Underspin Advice

Featured Replies

Looking for some recommendations for a decent under spin. I have a few but, the wire for the blade looks flimsy. For you folks that use them what is your opinion good or bad, Thanks

If you want a heavier wire on the blade, the berkley fusion heads are nice. they look good in the water and they come through grass decently well, even modest summer grass. Just have to stay on top of the hook sharpness. They are a normal wire for a 3/0 hook which is to say that a light rod doesn't have the oomph to get a good hookset unless the points are sticky sharp. I fish them on a MH baitcaster so no issue there.

I am an underspin addict and I use VMC's heavyduty underspins. I tried other brands, but none held up to the beating my underspins take. The VMCs hold up to hundreds of bass and bass caught in thick cover. My preferred trailers are Crush City Mayors, Keitechs, and Zakos, which I buy by the hundreds because each can only catch half a dozen or so bass:

I'm an oddball at Bass Resource because I troll a lot. I'm a paddler, so I troll when moving from one casting spot to another. The underspins are excellent for trolling, but I also love to cast them into thick cover with 12" of water. I begin my retrieve a half second before they land so that they don't foul with weeds. I buy the 5/0 hooks, but the 4/0s also work with the Mayors, Keitechs, and Zakos.

The beauty of underspins is that they work the entire column. You can slow roll them on the bottom or, as I already wrote, fish them in the skinniest water.

^^^ Another great option!

I like the centering pin on the Owner and VMC too.

Owner Flashy Swimmer and the Zappu Blading Piledriver work great for me for bass, and also for redfish in the South Louisiana marsh.

I have used the Dirty Jigs Underspins the most and they have worked well on smaller Keitech Swimbaits

I have used the BKK Titan Diver for WCZ Micro Citizens, they match perfectly with the bait

I will have to try the VCM Underspins @Swamp Girl uses.....as once the grass/reeds grow in here they are thick and those VCM's might be very good for that situation

For a pre-rigged underspin lure the RAID HeadSwimmer Libero has been very good for me, specifically in the spring (which here is May)

I cast those tough suckers into the thickest cover with no fear because they're built to take a beating and close to weedless.

Flashy swimmer for anything ~3.25"+

For bfs these days I'm liking the great lakes finesse sneaky but the price isn't great so gotta get them during sales.

Big fan of the Owner underspins. Always a good option.

I scooped a couple of the Cool Baits "The Down Under" underspin, and like those a lot as well.

These are expensive for what you get. I lose more of these than spinnerbaits.

Thanks for everyones input, Looks like the Owner flashy underspins seem to be the best bang for the buck for me.

How do you lose them, Allen? I don't think I ever lose one.

FWIW, I like spinnerbaits too, but I much prefer underspins for casting into skinny water and casting under bushes. They land much more lightly, which matters when the water's shallow and bass are more likely to be spooked.

I fish the same ones as @Swamp Girl they really single up incredibly well. I need to get some bigger ones. I use the 3/0 currently. So I use smaller soft plastics. But love the mayors.

I like the owner flashy swimmer for Keitechs. Last year I used the Great Lakes finesse under spin for 3” mayors. It’s more of a “finessey” presentation with a light wire hook.

That's pretty slick. Is the hook a lighter gauge or heavier. Prefer a little lighter as thinking finesse for smallies.

Ain't that the truth.

A jig head and a blade for no less than $5 is bonkers.

For some reason spending $20 on a hard bait is much easier to swallow. )

Owner Flashy Swimmer has caught me MANY good size bass. The 5/0 with a 4.8" Keitech Fat Impact in electric shad is my go to, but I have caught fish on many different trailers on the 1/0, 3/0, 5/0, 6/0 and even the 8/0 with appropriate soft plastics attached. Willow and Colorado blades, silver and gold.

The Dirty Jigs (Tactical?) underspin is also in my rotation.

Retrieve just fast enough to keep the tail wagging.

This is what I use for big Lake Erie/St Clair Smallies.

Among the reasons I like these so much (apart from the quality) is because of the large selection of hook sizes and weights.

Hook size: #1, #2, 1/0, 2/0, 3/0

Weights: 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8

FWIW, I change out the screw pin to an Owner CPS. It has tighter twists and holds better IMO.

Also, the guys at Great Lakes Finesse know a thing or two about Smallies and have a fantastic underspin called the Sneaky Underspin.

Howdy Goggly,

Big difference in size from the 3" to the 4.5". With a 3" Easy Shiner I would go light, smaller wire hook maybe size one to 1/0 and a head weight of no more then 1/8 oz. 4.5" depends on the depth you want to target. Hook size 2/0 - 3/0 and weight 1/8 oz to 1/4 oz. 3/8 oz maybe if your wanting to go deeper then 20'. All of this will also depend on your set up. If your using a bait caster and 15- 20lb line vs spinning tackle with threadline braid and leader, light mono or fluorocarbon main line it will greatly affect how it fishes.

Hope that helps,

Fishingmickey

I make my own underspins with deconstructed beetle spins, lol. Take a 1/4 oz beetle spin and remove the blade and split ring, add to a #7 barrel swivel. Connect this to an oval split ring, then attatch that to the jig head and super glue it. This thing puts off a lot of vibration

From Keitech's website:

2" - #4
3" - #2 or #1
3.5" - #1 or #1/0
4" - #2/0
4.5" - #3/0
5" - #4/0 or #5/0
8" - #8/0 or #10/0
