First time poster in smallieville!!!!!!RW????
My best smallie came from Wyoming, on a black Panther Martin In-Line Black Spinner w/gold blade in winter. 4lbs. I have caught some smallies on accident at Belton with tubes rigged TX style, smoked w/ red flake. 3/16ths bullet. Nothing of size. I have caught numerous smallies in the river behind Whitney. I normally walk and float the Brazos in the summer. Ultra lites and 1/8 oz buzzbaits all day will catch 40 fish days, and thats the small number. Top water on Gin clear waters is a beautiful sight to see a bass coming from 20 yards to hit it. We have a bass that we think crossed. WE call them mean mouths, they are on the small side, but on ultra lites and 4lb test, they are pure fighting machines, not too mention, theres current to fight also. Matt

Pattern Criteria
That all depends on the pattern discovered. One on some days, and multiple pieces of info to unlock the puzzle on others. Matt

Gar, bad for bass?
George, I have witnessed numerous needlenose gar just lying under the surface under a branch overhanging the waters edge lifeless waiting to ambush the small baitfish working the area. With a nose like that, you need to sneak up on a meal. The lord sure didn't bless them with a bucket mouth like he did a bass. LOL Matt

San Diego River....does it have fish?
The places where I fished where at Santee. The RCP pits, its were parts of the river have been dredged by the gravel compainies. They have or had very good crappie fishing at night, and some un-pressured bass fishing, All the pits are surrounded by bullrushes or what some call reeds. A float tube is a must to be effective on bass, thus the reason it wasn't pressured as much when I was stationed out there. The area that produced good bass was just below the Las Colinas Womens prison in Santee. I caught 6 crappie in one summer that all went over 3 lbs. These pits are deep and full of crappie and bass. Minnows in Cali were very expensive, crappie minnows was like 6.00 a dozen in the 90's. Large bass shiners were 12.99 a dozen. Word on the street was to go to pet shops and buy feeder goldfish, much cheaper on the wallet. Matt

Boston College and Virginia Tech Tonite!!!!
Thursday nights are quickly becoming my favorite football night. There has been some very good, exciting, meaningful games being played on Thursdays. I'm not sure the BC QB is the Heisman just yet. Plenty of football to determine that one still. He's not off the list, thats for sure. I would also like to say, this is not the same VT that I saw play ECU and LSU. Matt

Rumor of SAL #442 Huge one!!!!!
Well no picture has surfaced yet, and no one at Anglers Lodge has chimed in. No word on the TP&W web site as of yet. I do believe that there are some big ones in Amistad, she doesn't come close to the pressure that Fork gets. We'll see, Matt

Rumor of SAL #442 Huge one!!!!!
As it does every year. The new Sal program starts Oct. 1, 2007 and ends April 30, 2008. Just long enough to get those ladies to spawn in captivity to hopefully produce some future sharelunkers. Matt

Rumor of SAL #442 Huge one!!!!!
Theres a rumor floating around today. The first SAL of the year has been caught. If this rumor holds true, history is in the making. History in the fact of, there has never been another lake in Texas to produce a fish that weighs more than 16.99 pounds except from Lake Fork. Today, reports are coming from Fork about Lake Amistad. A 17.80 Which would be new lake record, a record that was set as of Dec 2005 at 15.68. If this rumor holds up to be true. It would be the 8th ShareALunker donated from Amistad since she opened up in 1968. This would be one of the most encouraging signs we've seen in years. Thank you Mother Nature for giving her some needed rains that filled her banks to 90% capacity. Ya'll Hookem, I hope to tell ya'll soon that this one is for real. Matt

Mark Davis......BASS or FLW
Two years ago, Mark Davis and Jay Yelas put the bad mouth on BASS for the course they steered with the Elite series and sponsor decisions. As for the bad mouth, in simple, they were not happy with recent management. Well if you didn't notice this year. Mark persued the BASS southern series. He finished 4th, which by rights has earned him a shot at getting back onboard with BASS and the Elites, and classic bid. Mark Davis was and is a versitile pro who cut his teeth with BASS. If I have my info correct, I believe first installments on next years entry fee's are due next Monday. Mark is sponsored by Skeeter/Yamaha, he's a Classic Champ and I think 3 time AOY also. With the recent sponsor boat changes, allowing an angler to fish out of his or her own sponsored boats gonna be enough to bring him back. Seems to me, that issue and the Beer sponsorship was the two thorns that stuck out. Time to get rid of the dead wood on tour taking up space who haven't shown promise. I would welcome back Mark Davis, It just makes the Elites tougher and tougher to dominate. Monday is the deadline for first installments on 2008 entry fees for the Elites. Should he stay or go? I'm hoping he's coming home to BASS. Another Classy pro and class act. Matt

