Are Tubes Still a Thing?

Featured Replies

Was checking out a big box fishing retailer and noticed they didn't offer any tubes anymore (except for crappie tubes).  Is that a big miss on their part or are they just not a thing anymore?

Top 5 alltime on the river.

Can be popped, paused, or dragged on bottom, stroked at any speed thru the water coloum and as a weightless topwater.

That's interesting. I have only fished tubes a couple of times in my life, so never really pay them much attention, but since you mention it- I never see tubes at Wal Mart.

Tubes have been a staple in my soft plastic arsenal for years.  Both smallmouth and largemouth.  Lately, I've been using them to skip under docks.  They work very well for this because of their shape.

Hmm...

I would only fish a tube on days ending in a "y".

Next to TR worm, my go to is a tube when the hits are slow.

They're less popular than they once were, but lots of people still use them.  Though, probably not enough to justify counter space at some smaller tackle shops and stores with limited space.

I noticed Academy quit carrying them in the store years ago, same with Walmart. I visited a local mom & pop store and they had some Zoom tubes on clearance for a fraction of the original price. The bags were so old they were crinkly and the labels were peeling off. I bought way more than I should have. lol

Retailers focus on what's hot, not what's good.

Love tubes. I hope not

It must be the stores in your area. Most around me have a decent to large selection. I started using them last spring and have yet to have a bite or hookup with them. I’m not sure they will be in my boat after this year but I’m giving them an honest try.

I couldn't imagine chasing smallmouth without tubes. Catch plenty of largemouth on them too. On the susquehanna and  potomac a tube is probably  my #1 lure.

I've always got at least one rod with a flipping tube tied on. They catch fish and I rarely see anyone else fishing them.

I use a 4" Right Bite Flipping tube or a Strike King Denny Brauer Flipping tube. I have also used the 5" Right Bite tube on lakes like Toledo Bend, Sam Rayburn, and Caney Lake with some success.

Lots of people use them but people have kinda like left them behind a bit for a ned rig and a wacky rig. They still catch fish.

I flip em, use them for carolina rigs, also throw them weightless on a spinning rod and work em like a jerkbait. great action.

The tube is an original "do nothing" lure. I was introduced in Arkansas. The classic

presentation is to cast it out to whatever you consider a promising spot. Let the bait

settle, light a smoke and pop a top.  It's a Southern Thang.

A-Jay, what’s that tube & color in the bottom right corner of the right hand box?

Yup, still use them in early spring.  Have also had some luck inserting a floating worm into them and using a 1/8oz jig head in summer.
