Show me your old school tackle boxes.

I don't take this fishing with me, but I use it to store some of my extra stuff. I know it's not practical in todays fishing world, but I still love the old tackle boxes. Model 5940.

An interesting topic. Thanks for posting! I have one very similar to yours. Later on I may pull out my late father's tackle box. I still have it untouched since he died in 2009. I plan on passing it down to my sons one day. He still had his 1940's reels too.

I would like to share with you some Lynyrd Skynyrd tackle box history.

The lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd Ronnie Van Zant and his childhood frynd Gene Odom who he hired into the band as his personal bodyguard and band security, along with guitarist Gary Rossington were the bass fishermen in that band.

While on tour with Lynyrd Skynyrd Ronnie Van Zant, Gene, and Gary would take time off the road to fish where ever they were. So Ronnie carried a small tackle box on the road with him, and when the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crashed on October 20, 1977 it was found among the wreckage and made its way to band roadie Craig Reed who also survived the plane crash but cracked his skull wide open and has brain damage to this day because of it.

Ronnie Van Zant, as the world knows only too well, did not survive the plane crash.

But due to the demand of the fans, Craig Reed recently pulled out Ronnie's personal touring tackle box and went through each item found inside of it on camera showing the world what Ronnie himself put inside of it. And here it is... I hope some of you enjoy a look inside this time capsule from 1977.

The reason this tackle box survived the plane crash was because it was packed inside of flight cases that took the brunt of crash impact and was stored in the rear of the plane. All of the cargo and band luggage in the plane contributed to the injuries and deaths as it flew forward at 200mph hitting occupants during the crash. Some were buried under it and had to be dug out of the plane crash. Ronnie, being up front in the plane was under all of it. If only history could have been different.

Had go pretty deep into the archives for this one.

The vaulted Plano 777.

I lugged this monster all over northern New England for many years.

Plano 8616 'Hip Roof'. They still make it, you can still buy one, but I got mine back in the 80s and sold it a couple years ago to a member here who collects old boxes.

I've also got a couple old Plano 6203's (3 tray) hanging about that I use for tool boxes...both are 40+ years old.

I’ll have to get mine all cleaned up for photos. I’ve got everything from steel “Old Pal” and JC Higgins boxes to Fenwick, Rebel and Plano classics. Even a Woodstream “Bass Boss”.  In addition to family heirlooms, I can’t find one at a thrift store or yard sale without it following me home.

One of the many old school Rebel tackle boxes!

Great topic! Man I wish I still had my first. I can see it in my mind lol. Blue and gray Plano. But the most memorable was an old Shimano 3600 bag that held 4-6?? Boxes. I wore that thing out as a kid fishing piers in Florida saltwater. The sun eventually  degraded it to the point it fell apart.

I still use my Dad's box from the 1950s.  It stores my tackle (except soft plastics) and reels.  When I get to where I plan on fishing, I transfer what I need to a small bait bag.

It's a small way to remember my Dad every time I fish.

My dad still has all of the old ones but when he pawned a bunch of gear off in my I got the planos we used in the early 90’s. There’s another over under in my basement also. This one is like brand new.

My first tackle box was an Umco that my parents bought me for pitching a no hitter in Little League in about 1953.  I still use a Worm Expert from the early 80s.  I also have a bag that holds 4 3700s and 2 3600s for salt water.

HOLY COW that's very similar to my first tackle box I bought myself. Oh the memories!!!

Except mine had two drawers that slid out on the bottom, if I remember correctly.

If I had to guess, I bought it in the late 80's.

I backed over it in my first car, two toned blue station wagon and busted it up. Took out a couple of fishing poles as well.  :(

My wife got me this for my birthday,  it's just like my first tackle box. I am putting my old Bombers in it, doesn't seem right to put anything new in there.

I have a couple of those I use for salt water.  I also have a wood box that has a panel on the front that unlatches and swings down to expose a drawer and an open place in the bottom for larger stuff.

I had a satchel box when I was a kid. It wasn't double sided, but it had a top and bottom compartment. Long gone now.

The Dutch Masters cigar box makes it complete. 😁 My dad smoked them and I had several of them as a kid. I kept everything in the from baseball cards to my secret stash of money (about $20).

Yes in every single compartment.
