Really good rod for under $50???
Any way you look at it, you won't get a very lightweight rod for $50. Lightning Rods are decent quality for the money, but compared to other rods they are heavy.

NC / SC Lakes
Tuckertown Reservoir and High Rock are good lakes that are relatively close to you. Falls Lake up near Raleigh is also a good one. If you feel like fishing for some river Smallmouths, the Uwharrie River around El Dorado, NC (sneeze and you'll miss it) is a good option. After it warms up in the spring you can wade the river if the water isn't too high.

Shimano takes a large step backwards IMHO
Just some sour grapes from BPS. Like Cart7t said on the other thread, just because they won't participate in BPS's program, doesn't mean they don't participate in other events that help out the community.

What got you hooked?
Catching my first Flounder at Holden Beach, NC when I was about 7 years old. That was the first decent sized fish that I had caught all by myself, and it really got me hooked. I had always liked fishing, but that Flounder really got me interested for some reason. When we went home I wanted to fish more, but we live a few hours from the beach so I started fishing for Bass in freshwater instead.

TackleTour.com what do you think? Do you agree with me?
Do you remember the swimbait rod wars? I think it would be cool if they did something like a value-minded honorable mention... They could do a value-minded honorable mention for everything from reel reviews and tests, to line reviews and tests. They did give this Okuma a "Best Value Award": http://www.tackletour.com/reviewokuma711mhsb.html
