil tanks this winter, it was bad enough paying $3.50 in the fall, it‘s close to $5 now.

I'm less than an hour from Orchard Park and we have had no significant snowfall this year. Really weird. Not complaining though.

Holy cow MO has some cold weather on the way. I’ll be able to get in another weekend of fishing on the small lake I been on, but the weekend following, it might be pretty well iced, and I’ll have to look for something larger.
