Best Wacky rig hook is hands down the Berkley Fusion with the fluoro guard.

 

VMC is possibly the worst.

I’m hoping a bigger hook makes gut hooking less likely. Doesn’t happen often but I’d like to eliminate it if possible. 
 

It is a very simple hookset. 

Gut hooking is very rare using a drop shot, you would need to be asleep not to detect a strike. weightless Senko’s it can happen.  

I have tried various wacky rigged hooks over the years. Gamakatsu weedless with the nylon hook guard isn’t very weedless. Owners original weedless wacky hook worked good but tended to snag brush. Owners Jungle weedless wacky hook with wire weed guard has a wider hook gap using Zo-wire small diameter wire very strong hook and is weedless. Cut off about 1/8” of the wire improves snag-less in brush. I use size 1 #4109 for all my wacky rigged soft plastics.

I don't know, I like owners mosquito hook or any wide gap short shank circle hook style without the bent inwards hook point.i think they are also called octopus hooks by other brands but not sure

 

For the weedless wacky rig hooks I tie my own on a mosquito hook with fly tying vice

You guys are confusing me big time.  By a wacky rig do you mean a straight worm hooked in the middle?  I can't say I have ever missed a fish using this technique.  If anything, the fish swallows the bait and it's nearly impossible to miss a fish. I fish this on 8 pound mono with a light wire #1 or #2 sproat style hook.  Are your fish big enough to get the worm in it's mouth?  What's up with this?

I think that's the issue that a fair number of anglers experience, not missing fish.  I prefer avoid deep or foul hooking them.  I want the hook right in the roof of the mouth.

 

I don't care for the "weedless" versions because they aren't very weedless.  If I'm using a stickbait in thick weeds, I'll just texas rig it instead.

A traditional wacky rig is a deadly bait in Florida especially during the spawn. Few bass can resist a weightless slow falling straight tail worm.  It's one of the best canal baits ever devised.  Bites around here are normally detected when the bait moves off.   By then the bass has the worm fully in it's mouth.  I never use weedless hooks with a wacky rig.  If I'm fishing weeds, I nose hook the bait with the hook point in the skin similar to a Texas rig without the weight.

This hook #2 and a piece of 3/8 shrink wrap around the middle. You'll thank me later.

I started using circle hooks when instructing the neighborhood kids and never again delt with gut hooked fish again. That was 15 years ago.

I went searching the forums for wacky rig hooks and found this old post a month ago. I just tried these out for the first time and they're GREAT! Are you still using them?

Yes I do, they’re still a great hook.

I use the spearpoint GP Finesse. My hookup ratio skyrocketed after I made the switch and when they get on there they stay on there.

#2 VMC wacky hook.... i find that the neko hooks get swallowed too easily and the wacky hook usually hooks up right int he top of the mouth
