We're kinda use to it, part of being Minnesotans. And this morning it's warmer - all of 9 degrees (grin)

 

I don't do anything with my truck, it sits out in the parking slot open to everything. Might be a little slow on initial crank, but still always starts. Basement is heated, so no issues with pipes at all as the main-line comes into that before branching off.

It's all relative. 

Some places get really hot,

other places get really cold.

Everyone either adapts or moves.

I agree with @A-Jay and @MN Fisher. I’ve lived here most of my life, it doesn’t bother me. I hunt in those temps pretty regularly. My vehicles are in my attached insulated garage all winter.

 

Its actually been quite mild in terms of temps the past few winters. What we’re experiencing now is closer to the norm.

 

I’ll take this over 95 and humid every day. I have minimal tolerance for extreme heat, but pretty high tolerance for the cold.

 

My house will still be standing after a blizzard or extreme cold. Not so much after a hurricane or wildfire.

First off I'm NOT complaining about the snow.

Simply reporting it.

For MANY reasons that I'll not get into here,

we need this every winter.

Average 150 inches a year and most of it comes before the Great Lakes freeze.

When we get less, there are MANY negative consequences felt the rest of the year. 

That said, here's the latest forecast - you guessed it more snow.

Exactly - with the lesser amounts of snow we've had the last few years, that has exacerbated the drought situation. We need the snow for the spring melt/soak in/run off to replenish the ground water.

Agreed.

And frozen lakes prevent evaporation which can be far more significant than I realized.

Lastly, with the several 'mild' winters in a row here,

folks are sort of forgetting why the year round residential population is so small.

So there are plenty of folks building new homes and moving up here.

Not a fan.

This is a not so friendly reminder that there's a 'price' to pay for what this place offers. Clearly, everywhere has it's own challenges, but this is NOT an Easy place to live.  Might be a better idea just to 'visit' the TWO weeks a year it's nice, spend lots of $$ while your here, and then go back south where is all nice & cozy.

Well, the "March of the Morons" has begun. Running an errand this morning, all three small lakes attached to Minnetonka (Emerald, Seton, Black) in my neighborhood had idiots on the ice even though they were all open water less than a week ago.

 

Then I find out that the Sheriff's Patrol has been cruising the shores and chasing them off the ice. Don't know if any fines were involved, but there should have been. 'Endangering public servants' comes to mind, as any 1st Responder will be risking their life to save one of these brain-dead Darwin Award candidates.

There was a tribe of native Americans that had a name that translated to something like “people that walk on the water” because they were known for traveling across frozen lakes. I wonder if their terrestrial buddies called them marching morons 😂 

First Nations people knew to check the ice for proper conditions before risking themselves out on it....these morons see a locked-in body of water and go "Oh good, it's frozen over, now we can ice-fish. Nevermind that the ice is probably 1/2" or less thick.

I’d bet somebody fell thru, but their death certificate was lost a few thousand yrs ago. And their first responder was late to scene

The issue is that most don't even bother to check it properly.  You need to start on the shoreline and slowly take a step further out, checking as you go with a spud bar or chisel.  Simply assuming that its of safe, even thickness tells you how brain dead people are.  It'll only get worse too as the ice continues to thicken because then people assume its safe for an ATV/snowmobile, truck, and ice castle.  Per the DNR website:

We are getting heavy wet snow right now , but it was 67 degrees yesterday so I don’t think the ground will hold much. Looks pretty tho 

A whopping 1/2 inch on the ground here this morning.

 

Wind chill temps by evening are projected to be -15 degrees.

This may be in my future - again.

We only got 3” of snow yesterday evening 2 of those 3 inches fell in an hour. Closer to the lake is getting quite a bit more. Today temps are 10* with windchills -10. A little too cold for the drills to run today which is fine with me. 🥶I don’t want to be out in this crap and I can catch up on paperwork at the office.

My son in law farms here in North Central Mo. He's told me how important the snow is for his crops. He's always glad to see the crop ground covered in a blanket of snow.                                                 This helps the ground, and makes it better for planting in the spring.  So far we've had just a dusting of snow.                                                 As for ice fishing here- out of the question, and against the law. If a conservation officer sees you on any ice, your getting a hefty fine. As it should be.
