  1. Berkley Shock rod, 7' mh, fast, it does a lot but not all. Spinning set up for light stuff. Heavy rod 7'6 for swimbaits, frog, punching and heavy lures. 3 rods will cover everything from the bank, kayak or boat. My 2 cents
  2. Look at Wilderness systems kayaks and demo as many as you can.
  3. Anyone using the new Berkley Shock Rod? I want the 7 foot Heavy rod.
  4. LOL, this made me laugh and I could not resist. Quantum is also a POS Chinese reel. Lews and Abu come from the same factory.
  5. I have never flipped. But I know the day is coming. I have learned to fish with minimal gear. I don't take 4-5 rods and all my tackle. One or 2 rods and one tackle box. If I lose it, it's only a small amount. So try to take what you need.
  6. What Camman said is a perfect trip. I will add the Pacific for Rock Cod; Half Moon Bay.
  7. I'm bias to Wilderness System Tarpon 10 foot. Look at them used to make your budget.
  8. I agree with everyone. And I will repeat, get on it a few times and look at what you need and not what you want or see others having. This is your kayak, make it yours. Price and brand is not important. You feeling comfortable and resourceful is most the important. I can't live without my trax system on my Tarpon. I use it for everything. No need to drill holes in the kayak. Outside of that, I can live without. Also, be an expert in PVC. You can make great mods with it.
  9. Buy a kayak and avoid the costs of a boat.
  10. I fish from a kayak so I can't help with the seat. But, in Bako, the California Aqueduct is huge. If you are on Facebook, look up a group called Poor Man Aqueduct Fishing. Those anglers are always helpful and the admin is named Ricky, good guy. Reach out to him. They fish for catfish, some bass but stripers are king in the Duct. Also in Bako, the Kern river and lake Isabella is big. There is a few man made lakes with restrictions. Call up Bob's Bait Bucket and Cope's Rod and tackle for info. There is a trout derby this weekend at one of the lakes. They just stocked it and the lake is closed all week. Bakersfield is very limited but there is some spots. Also, if you want to make a drive south, Pyramid and Castaic. The bass club that I follow is called Cen Cal Elite Bass Tournaments. they have a facebook, instagram and website. Reach out to them. But, they are a 40 minutes drive north up here in Porterville and fish Lake Success, Lake Kaweah and our central lakes. These are all rock and cement dam reservoirs so drop shot, jigs, bush hogs and cranks along the rocks is the best options. The pool at Lake success is at 8% so the levels are really low. We also have fly fishing in the mountains for wild trout. But for the big girls, Eastman Lake in Chowchilla but that is a two hour drive for you. the bass average 3-4 lbs and only one can be taken home if it meets requirements. So the bass grow big at Eastman. You can't go wrong with some Central coast ocean fishing if you decide to go over the hill. Perch from the shore is cool. Basic carolina rig with MH bass gear and sand worms from Yum. Pier fishing is also cool with shrimp or squid. But the best thing to do, on the way here and on the way back, take a day or two and fish the delta. There are KOAs and RV parking along the Delta. You can hit the banks for the pigs with Jigs, frogs and drop shot in the cover. There are many guides up there. The Bass Pro is in Manteca, call them up for some help. There's always activities and tournaments on the delta. Rent a kayak if you have to. Look up this spot tikilagoon.com for RV parking and enjoy the Delta. I'm here if you need any help. You must go to the Buck Owen Crystal Palace. Good food and good country music. Take your wife to the Bluffs for a romantic walk at sunset to earn fishing points. LOL And you are coming during the playoffs of high school football. Plenty to do and the weather will be in the 70 s during the day and 40s at night.
  11. I'm trying flipping and pitching with a left reel, little weird but getting use to it. I will use a right for moving baits, speed. Buzzbait is a good example. Try to use the left for one technique and the right for another. See how that goes. It takes time and practice. But, if you fish once a week, like me, it will take you longer.
  12. Big 5 has a casting rod made by Sabre (Penn/Pure Fishing) that is 7' MH. They have them on sale for 40 from 60. Anyone have one or have used this Rod. Sabre S.C.I Graphite Composite Rod
  13. mono leader with braid Fluoro is not that great
  14. I have the lefty S Plus. I use it for flipping, pitching, punching and jigs. I have braid on it. I have no issues with it. It is a solid reel. You have to play with it until you find the sweet spot. I took it out just to adjust it on the water using jigs. I can now throw everything with very little brake adjusting and only use the tension knob. Get use to the reel and you will not regret it.
  15. Thank you for the info
  16. I found this rod for $40 on Ebay and Amazon. I can't find it on a store shelf. Does anyone have one and your opinion of it would be great? I want the 7' MH for mainly jigs, ploppers, punching and heavier applications. My other options are Diawa Luna and Quantum Graphex, same power and length. Thank you.
  17. 7 foot MH Berkley Shock rod. Great product, can be used for many applications and cheap in price. Walmart has them on sale. That is all you need. And I will add this, 30# braid for both.
  18. Lews is the new Abu Garcias. Same reels with a cooler name.
  19. I'm from the central valley. Welcome to the sport and you will not be disappointed when you finally get addicted. You have a Bass Pro shop in San Jose. You can start there. Go in and ask for seminars or guides. Do you use a boat, kayak or a shore guy? There are groups to join like NorCal Kayak Anglers. Many people in your area use kayaks. You can go to a tournament or an outing with a group of people to learn. There are many good and friendly anglers that are willing to teach and increase the sport. Just ask. What lakes have you tried? have you been to the delta by Tracy/Brentwood area?
  20. I have not handled the Toro. But, if you are looking for that mid-large reel, check out the Piscifun Thunder.
  21. Go look at the Diawa Lexa 300 or 400, if you want a big baitcaster instead of a round reel.
  22. Save your money and get Mono. With the money you save, spoil your wife. A spoiled wife, happy fishing life.
