Question for the grandparents...

Although my body reminds me I'm "of age" most mornings, it's crazy to now be a grandpa (Papa) myself. I've heard being a grandparent has all the perks of being a parent without the stress and worries that go along with raising children of your own, and if that's the case I may be entering one of the best chapters of my life. Anyone care to share any nuggets of advice or traditions they've done with their grandkid(s)?

Can't wait to take this sweet girl out fishing. 🙂😊

My first is about to turn 3 (I’m 52). I have another due in Oct. it is a completely different kind of relationship and I didn’t realize that until I became a grandparent myself (I’m Popsth - bc my granddaughter had/has a small lisp). For her third birthday, she wants a pink “fish po” like popsth. So, I’m going to make her one.

I was hunting at the time my grandson was born. I started taking him dove hunting when he was 3 and shooting at 5. I bought him a bb gun with no sights so he would learn instinct shooting. He went through bbs by the 1,000 and later 22s by the thousand. He grew up to be a sniper.

Spend every minute you can with them while they’re little. They grow up in a hurry. They are a great blessing. I have 5–three girls and two boys. Ages 17 to 24. Not all of them fish but I buy them all a fishing lure for their Christmas stocking every year.

I'm not a grandparent so I can't help there, but congratulations.

I'll offer some information from the opposite end of the spectrum, as a grand child.

My Grandfather on my Mother's side died of cancer in 2012 but I spent many hours afield and on the water with him before he passed. He didn't bass fish, but he walleye fished and hunted like an addict. I learned so much in 10 years of doing that each season with him that has stayed with me to this day. He also gave me a couple of items before he died: a Beckman muskie net, and a portable turkey blind. Each time I use one of those, I am reminded of him. Miss that guy every day.

He also told me a couple things that I'll never forget: "If you don't have your health, you don't have much."

"Quality of life is measured by the amount of time you have to do what you enjoy doing."

Congrats! My grandpa took me fishing for sucker many times as a kid, and it was his lessons that got me bass fishing years later as an adult.

Some of the best days in my life, were spent with my grand kids, who are fully grown.

Proud to say, my granddaughter got her Masters degree yeras ago.

What ever you do make them as happy as you can. The memories will be very rewarding.
