Judging rod power?
Different manufactures/designers apply different elements in blank design. Tube diameter, tube thickness, progression of the taper and the materials all contribute to establish both powers and actions. Generally the design concept used one manufacturer will be found within a series or multiple series. When you find that sweet power action rod, look further. One of the positive aspects that Dobyns and Edge have is consistency in the progression of the powers while maintaining the integrity of the stated actions. That’s not to say other brands don’t but these two do.

gear that surprised you......
Shimano STX XT casting reel. Found one for $112 and that’s a great reel that casts really well. Daiwa SV 80 for $105. This a better casting model than I expected. Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog! This creature bait is great. The bulk bag price is darn good. Great color options too. Siebert Outdoors Fogy. Mike has put a lot of effort to make this bait special and the price is so affordable. Edge Delta series rods. If you are patient they run some aggressive pricing specials and the wait is so worth it. Bitter Baits stick worm. I run the 5 inch with a weighted wacky hook and they work. Awesome colors and bulk packs make them a tremendous value.

Lures, thinning the herd
This is a perfect example of why you should rationalize the need to expand your inventory. It’s’ really easy for me. I just tell myself my grandsons can split it up. At some point Ian and Dez will be stocked up for life.

Circuit board bills
I have some OSP and Bill Lewis fitted with CB lips. The run really well. There is a minute amount of flex. They are wearing very well and I’ve yet to break one. If you hit wood they deflect well. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy bait with that lip material, especially the Bill Lewis ATV.

Talk about Tackle----
I organize my tackle, combos and other necessary items like a pantry. The only items that stay in the boat are my terminal boxes, spinnerbait boxes and Senko bag. When I plan a trip, I stock the the boat with specifics.

Heading to Potholes WA this week, never been, looking for tips
Yes, 176 is the staple. I only throw 1/4 ounce whether 4 or 5 inch. I forget to mention that a number of rock formations should be showing at the Linde Coolie end of the dam. There are saddles between many of them. Those saddles can be great. I run a Deep Little N in those locations with good results. Perch, goby and chartreuse blue back are good.

Rod's getting broke in?
Rods are not like baseball gloves. No break in required.

The water should be at draw down. The face of the dam will be good. Medium running crankbaits in perch colors should be effective. Hula grubs, tubes and Ned rigs will all come into play. The Linn Cooley channel is worth a try. Fish can be as deep as 40 plus on the dam end. The other side of the lake should have the fish pulling out. The face of those dunes and outside the main creek accesses will have largemouth and some smallmouth. The fish get in shallow at day break for an hour. After that I would move out off the shorelines and points and throw shakey heads, football jigs, larger neds and a half ounce Dark Sleeper. Look for the sunken pallets. You’ll get bit.
