Biggest Bass of 2023 ~ What Bait ?
Ok, it's not super cold here like it was last week, but I'm still sporting a couple of layers. My world will remain frozen solid for several more weeks. However, many members are still fishing and may have already landed a best fish. But another one could be slurping up that very next cast. Either way, thought I'd throw this one out there. Here's your chance to call your shot. What exact bait or lure do you expect to catch your biggest bass of the year on ? And no coming back and editing your choice after the fact. #fairplay For me, picking a jerkbait would just be plain low hanging fruit. I'm not going there. Vibrating Jig has been a solid contender past few seasons and I kind of leaning that way now. So that's going to be my pick. But just to add a little spice to it, I'm going to with the 3/8 Green Pumpkin Z-Man Chatterbait Mini Max with a matching Goby Swimbait Trailer. Interestingly enough, I've never even casted one of these baits but after bait monkeying a few last week, and rigging up that trailer, I'm feeling pretty confident. Time will tell. If it works out, you'll see that bait at least once in a video. If not, then. . . . . So what's it going be ? A-Jay

Drop Shot : Short Shank vs. Longer Straight Shank Hooks ?
Over the last several years, much of my drop shot fishing, especially mid-late season, has migrated to using 'bigger baits'; relative term. Where in previous deals I was using, the standard skinny 4 & 6 inch Sculpins, Robo worms & Dream Shots - and they catch bass for sure, I started drop shotting a baby rage craw, and then a full-size craw and then 4 & 5 inch Fluke and started getting bites from more bigger fish. But along with that, I was losing a few fish, because the hooks & manner I was using them was apparently inefficient. First off, in some instances, my hook selection was too small. Secondly, while I like nose hooking, seems it's not the best way when I'm targeting bigger smallies - which is ALL The TIME pretty much. Nose hooking also picks up eel grass when it's there and the little hooks have a tendency to skin hook a lot leading them to come unpinned too much for my liking. I do Tex-pose my drop shot plastic when needed but all things being equal, I prefer not to if I can. ***Note *** regarding the Hooks Pictured - I use SEVERAL DIFFERENT sizes - I offered these to allow for the name, brand, type, and model number identification purposes. So we've ventured into using a little bigger, longer shanked hook. So if you look at the Picture provided, the bottom row - those are all GREAT DROP SHOT OPTIONS and ones I still use a ton; mostly for nose hooking. That whole top row of hooks are what I go to for bigger baits and when I want to 'top hook' a bait; meaning inserting the hook like you would put say a swimbait on a jighead. Where the hook goes in the front/nose of the bait, is threaded into & down the body of the bait BUT comes out the top. Still a drop shot, but when a fluke or a caffeine shad is rigged like this, the hook up to land ratio goes way up. Brownies are generally impaled in the top or the roof of the mouth and they generally Do NOT come off. I definitely use a little 'beefier gear', like M instead of ML and 8-10 lb fluorocarbon leader instead of 4-6 lb. The bigger Hook size demands a bit more pressure to sink it successfully, but after that, it's just a matter to playing that brown tank into the net. This works GREAT for Green bass too. A-Jay

Best Sun Protective Clothing
I wear Columbia PFG, HUK and Simms long sleeve shirts and long pants. Buffs, hats & gloves as well. I tried the hooded shirts, didn't care for them. Hood was always blowing in my face. Light cotton socks and HUK shoes too believe it or not. These companies newest sun protection clothing is light, comfortable and fairly durable. Meaning it lasts wash after wash. Might not be the least expensive stuff, but IMO you get what you pay for. As I mentioned in another thread I hate sunscreen, especially on my face, so the clothing works well for me. Cooler than bare skin in every instance. Unless otherwise indicated these are all loose fitting garments (especially the tops) and IME they run a bit on the larger size. I buy Mediums and there's still plenty of room. A-Jay

Face scarf/shield
I do face cover all year now. (but everything else is covered up as well). For a few decades I didn't ever even wear sun screen, which I HATE slathering on my face even today. So I'm playing catch up mostly. But I wear one in the cold and in the sun/heat, and just about everywhere in between. Good for bugs protection too; day or night. Still working through the foggy glasses thing tough. A-Jay

Working to Stay Lean ~
Fun fact. In the leg press work out alone (posted above,) and just counting the lifts (Reps & Sets) and not accounting for the loading & unloading of the weights on & off the equipment. I move 21,310 lbs. That's 10.6 tons folks. In 35 minutes. I'll sleep good tonight. ? A-jay

The braided line dilemma
My casting gear is mostly all FC line. Exceptions are super heavy cover rigs (frogs, flipping plastics) where my drag doesn't come into play. Spinning is 100 % light braid. 8, 10, 15 & at least one with 20 lb. I fish with a relatively light drag, which I set by 'feel' so I can not say what the exact lbs of drag pressure actually is. But I'm 'testing it' all the time. Meaning I pull out a little line before, after and even during a fish fight. More to make sure the drag is not hanging up than if the braid is digging it. (If you've watched any of my video I'm almost certain you've seen me do it at least once) This is habit at this point and comes from back in the day when 'drag systems' were not what they are now. I can't remember when I lost a fish because my line dug in or my drag fail to work on spinning gear with braid mainline. But I'll still keep checking it 50 times a day, because that's what I do. Bottom line, no braid dilemma for me. btw - I love a good singing drag . . . . https://youtu.be/3OXnPQs0bqQ?t=79 A-Jay

The Frozen Tundra of Upstate NY...
I know at this point it shouldn't, but it always amazes me that stuff will Break or simply just Fail as a result of super cold air temps. And it seems nothing is exempt or impervious to it. I'm certainly not. Never experienced it until I moved here. ? A-Jay

The Frozen Tundra of Upstate NY...
Seems Punxsutawney Phil is getting his way. Sub-zero air temps and mind numbing winds chill over this way as well. Cold paw is running ramped with our dogs. They are going down like they've been hit by a sniper. No problem getting them back in the house though . . . . . ? A-Jay
