What do you throw when bait fish are jumping?

Featured Replies

Newer fisherman here. Today I hit a local pond that gets hardly any pressure. It was dusk, light wind, and bait fish were fleeing bass. I was tossing a 2.5- or 3-inch floating minnow (about the same profile as the bait) right into the action and trying all different sorts of retrieves, but I got only a strike or two and no fish. What lures yield results for you in conditions like this?

Flashback Mini with a 3" Damiki Armor Shad trailer.    Throw past the bait and reel the thing as slowly as you can still feel that tiny blade hunting.  This is the best and easiest thing I've found, it's super finesse-e, and yet generates more than enough attention to get a Bass's attention amongst thousands of Shad.

Damiki Axe Blade is deadly too when it's a bit colder

MegaBass Vision 110jr and 110jr+1 are both killers but when it's a bit colder

Buzzbait produces the best out of all the topwaters for me in these situations in the warmer months, in the winter months they won't hit it.

Lastly, a Scrounger head with a matching bait profile size trailer is dynamite as we go into summer.

Walking bait and chatter/spinner bait. If those don't work Im throwin the towel because I've had little success with anything else.

Spinnerbait/Buzzbait/Chatterbait/Swim jig/Fluke/Walking Topwater/crankbait/Jerkbait/swimbait/glidebait/wakebait/frog etc etc

When they're really eating baitfish, you can absolutely crush em with reaction baits and it makes for some of the most violent strikes in bass fishing.

I usually try different reaction baits and try to narrow down my selection based on the conditions and area that they are feeding in and forage size color and profile and activity level and try to put the baits in the correct spots....just little details like that.  ?

I dont even know if they are still made but pond fishing with a spinning reel and bass feeding the old Storm Thin Fin was an absolute killer. That brings back memories .

Spinnerbait and run it just under the surface

Chatter bait or spinnerbait in appropriate baitfish size.

Weightless fluke matching the hatch...That or wacky senko

a popper.  i feel i got to make some racket to draw more attention to my bait.

i'm not good enough to walk the dog quickly, but my seizure like popper moves seem to work.

A swimbait that 'matches the hatch' on an under spin or propeller head
