Spinning Or Casting

Featured Replies

Most days, I have a M/F spinning rig and a MH/F casting rig with me in the boat. The other two to three rig could be anything, including duplicates (or very similar versions) of the first two, depending on what I plan to do. Some days, I never pick up either of the first two to fish with them, but I generally have them with me to fall back on if I want to.

I rarely bring more than four or five rods total with me. Too much clutter is worse to me than not being able to cover what I need for the day with four or five rods.

Do I regret not having more choices occasionally? Yes, occasionally, but not enough to constantly have to deal with the clutter of having more rods in the boat 'just in case'.

I mostly abandoned spinning, only using them for rock and general saltwater fishing.

I always used spinning reels but bought a casting reel years ago to give it a try. It gave me trouble from the start. Every few years I give it a shot again with the same result. Since I use a lot of light weight lures and bait even, I stick to spinning.

I hate spinning gear and  use it sparingly . I suck with it and lose a lot of bass .

Definitely not a one or the other thing for me.   Both serve their purpose and make fishing more enjoyable.

100% spinning for me.This past year I targeted smallmouth bass 95% of the season in a river system close to me.I strictly throw various soft plastics and jigs. When I do target largemouth bass in heavier cover in lakes around me I will bring my 7’Mh/fast legend elite spinning rod using the same lures (soft plastics, jigs)

100% spinning, UL to Medium rods, 3 to 10 lb., occasional 14 lb for frogs, for over 50 years. Fished bass club tournaments for 10-15 yrs. Caught the most lbs. and ounces one year and won a few tournaments. Besides bass, caught tons of speckled trout and white bass, plus several sauger, crappie, redfish and other species.

Largemouth: 65-35 casting

Smallmouth: 65-35 spinning

This would be close to my fishing also.

But I have days that I never pick up a spinning outfit as well as times a BC setup is not used.

I am probably 75% casting and 25% spinning but I have a deep soft spot for nice spinning gear. Something about a refined eggbeater that just gets me.

Maybe.

Ocean City 350 actually was a refined eggbeater

I'm 95% casting and seldom use anything heavier than a ML.  Light tackle is so much more fun to me, especially on a reel without a fixed spool.

I am 95% spinning. I feel I have the most confident and control of it. I would also say that is the ratio for most people around here. I do like my casting set up for WTD top waters, hard jerk baits, harder pulling cranks and spinner baits. So generally something with a harder pull wether it be the motion I am putting in on it or the lure drag in the water.

Funny I own 1 spinning and 5 casting reels. I use my spinning reel 75% of the time give it take

90% casting and 10% spinning by usage.  67% casting and 32% spinning by possession.

I really don't like using spinning reels, but there are times when the frustrations of using one are outweighed by the advantages.

Summary.  There is no right or wrong answers.  Seems everyone is correct.
