it was so fun!!!  I didnt expect it to be so fun!!   I got caught up in all the excitement and ran the entire thing non-stop.  up and over hills and everything.

ran with a friend and we slowly started picking off other runners.

I ran a 9 minute 25 second pace!!  ran the 10k and did it under an hour.    that is faster and farther than anything I have ever done in my life.

so I celebrated with small tiny beers.  the race was sponsored by beer.  hahahha..

That's outstanding for any 10k, especially your first one.  Congrats.  You are putting in the work.

Awesome dude! 9:25 miles is not bad at all!

Running can be contagious. The more you do the better it gets.

Up next for you is a half marathon! Keep it going.

A severe reaction to statin cholesterol medicine permanently damaged my legs. Before that, half marathons, but my favorite was the 10k. I miss the “runner’s high.” Enjoy it!

Congrats!  That’s a great pace.

I find running is like a virus.  it makes me feel like crap, there is nothing you can do but let the hurt run its course, and hope you never come in contact with it again.

FWIW, I ran a couple halves, a couple 5-10k, a pair of tough mudders (hilly ~half marathon with obstacles), and a couple triathlons.  I think the runners high is someone smoked something before they went for a run.  Never got to me.

we are signing up for the next 10k after a group chat tomorrow.

I like it.  I like it a lot.

I dont think I'll ever do a half marathon.  I won't say never, but it seems kinda long. :D

I did a few 5Ks & 10Ks before the bug got to me. Ended up running two halfs before I tried a regular marathon. I considered it a top accomplishment to finish that. I wanted to run Boston but could not qualify based on their requirements. Couldn't win a lottery for entry to NY so I ran the Chicago Marathon. Steve Jones set the new word record in that race something like 2 hrs & 8 min in 1984. I laughed about it afterwards because he was finished probably drinking a beer while I was still out there around the halfway point slugging it out. Took me just under 4 hours to finish.

The difference between a 10k and a half marathon is in the practice/training.  The actual race is longer of course, but when you hit 10k and longer, you just settle into your pace during the actual event. The time element comes in for the preparation.  If you’re in 10k shape and want to get into half shape then you need to think about 8-10 weeks of good training which is a lot of miles on your feet.  That’s a lot and I never wanted to truly commit to it outside of the couple times I ran one.

On a separate note, if you do decide you want to run a half and also want to make a trip of it, the London Royal Parks half marathon is awesome.  We were sponsored by work, so we had a small fundraising commitment but there are plenty of options to get in whether through the lottery or charities.  The cool part is that you start in Hyde park and then run past Buckingham palace, green park, Embankment, through Trafalgar Square, and then around a few other places depending on the year before you get back into Hyde park and wrap all around it a few times.  It is an open top bus tour wrapped into a race.

in London???  dang that sounds fantastic!!!

Yeah.  They shut down a bunch of the streets in that area for a couple hours that morning until the sow pokes make it back into the park. The outside the park is about 5-6 miles and then the inside is the rest so that they can get the streets opened back up quicker.  There is also an ultra and a full marathon that same weekend but I haven’t looked into how to qualify for it because that’s just silly.

Sounds similar to sex and fishing.

I'll stick with those.   :)

I used to run with a local group here and actually paid for coaching for a couple of years. It worked, I was running great, getting top in my age groups in 10K and 5K. Was on a 3-4 yr plan with my coach to qualify for Boston. Ran my first full marathon in 2018 (Marine Corps Marathon). Had scheduled 2019 Indy and Chicago and one more on the Gulf Coast. In Jan 2019, I had a snow skiing accident where the other party involved wasn’t aware you paid to be able to use the entire mountain. This young gentleman didn’t know how to turn and hit me from behind on a snowboard going about Mach 5. Anyway, blew my knee up and I haven’t run since. Sometimes miss it, but most often not.

Off topic but I had to comment on your cholesterol medicine. I was taking resuvistatin and began to get weakness in my legs. I thought at first it was from stress. I decided to quit taking it , and it seems like most of the symptoms have gone away.
I hope your legs get better.

Good for you for stopping Mike and I’m glad you’re feeling better!

I too had symptoms 2 weeks in, and called my doctor. His nurse told me to take a “statin holiday” for a week and go back to taking the statin. I did and all the leg aches came back - and then some.

After going through Mayo they determined that when I went back to the statin after the short break is when I did irreparable damage to my legs and it’s been 15 years without any improvement.

I stopped taking the statins, and I work out a lot. Biking doesn’t seem to hurt my legs at all thankfully. My legs feel as strong and agile as 25 years ago. I think I could still lace ‘em up and run a 5 second 40 yard dash. But the one thing I can’t do is stand in one place for more than about 15-30 seconds. If I do, my legs will ache like a migraine for days afterwards.

So part of the reason I sold my bass boat is that I can’t stand on the front deck and cast any more. I have switched to a motorized kayak and am trying to make the most of it.  A good trailer to travel lots of new places, compete in some tournaments. It’s kind of like a “wheelchair on the water” lol.

Just trying to make lemonade out of lemons I guess. Stay statin-free if you can 👍
