Guide/Charter Help: Florida Deep Sea Fishing
Wasn't sure where to post this, but here goes... Taking the wife and kids to Fort Walton Beach, FL in August, and we're going with several other families. Myself and the other dads wanted to do a deep-sea fishing or offshore sport fishing trip, but need help with guides/charter services in the FWB / Destin area. I've gone to several web sites that list dozens of different charter services, but I don't know what to be on the lookout for, or which one's are better than the others. Any tips or recommendations would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Favorite Beer...
My everyday beer is the King... but for a change I like Bass Pale Ale (including a Black and Tan) and Blue Moon, and if I'm really wanting to splurge I'll go for a Chimay or Orval, both excellent Belgian Trappist Ales.

Tablerock
Fished the last four and a half days (5/14 to 5/18). Between my brother in law and I we caught about 40 fish, with me netting 7 keepers (14 lbs 7 ozs) and him 6 keepers (just under 12 lbs.). The ticket for us all week was a 5" single tail Yamamoto grub in green pumpkin, fished on 3/16 or 1/4 oz jigs. Fish it very slowly whether on the bottom or suspended 10' to 15' down. We did get a few on the double tail version, as well as a green pumpkin Fish Doctor fished on a split shot rig... but the single tail grub was in the water 90% of the time. We fished Indian Point, Beardsley and as far down as Clavenger, but the area we had the most success in was between the dam and State Park marina, but opposite side (west) of the lake. Netted some fish on main lake points with our boat in 25' to 30' of water. Did better, though, once we moved off the points to the corners and then down the banks of the coves. We positioned the boat a little closer to the bank and fished as close to the flooded trees and brush as possible. Majority of fish were smallies, with a fair amount of spots. Very few largemouth, also a few goggle eye. Most of the fish were spawned out, just still hanging in the trees and brush recovering and waiting for an easy meal. Unless you are very good (we are not!) plan to lose lots of jigs by getting hung up in the brush. But the trade off is a 2+ lb smallie hammering your jig and heading to the bottom! Good luck, Tom

Favorite oil base scent
FWIW, in the past I primarily only used Megastrike, but just recently I rec'd some JJ's Magic in the garlic oil. Gonna try it out this week at Table Rock. If it performs half as good as the odor is potent... the fish are in trouble

automatic inflatable vests
I'm not much of a swimmer, so I bought the Mustang MD3031 Type V PFD a few years ago. It's an auto inflatable model. Has 35lbs of buoyancy and an inflatable collar that is supposed to turn a person from face down in the water onto their back. I wear it at all times while on the water, it's very light. Only complaint I had when worn the first few times was the edge of the collar rubbed the back of my neck at bit, was sort of aggravating. Doesn't do it any more, and I like it. Likewise, I am extremely thankful I haven't had to "test drive" it. Tom

We stay at a place just across from Indian Point, right at the mouth of Little North Indian. So we fish up that way, also up North Indian and south toward Long Creek. I've read elsewhere that grubs are the ticket right now... hopefully next week, too!

Wow...! Hey tkite16, how did you do while you were down there? I'm heading down next week for 5 days, assume the water will be just as high, although I guess the spawn will probably be in full swing for most fish. Thanks, Tom

Rick Ankiel
LMAO... Dunc sure has his struggles... If he's hitting you can (sort of) overlook his deficiencies in the field, but no hit AND no glove makes for a very bad combo. If it continues I have to believe we will see others (i.e. Barton, Ludwick) get more turns in left.

Just wondering if anyone saw the two throws Ankiel made in tonight's game versus the Rockies? HOLY COW!!!

Finding Structure?
Catt, just curious, where would one find a topographic map, and specifically for the reservoirs here in Missouri? Thanks!

