  1. Muzzleloaders definitely don't fly as far as a rifle does, but in my opinion are definitely more accurate. The downside for some hunters using a muzzleloader is that you get one good shot, if you are like my neighbor who sprays and prays when he shoots for deer then it isn't for you. If you like the idea of getting one good clean shot and you are relying on your ability to shoot, then a muzzleloader will fall between the shotgun and rifle range. Just my 2 cents. I was intimidated by them at first too, and once you get the initial walk through on how to use one of the new modern ones, it is a piece of cake.
  2. I am gonna assume that you can hunt with a rifle in your area? Today was my last day for deer as well, but in my area we are not allowed to use a rifle. I would be concerned with house closer than 500 yds. You do know how far a 30-06 can travel right? If you are insisting on using a rifle you probably should shoot a practice round from your blind into something so you can predict trajectory. Have you considered using a muzzleloader? I hunt strictly with my muzzleloader for deer, very accurate and I am not afraid to reach out 200 yds with it. Just something to consider.
  3. I have a Moss 500 and a Rem 870. For hunting I would use the 870 any day of the week over the 500. That 500 will kick the living crap out of you after more than a couple shots. I wanted a Turkey barrel for my 870 and my wife went to get it for me. They didn't have one in stock so they sold her a 500 cause it came with a choked barrel. I will be passing that one onto my stepson who thinks he is the toughest mofo this side of the moon. With that being said, I still use my muzzleloader for all my deer hunting.
  4. Doug.....thank you for sharing. In this world we are quick to get caught up in all that is going on, rather than enjoying what we have been given. Just hearing your story brings back my memories from 13 years ago when my wife was diagnosed with Melanoma. I have learned to enjoy the moment, we never know when or if it will come back. Keep your head up and enjoy her. Nobody can ever take your memories. God Bless.
  5. We got the snow the weekend before, about 10 inches of it. Then this past weekend we got the rain and ice. Once the ice ended we lost power and it has been off since Saturday. Now the temps are plummeting to top it off. Looks like 8°F here right now and the wind and snow are supposed to move in around 5am. Estimated restoration time of Sunday for our power. All in all, we are safe....the generator is keeping is warm.....and we are spending some quality family time together. God is good.
  6. I completely understand where you are coming from. I lost a great friend on Thanksgiving 2012. There isn't a week that goes by where I don't miss him. He was a great father figure and a kind man. One heck of a role model for myself and many others. I had a couple of texts on my phone from him when he passed and I refuse to upgrade my phone for fear of losing them. I sent him a goodbye text after I confirmed his passing and that is saved as well. Several months after he passed I ran into his son at a gun show. He made my day when he revealed he actually saved my message to his father because it hit the nail on the head. It is good to grieve, that just shows how much they meant to you.
  7. Glad to hear that all looked well.
  8. We had three on the ground already and got another 6 today. This will be the first Christmas since 2002 that we have had enough to cover the grass. Unless we hit a major warm up we could have ice on the lakes thick enough to fish by Christmas as well!
  9. Prayers for you and your family.
  10. They are a pain to get here in Michigan and once you get it, you better be prepared for a headache. Heaven forbid you pass and your spouse or next of kin comes into possession. They are breaking the law and can be arrested immediately. One of the local gun shops I visit ordered one for a guy and he decided that he wanted to make it a "layaway" deal with the remaining balance. The owner said no and immediately called to cancel the paperwork and sent it back to the manufacturer. He wanted nothing to do with holding it or being in possession of it. I haven't seen much shake this guy, but he didn't like this at all.
  11. Congratulations Mike. What a great example you have set for your kids, grandkids and great grand kids. My best to you and your wife.
  12. I hunted for 4-5 years and then got out of it. Never shot any deer this few years and saw very little. Last year my son asked me to take him hunting so I got back into it. Managed get my first buck and a nice big doe. Was glad to get a little meat in the freezer and spend some time with my son. This year I am being more selective with my deer and hope to get a nice big buck. Kritter is right, slow down and enjoy it. I have learned to enjoy my 3-4 hours in the blind. Gives me plenty of time to clear my head. Just like fishing isn't called catching, hunting isn't called killing. If it were everyone would be doing it. Best of luck to you.
  13. Awesome Buck. Congrats.
  14. We usually get a local farm bird and the wife starts the cooking process early in the morning. No brine, no injection, only some butter and seasoning on the outside and stuffed to the brim with her family recipe. I married an excellent cook and my waistline showed it for a good number of years. The last four years we have spent Thanksgiving with my Aunt and her family. She passed away shortly after our first one together so now we have made it tradition to still spend the day with my Uncle and the kids.

    Congrats man!
  16. That LCP is an ok gun. The two I have shot both had extremely long trigger pulls and at 6'2" and 240 lbs there just isn't much handle there to hold onto. My father-in-law is your size and he loves that gun.
  17. That is a nice buck. I finally got back into hunting last year after an almost 20 years hiatus. Got a small buck and a large doe. This year I am gonna wait for that one buck if I ever see it. My daughter (7 years old) asked yesterday when we gun season starts so she can go with me.
  18. No question about it that the SEC has been pretty dominant the last few years, but there is no way a 2 loss LSU team is better than several of the teams behind them. Same goes for South Carolina. These two teams have losses to currently unranked opponents.
  19. I am not a fan of the boiled peanuts. My wife introduced me to them a few years ago and it is one of the few things I will not eat. I don't get it either. She will not eat soggy bread, biscuits dipped in gravy, hot beef sandwiches, pancakes with syrup on them, but she will eat some nasty soggy friggin peanuts. Just crazy.
  20. Woodchucks are my favorite critter to shoot. For years I used a 22LR, but when we moved into our new place the distance was too great to shoot those little buggers. So now I use my M4. They are like a timex, they take a licken and keep on ticken. With an M4 and a head shot, they usually don't have time to run. I got a neighbor who eats them as well. He claims that they taste like veal. It makes sense since they eat grass like a cow, but I will pass myself.
  21. If she is completely new to handguns and just looking for a little defense weapon check out the Ruger LCR. Comes in several chambers, but I would recommend the 38 special. It is a nice firing gun, smooth trigger and a middle weight so the recoil isn't terrible. You can also get it in .22 if you desire. I would also recommend she take a class, either a personal protection class or a CPL class. My wife took one with me and she was amazed at the amount of information she learned without needing a gun. She said it was the best investment she has ever made in keeping her and the kids safe. She still carries, but she said the other information was very helpful.
  22. Boiled peanuts are the single most odd thing I have ever watched my wife eat. She can eat them like no mans business, but she can not stand soggy bread or biscuits. Makes no sense to ms that she can eat soggy peanuts, but not sausage gravy on her biscuits. Poor woman is confused.
  23. Very cool. My wife has a cousin who's son is autistic and his dad got the puzzle piece on his lower leg. it looks very good there.

If nothing else, this will be a great test for S&W to show that not only can they make a great product but also provide great customer service. If they fail on the service portion to fix this issue they will feel it for years. Consumers want no headache dealing with a problem they didn't create.
  25. Don't forget to keep that tube of Chapstick clearly marked and discard of immediately in the morning. And don't skimp on the premium toilet paper.
