Any suggestions for a crankbait rod? Looking to keep it under $400. Deepest diving baits will be 15’. Something that’s versatile would be a bonus as far as throwing reaction baits. No fiberglass, never been a fan.

I like the Dobyns crankbait rods, Fury, Kaden, Champ XP whatever length/power works for the baits you want to throw.

705CB is probably the most "do everything" if I had to pick one, but they have a ton of options.

St. Croix Legend Tournament 7'2" MH Mod. This will throw most baits. It struggles with 3/8oz lures but it can definitely bring in the fish.

IMX Pro 903 or 906 ...

Edge Delta MBR 714-1 CB

I recently bought a KVD elite crankbait rod and it’s pretty decent.

ALX makes 2 graphite crankbait rods in the Zolo line up. The "crank" and the "grind" both rods have a really nice parabolic bend but the grind at 7'10 would probably be better if you're looking to throw deep divers, the crank could definitely serve as a jerkbait rod. Okuma makes the guide select crankbait series, I have a 7"10 M and like it for crankbaits, it is a fairly fast action for a crankbait rod but it keeps the fish pinned. As others said the Dobyns graphite cranking rods are fantastic, I really like the champ xp CB 764 and the CB 805 , my buddy has a lews XD crankbait rod that has a nice blank, but I don’t care for the Wynn grip. Lots of great choices out there.

Dobyns Fury 705CB has probably the best action/feel of any crankbait rod I’ve ever owned.

The 13 composite cranking rods have a soft action, are very light and available at different price points. Most of the time, I think investing more in the rod is the way to go. Cranking rods are the exception, you just need a rod with the right action, good ergonomics and lightweight, which you can get for less than half of your max cost. Investing the saved money into a new reel or on a rod meant for a technique that really needs a high degree of sensitivity, like a shaky head, strolling or jig rod.

I will have to agree. It knocked the Daiwa Elite rod out of the starting lineup.

I really enjoy my Cashion Icon cranking rods. The 7’ MH will handle most anything to 12ft or so

Unfortunately I’ve had to find what I like through trial and error. I’ve wasted a lot of time and money through the process. Some may disagree but there’s no reason to spend $400 on a crankbait rod unless you just want to

I've got 2 crank rods

Victory 7'2" MH/M - for standard/larger cranks

Mojo Bass Glass 7'2" M/M - for smaller/finesse cranks

Both work well with a little overlap in the medium sizes.

Oh definitely - Got the Victory from ALF on sale, the Glass from St Croix factory store on close-out...less than $300 total for the pair.

Save an additional $100 and consider the P5 Javelin.

If you're willing to reconsider glass, there's a lot of refined options around that price point.

If you’re ok going used, the Daiwa BLX RBs were all stars. They were super light, crisp, and responsive but had chefs kiss the perfect tapers for what you’re looking for. Understated styling but fantastic components, especially the cork. I’m still bummed I sold the 7’4” I had.

The OG Destroyer Javelin was also a unicorn but hard to locate now.

For realistic value the Tatula cork line, Anything Dobyns, or a Victory are more than you need for crankbaits. The action is truly all that matters and secondary sensitivity isn’t necessarily important.

I am fishing cranks with a Scheels Outfitters Pro Classic, 6'-6" medium heavy/fast spinning rod (8-15 lb, 3/16-5/8oz, weighs 4.10 ounces) It was $79. Paired with a Shimano Miravel MIR 2500HG reel ($129).

Lots of options out there. See what feels best in your hands.

Lots of good input here, but I haven't seen any comments on the Gary Loomis Edge Rods, which I am currently researching and considering a purchase of the Black Widow/ First Strike series. I am aware of the 5 month average backorder, but that's ok with me. I would like to hear any personal experiences with the line. Thankyou.

@Tackleholic I have two Black Widows. One Spinning (DSR 711-1) which I use for a number of finesse applications (including Small jerkbaits) from and One Casting (MBR 733-1) which plays heavier than the 4-12 lb / 1/8-3/8 specs and I use for 110 size jerks, lipless and some cranks. I happen to like both very much and will be getting another Edge as the need arises. Like most manufacturers, the stated specs don't do a great job of representing the true action or best purpose. I found it helpful to call the folks there and spend some time figuring out the best rod for your goal. FWIW, I never struggled with all the customer service complaints that people used to mention. If you can find a 7'10" St Croix Victory HModerate cranking rod you will be in love. It is imho THE 5XD rod. You can absolutely BOMB casts and the soft tip+heavy backbone is really insane for pinning fish.

I've got a bunch of Legend Xtremes, NRX, Daiwa BLX rods and that Victory cracker is still in my top 3 for most used rods, it is that awesome.

I would strongly advise you to look into the wait times and issues with the company. I’ve heard nothing bad about the rods but nothing good about their business model.

St.Croix Mojo Bass 7.0 MH/Mod. Best over the counter crankin' stick I've ever owned.

With the couple of hundred you'll save, you can get a Tatula with 5.4:1 gears and have a great combo for under $400.