TableRock Lake
I only go once a year for a week, usually late April to mid May - this year it's mid May - so my experience is limited. Most of the fish we catch are in 15' or less of water. Our best lures have been, in no particular order: 1. finesse worms, french fries, etc. fished either on shakey heads or wacky; 2. single tail grubs fished on 1/4 to 1/2 ounce jig head; 3. jig n' pig. We get a place just slightly Southwest of Indian Point, and fish south toward Spring Branch and Cow Creek. We go north of Indian Point into Little North and North Indian Creeks, as well as Jacques Creek. Also over/down to Coombs Ferry public use area, and then south down toward Long Creek Arm. TRL can be very intimidating at first, I know it was for me. I never used a guide, the guys I fish with have been going for over 15 years and helped me tremendously (BTW, they did get a guide the first couple times they went, so it's a good idea!) Good luck! Kansas Jayhawks vs. Missouri Tigers
KU_B, it's unfortunate that you had to sit next to classless people during the game. As I'm sure you know they do NOT represent the majority of Mizzou fans, and certainly not any of the Mizzou fans I know. Of course, as a KU alum you have probably attended many more events between the two schools than me (I'm not a MU alum, just a huge fan from Missouri) and have a different perspective based on your experiences than I do. I've been "involved" with classless 49ers fans and classless Cubs fans, but realize they are the few and not the majority. The Kansas-Missouri rivalry goes back 100+ years, and is about more than football... but the game is just that, a football game. Congrats on a great year, but despite your unfortunate experience I will be pulling hard for the Tigers to beat OU and make it to the BCS Championship game. Tom

That's a shocking response, even for a fan. So what if he was only at .093, he WAS OUT OF CONTROL or he wouldn't have been asleep in the car at a stop light. I define wasted as out of control. If you were drunk and arrested in the same manner, I'd also say you were out of control. Legally drunk and drunk are not the same, he may have been "drunk" at much less than .093 since everyone is different, the .08 is only a prosecutorial standard. He could have just as easily "dosed off" at 80 mph... what then? I've also done some stupid things in my life, but there is a difference in pointing out that he could have killed someone perfectly innocent, than there is stoning the guy.... I'm willing to bet if the circumstances involved him running over one of your family members, you would have a different response. Having been personally affected by a drunk driver, I probably have a different take on this than a Cardinal's fan. no offense intended. I'm not really sure why my response is "shocking". If you re-read both my posts I am clear that it was wrong what he did, it's illegal and he's very fortunate something much worse didn't happen. I'm just stating my opinion, which is he deserves to be dealt with fairly. You're right, as a Cardinal fan my opinion will differ from yours... just as it will differ from the Red Sox fan who made the initial post. And I have never been affected by a drunk driver, which should have far more impact on our opinions than which team we cheer for. No offense taken, I respect everyone's viewpoint. Tom

You're right, he does deserve whatever he gets... which I'm guessing is the same thing any of us would want if we put ourselves in a similar situation: 1) A chance to apologize, sincerely, in public and to the national media (which he has done, although few people would ever hear about our poor judgement); 2) To be dealt with fairly, within the confines of the law; and 3) Be allowed to make whatever restitution was deemed appropriate by the court. Driving while intoxicated is wrong, and illegal. Something much more serious could have happened to himself or someone else... thank God it didn't. But Tony is no different than any of us here - except for the perfect one's who have never made a mistake. He's a stand-up guy who has and will handle this the right way. I'd like to know how many others who are in the public's eye would. Tom

According to news report (and assuming they are accurate) his BAC was 0.093, just slightly over the legal limit of 0.08. I'm not sure that qualifies as "wasted", and in fact could easily happen with not much more than a couple glasses of wine at dinner. If, after a very long day and a late dinner with wine it certainly is not beyond reason that someone could dose off at a stop light. I'm in no way condoning what Tony did, or trying to make excuses, he was wrong and we all know it. As an outsider looking in it appears he has always held himself, and his team, to very high standards. He made a mistake and I'm willing to bet he is very remorseful for it. But having done stupid things before in my life I will not throw stones at Tony, or anyone else. Tom
