Do I discard a fish if it has worms in the stomach?

Featured Replies

I’m new to fishing. I filleted a walleye. I didn’t see any worms in the meat. But I was curious and opened the stomach part and it was infested. Is the meat still safe to eat?

I'd cook the crap out of it if you still intend to eat it.  Aint worth getting violently ill if you think it has parasites.

Cooked parasites are 100% protein.

Yes, but if they aren't 100% cooked they will ruin you for a while.  That's why I said to cook the crap out of it!

I personally would not eat it, but to me its just the thought of my food containing parasites or worms or bacteria or whatever that would bother me.

I think once I had seen the worms in it I would not be able to eat it.

Although I am overly cautious, I have seen videos on both fresh and salt water fish filleted and had worms in the meat.  It seems to be more prevalent in certain species but universally it’s not a concern.  I’ve seen it in crappie.

If you eat lots of fish, don't worry you've already eaten lots of worms.

It's the little orange, hair looking things right in the center of the picture.

I wouldn't eat wormy fish, but I'm not a big fan of fish in general so take that for what it's worth.

The only two fish parasites I know of are black spot disease and the little yellow grub worms. Never heard of anything in the stomach and I guess the photo is just blurry on my end. I figured he mistook part of the fish intestines for worms

Sorry for the quality, it’s the little curly pink colored things. At least I think they were some type of parasite. I’m no expert but I’ve never seen that before in other fish lol

Thanks everyone for your opinions

It was my first ever walleye, and I was excited to try it for the first time as well. But not if I’m

 going to get sick :(