Trolling motor shuts down????
Check the old harness for corosion and such. I don't know the condition of your wiring harness. I am assuming that you have bass boat where wires are run that you can't see. A loose wingnut on battery can cause heat build up also. Graphs operate on mV now days, so the chance of the sonar unit causing problem is very slim. Some times its the age of the unit and magnet, the magnet is the motor, the heart of the trolling motor. More heat means more current draw. More heat is caused by less resistance, normally with boats and electronics, with corrosion, you have less voltage, with normally won't allow you to operate things like a graph. With more current and heat, thats normally a sign of the motor going bad or loose connection. Have you opened the top of the trolling motor to observe the circuit board inside. TM's are different, some have hand control for speed and some are foot controlled. Over heating will show up, you should be able to smell if the PCB is going bad. Normally, the rheostat won't be the cause, but will show some sign of burning. Matt

Boston College and Virginia Tech Tonite!!!!
So, who has who to night? #2 Boston College is travelling to #8 Virginia Tech tonight on ESPN @ 1830 hrs, thats 6:30pm for the civilians. Has VT's early season ranking and their barely hanging on this season been to generous? Will the powers above allow BC to play for a National title if they hang on. BC has fair late schedule, FSU, Maryland, Clemson and Miami, and I don't know how those games will help them in the BCS computers. Will it be enough if they go undefeated? I'll take BC on the road. I didn't think after watching them play 2 early games, ECU and LSU, that they deserved the early ranking. Matt

whats your best 5 bass limit in tourney
There are a lot of lakes in Texas that aren't as big as T bend and Sam Rayburn that recieve the same pressures and produce those results. We are blessed to have an active Fish and Game department. The results we post and brag about are tributes to the active parts that anglers take in catch and release, the ongoing studies from groups like Lane and her husband have done on livewell additives that promote a fishes surviving, the Share A Lunker (SAL) program that studies DNA for gene research to promote bigger bass growth rates, and to the men and women of the Game Wardens agency that actively enforce our restrictions. My hats off to all of us who have helped promote the growth of the sport, for the hobby, and for the love of just wetting a hook, Thanks. I do love our states bass fishing. Matt

Talkin' about Jigs/Jiggin 101
Once you get the knack of jigs, and catch some, you will see what all the fuss is about. There are certain times of the year that jigs just outproduce other conventional baits. Good luck. I would give the guys your location, type of stucture and cover you are fishing and I bet they could suggest the proper jig to toss. Matt

Lunker Bass
I love bass that look like they just came from some deep grass. That is one pretty dark bass, she's a beauty!!!!!!! Hookem Matt

First time poster in smallieville!!!!!!RW????
I can't say about Merideth, she is a lake up in the Texas panhandle, but Whitney has had the golden algae blooms the past few years. I knew what effect it had on other species, but can't tell you how the Algae bloom effected smallies on Lake Whitney. Anything in the Brazos river chain was effected by the Golden Algae Blooms. May have something to do with the peak. I don't here much about small mouth fishing in Texas. As you can see, Ron Gardner was the man on Whitney, and I'm not sure about Merideth. I just recently heard of some good small mouth catches on OH Ivey, been very good for LM's, but small mouth have been the ticket to concentrate on during the tournaments held in recent months. Actually, seems to me, guys who have some knowledge on smallie's are the ones coming in with a 5 bass limit and are the ones in the money. Matt

The Fishing Offseason
What offseason? Nobody told us in Texas we had to take the season off!!!! We carry shotguns and a rod to do a little duck hunting in the mornings and catch a bass or two during the afternoons. During my military career, I got some first hand experience from being stationed in Illinois and Minnesota. I learned that you bet on when cars will fall through the ice. That was a new one on me. Offseason is for amatuers!!!! Sorry to my friends in cold places! Matt
