Ballhead Jighead options.

Featured Replies

I've been looking at various round jigheads. I have been using cheap Big Bite Baits and Eagle claw jigheads with my Zoom Fat Albert Grubs, but the quality of the hook leaves some to be desired.

Owner ultraheads look good, but I am concerned that the hook size will overpower the 3" grubs. I'm looking more at the 1/4oz which has a 3/0 hook. The 3/16oz has a 2/0, and might be okay, though I'm throwing it on casting gear and I am concerned it won't cast well.

So what is my other options for jigheads?

Owner Ultra round head comes both 2/0 & 3/0 hook 1/8oz to 3/8 oz.

pkg of 5.

Tacklewarehouse only shows the 2/0 going up the 3/16oz. Then 3/0 for 1/4oz and 3/8oz

I have and use the Yum FFS heads.  They aren't cheap but they are good.  They have a 1/4 oz with a #1 hook (which I use for 3" minnows in deeper water).

I also use the VMC mooneyes a bit.  The keeper isn't great at holding, but it also doesn't tear up a bait.  A spot of superglue sorts out the holding portion.  Again, not cheap but they are a good hook.

I am probably going to continue using the cheap ball heads for those applictions at the river where I lose half a dozen per trip.

I'd rather stay around $1 each for the better quality hooks.

I came across these, and they look pretty good - https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/BKK_Silent_Chaser_Round_Jig_Head/descpage-BKKRJH.html?img=2

@ike8120 what do you like about them? They are $3 each, which is pretty stiff if you lose them. I lose jigheads a lot whenever I fish them, even if it ain't down at the river.

$5.99 package of 5 = $1.20 each jig TW,  Owner premium hook!

No argument with that Tom.

My concern is that the 3/0 hook in the 1/4oz size will be too large for the 3" Fat Albert Grubs I want to pair it with. For that matter, I am concerned that the 2/0 hook with the 3/16oz head would be too large.

I agree with you on the hook size.  I believe that a 1/0 would be big enough for your grub. Check Barlows or lure parts on line you might find a good deal.

Susquehanna Tackle has their own shop brand I’ve been using for years.  Check them out.

I buy jig heads on Ebay that are less than a dollar each and I choose the hook size and head weight.

BKK does it right.  If it's the right price for you, you're gonna like them.

Jigs to me should be selected based on the depth I’m fishing at, rate of fall, and structure/ cover I’m fishing in. Add to that; the structure and cover equation. Then the choice of the jig itself; weight, head style, line tie. Then let’s figure out trailer/soft plastic

There’s too many variables to consider here first

@Jigfishn10 I'd love to see your jighead box.

You would be disappointed. In the state I live in we can’t fish with lead jigs or sinkers. And the waters I do fish in are weedy. So there’s not many choices. I can get non lead but they can get expensive and I do have grass jigs that are unleaded.

Before our laws changed banning lead jigs and sinker you would have seen football jigs, arky jigs and grass jigs. In different weights and skirt colors. I was fishing as much out of state as I was fishing in state. Those jigs all had a specific application.

My family grew and my out of state fishing stopped with the exception of saltwater fishing and of course the law. I sold or gave away my jigs, sold my jig mold to a member here and only buy what I think I need for the season.

Bazoo when you buy ball head do you get them with or without the bait keeper molded in?

Mustad Ultra ball head has hook size options 3/16 oz with 1/0 hook in package of 6 on sale a TW.

@JIGMAN I get them with the baitkeeper molded in. I've used a few that had a wire keeper, and I liked them okay. I have only used one that didn't have a keeper a handful of times.

They only offer 2/0 and 3/0 best I can tell.

Look at Mustad Ultrapoint round head jig, offer options for hook size.

I use these for jighead minnows, finesse swimbaits, and 2.5" tubes.  The 1/0 and 2/0 would work for your grub, there is only a .25" difference in gap.  I've found them to be reliably sharp and sturdy enough for a light wire hook.  Good choice.

I get a lot of mine on Ebay, TCI Fishing Lures.

Packs of 50 1/8 oz are around 11$.

You can choose different hook styles and sizes, they are unpainted.

I've ordered them with no issue, pretty fast delivery.

I fish them a lot in rivers and other snaggy places so the pain of losing them is not too painful.

Thanks @herder. I looked at them and they look like a good option. Very reasonably priced.

Some of the pictures show some flashing on the jigheads, can you attest to this? Is there a lot with flashing or are they mostly clean?

Looks like for a quality hook it'll be around $.60 each, which is a great price.

There is a little on some of them, but nothing too bad and doesn't effect them.

Someone on here should be able to pour you some. I have a mold that pours 1/8 and 1/4oz ballheads myself.
