You should try Earth Brite to get the tarnish off. It's clay based in a brite yellow and green container.

I just use Brasso for everything I want to polish up.

  • Mepps?  Been using them since the late 60's as a kid, fishing with my dad!   Today - I can make them out of various kits and parts & pieces from Netcraft in OH.   Right: A real

  • Thanks to all that responded.  Good to see the Mepps is still alive and well.

Rooster Tail, Panther Martin, Blue Fox and Mepps all have their unique designs and fish differently.

Could you elaborate? How do they all behave differently?

Anyone still using them for river smallmouths?

Not river smallies, but for the next twelve trips out.  I chose a Mepps for my One Lure Challenge.

That's a good choice.

I used to burn up those lil pine knot smallies at Elkhorn creek with the mepps bumble bee!

Can't beat a Mepps #3 when positioning the boat parallel to the bank.

Also a lot of fun on a ML.

Many outings last month, more than half the LMB I caught were on Mepps or Panther Martin's cast just beyond schools of visible baitfish and/or busting bass

I use a roostertail for everything everywhere from mountain trout to saltwater. 1/16 oz in grasshopper in the mountains to a 1/2 oz white with silver scale on the beach (and for stripers). They just work. Once I realized that many models actually come in a single hook model my life was ever more betterer.

I have not targeted bass green or brown with inline spinners but I can attest to my results using Blue Fox vibrax, Panther Martin & Mepps for pike. The blue fox vibrax #5 in fire tiger color with inside brass blade was an absolute slayer of mid teen through mid twenty pound pike across Canada. We had one day where two of us caught a hundred pike before lunch on Great Slave. It was a fish on almost every cast or so it seemed. If I had to choose only one pike bait to use that is the one.

You've fished Great Slave?????? Wow, Dwight. I envy your angling life.

@Swamp Girl yes Great Slave, Great Bear, Tree river, Talston river, Lake Munroe, Scott lake, Lac LaMarte, Georgian Bay and Lake Athabasca all in the pursuit of pike, lake trout & artic char. I was on a mission for sure. Great memories & a few trophies.

Right: A real, vintage, Mepps Aglia size 1 spinner.

Left: My version, a hair larger, size 2.

I use to sell Mepps squirrel tails back when I was a young teenager.. between using a spinner & a regular ole crappie maribou jig, both worked great.

I remember seeing the mepps ads  asking for squirrel tails in outdoor magazines.

They still buy squirrel tails.

My son regularly salvages incredibly tough days on a mepps!

I still get Mepps catalogs every year, and the last page is an add to send them squirrel tails. Count me in as an Aglia addict.
