Nice fish. Try putting the hook up through the gill plate. That's what I do whn I use a scale with that type of hook.

The only time I "match the hatch" is when trout fishing. I don't think it's important for bass.

Has anyone ever done any trout fishing in this creek? I was up there earlier today but didn't have my UL rod with me. It looked like it might hold some nice fish. I am just trying to see if it is worth stopping by when I'm in that area again.

Shakey head jig heads are usually lightweight so a MH is a little bit of an over kill for them. You could get away with it, but a M/F or M/XF would be better for most situations. I will fish them on a MH in thick weeds or brush though.

The AC models are the older ones without the IPC technology. The AVC models have IPC but that is the only difference.

I believe the closest Smallmouths to you are in the Uwharrie River. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uwharrie_River I've fished it a couple times and have had decent results. The prime NC Smallmouth waters are up in the mountains. Lake James and the New River are two great ones.
