Favorite rod and reels
The reels look to be less than a Black Max. The rods are no different. So low end stuff.

This is the right place to ask and thank you for the info.

KastKing Spartacus
Just need to verify a common problem on this reel. The magnetic brakes do not touch or reach the spool. There are too far. Has anyone seen this or know about this problem? One guy on youtube stated he added small washers to lift the strip. let me know

Left vs right handed baitcasters
if you deep sea fish, the conventional reels have the handle on the right. the right hand or dominant hand is wenching the fish up. the power handle to fight the fish. the left hand is holding on to the rod while the reel does the work. have you seen the guys fishing for marlin? the same idea applies here for bass. power the fish out of heavy cover with your right hand. keep the rod tension with the left. I can use both. I'm using a left hand reel for flipping and pitching this year. I want to see how it feels. I can use a spinning set up just fine so this will be fun.

Videos ?
I just started with the process of recording. I bought a off brand Go Pro knock off because of cost. I will add a PVC pipe to my trax on my kayak for above my head shots/video. I will also place a 3m sticky mount on the front of the kayak for another angle. I am excited to see where this takes me. For sure, not a youtube guy.

4k vs 1080p bass fishing vids
mods move if not in the right spot. I just bought a 4k action camera. I have been researching, learning and getting a handle of this technology. For fishing (kayak fishing for me), what does everyone use? 4k, 2k or 1080p What are the pros and cons? Does it make a huge difference if not youtubing it or just for your own recordings? @Glenn, what do you use for your youtube videos?

Thanks guys. I can't wait to use my Plus.

KastKing Spartacus Plus
I just got the Plus for Christmas and I want to make it my flipping, pitching, jigs and heavy cover reel. Anyone use this reel for the same application and how does it hold up? It can be the Plus or original Spartacus I am aware of the carbon body and the flexing.

Where should I move to?
My 2 cents: You and your wife need to take a trip to Ukiah Ca. Fly into SF and head north on hwy 101. You get small town feel, mountains, Clear Lake pigs, trout, smallies, wine country and the Pacific is a short drive to Fort Bragg and Mendocino. It might be pricey but you will not get the heavy winters and humid summers. Google Ukiah and take a west coast trip in the Spring to hit the massive females at Clear.

Son in Cali. needs advice.
Crypt, thank your son for his commitment and service. you must be a proud father. Thank you. Here is what I found for you: https://www.tripsavvy.com/san-diego-county-lakes-for-fishing-2937307 https://sdfish.com/freshwater-fishing/ Also, he can drive up to Orange county and hit up the LA reservoirs like Diamond. But, if he can fish the big blue with his bass fishing gear. He is not limited because of his gear. Plenty of nice fish he can catch. lastly, welcome to California

Swimbait must haves
a cheap alternative to the Hudds, Storm has some trout swimbaits. Walmart carries them. My wife bought me a pack. Not bad for a starter swimbait. Savage and Castaic are probably a step above the Storm, all Wally World baits. Optimum, Hudds,R2S and 3:16 are great baits.

Jig or Swimbait?
Drop shot would work with that sandy bottom. But keep the weight and lure closer, power shot is what I hear they are calling it. I fish a small pond, texas rig senkos work, slow presentation. Also, try a small swimbait, 2-3 inches, to search and locate the bass. If you can, borrow a kayak and get on the water.

Pond bass in winter
This past weekend, small pond fishing in the early morning, 7am-9am. It was about 60 degrees for most of the morning, no clouds. I was using the 2 inch pogy swimbait by powerbait. I was pitching and flipping into grass, rods and cover in shallow areas. They destroyed the swimbait. try going small or finesse

Help me pick out my new baitcaster
You might think I am joking but get the Black Max. Everyone on here will agree, the black max is the most reliable and used reel for beginners. Some seasoned guys still use ole' reliable. I do. Clean it, lube it and show it some love, that black max will last you for years. At 100 buck, you can get two.

Swimbaits set-up
Sounds good to me. I fish from a kayak and I will be throwing the same baits. I am using a Curado and a heavy Shock rod. So I went with the cheaper (price) rod and I can use it also for heavy cover flipping/pitching. I am going with 50# braid and no leader. I have my baitcaster really tight to avoid a backlash.

Let's Talk Yaks
Tarpon 100 is the top kayak in that size. The Pescador follows but does not have the accessories. Feelfree Lure 10 is probably the next best.

Daiwa Fuego CT
I know this is an old post. The Exceler is still available. The Daiwa website still promotes them. Is there a date as to when it was discontinued?

Bad Bass fishing in California?
Cahoots, if he can't put bass on the boat, he's nothing and let him talk. Proof is in the pics. Cali is a great bass state. Looking for the giants and the numbers is the fun part of the Cali game. I only worry about my PB, my numbers and my skills and I let everyone else do their thing. Enjoy the Cali bass fishing and if Cali was not a great place to fish, no one would come.

rod selection for kayak
I might be different than most. I only take 3 rods; heavy, MH and spinning rod. no matter what lure I decide to use, I will tie it on to one of the three. I've read and done enough kayak fishing to know that one rod can handle multiple techniques. For example; my heavy can handle swimbaits, frogging, t-rig creatures for flipping/pitching and any heavy lure. My MH does almost everything else including buzz, t-rig worm, t-rig for cover, crank baits and so on. Spinning does senkos, small swimbaits, poppers and so on. Is it perfect? nope. But, I catch fish and fish don't care about our rods, they want to eat.
