  1. I used a table knife to spread it, an old credit card to smooth it out, and taped it off with blue masking tape. I wanted to use sheets of a material called Gator guard, but It was going to be difficult to get here. The JB Weld was cheaper, and is very durable. It took some time time to apple but I am happy with the results.
  2. I have always wondered why many people recommend using black baits in muddy water because they are more visible, but many people also recommend coloring the line black to make it less visible.
  3. After watching many You Tube videos on kayak keel guards I decided on JB Weld to protect my Kayak. I decided on JB Weld because it was locally available, and easy to install. I tried a small patch on the bow where most of the damage occurs. After a couple months the JB Weld held up better than I expected. Today I added more on the places on my kayak that get the most scrapes and scratches. I purchased the JB Weld at my local Home Depot, and it wasn't cheap but should last a long time. I used 13 packs with the total cost around $70 at current exchange rates. I wasn't able to find bigger tubes, so I had to buy the small packages. Larger amounts would have brought the cost down, but like many things, finding the larger amounts was more difficult in Mexico than it would have been in the states. I try not to abuse my kayak by dragging it over places that will damage the bottom, but I don't baby the boat. I bought my kayak to use and after 5 years it definitely looks used.
  4. Even the Bait Monkey thinks this may be excessive. He is fine with getting 11 $100 baits, but that much in one bait is even beyond that greedy primates limit. I noticed the weight on this swimbait is 22 oz. Now the Monkey is rethinking his opinion. A bait that heavy would need a new rod and reel, so maybe it is a good idea. I reminded him that my wife would not understand spending that much money, and he slinked off to his corner where he belongs. Just out of curiosity, what rod would comfortably cast a 22 oz lure?
  5. I don't know how to make a floater suspend, but I sure can show you how to make them sink like a rock. Precision casting into a big rock, is my most common method, but stepping on them, comes in a close second, with an assortment of other imaginative random techniques coming in third.
  6. I rely on hope and luck.
  7. Back lashes occur on bait casters. Birds nests usually are on spinning gear. Both require unique talents to fix.
  8. I use both GPS and buoys. I need all the help I can get. One time I gave directions to a fellow guide on how to find a small creek loaded with salmon in Alaska. I had fished the hard to find place for a few years. The mane river had many side channels and it was difficult to find the correct one that would lead to the tributary with the salmon. There was always a plane parked on a gravel bar, that marked the location of the turn off. I told the guide to take the cut off where the plane was parked. He ran out of gas looking for the plane, and had to float down river until he ran in to another boater who loaned him some gas to get back to the lodge. He never did find the creek. It ended up the owner of the plane actually flew in to town that day. It was the first time in 4 years that I had ever heard of the plane being moved. The guide was not happy and told me I should have given him better directions. I told him the next time to turn at the big cotton wood tree. He said which big cotton wood tree, I said the one next to the plane.
  9. My wife new me well before we got married so all is fine. She has been mostly successful kicking the Bait Monkey out of the house, but that is something I appreciate. I have tried to send that old friend packing more than once, and wasn't able to on my own. With some loving help from my wife, he has had to move on to greener pastures.
  10. No. I have taken up other water sports such as kite boarding, and surfing, but all I could think of while participating in these sports, was how could I attach a fishing rod to my board, or was that bait I just saw break the surface. If I am on the water I am fishing.
  11. 1- Getting out of bed in time to go fishing 2- Buying tackle 3- Getting tackle in to boat or kayak 4- Picking out back lashes 5- Untangling birds nests. 6- Getting lures out of trees 7- Casting near targets, not in them. 8- Setting hook into bass not snags. 9- Landing bass 10- Making bass appear larger in photographs.
  12. Get a hold of me if you are ever in Puerto Vallarta. I will make sure you catch a rooster fish. They are a truly unique sport fish.
  13. All the lakes in my area will be on a hot bite, but I can assure you, the one I'm fishing at will be slow.
  14. I'm not caught, but I have to admit I might have temporarily been hooked. Besides I'm sure that bass was caught on a spinnerbait, and the guy is just trying to sell $300 swimbaits.
  15. What a bass. Of course the Monkey had me Google 3:16 lure company. All their hard baits are over $200 and most of them are sold out. Has any one here used them? Does any one know what model the bait in the picture is?
  16. If someone else cleans and cooks the fish, I will eat them. I like to catch them.
  17. I'm 61 and find it difficult to do simple house hold chores, go to the grocery store, or wash my wife's car, but I have no problems loading my kayak, driving for 4 four hours, fishing for 12 hours, setting up a small tent, sleeping on the ground, waking up fishing for 12 more hours, loading my kayak, and driving 4 hours to my home. As soon as I get home I definitely start to feel my age again.
  18. Do you want to be bored or broke. Your choice. Be warned, once you start buying crankbaits looking for that perfect one for you situation the Bait Monkey will climb on your back and never let go. Maybe fishing the same boring bait isn't so bad. I will say, buying and catching bass on crankbaits is a fun way to go broke.
  19. When fishing plastic worms I only throw Junebug, green pumpkin, and Watermelon Candy. I also throw black and blue seven inch Senkos, but that is only becasue I can't find 7inch ones in Junebug anymore. All other colors of worms I don't catch anything with. The fact that I never fish any other colors may be a contributing factor to my lack of success.
  20. That is the same kind of out of the box thinking the Bait Monkey uses when he is trying to max out my credit card. Are you related to him?
  21. Thinking about fishing all of the time is why my parents were not able to put a bumper sticker on their car that said their kid is on the honor roll. They could have put a bumper sticker on their car that said their kid landed the biggest bass ever caught out of rock creek, but I guess they didn't sell that sticker at the PTA meetings. I sure hope God wasn't too offended when as a young boy, while watching a baptism at church I wondered how many bass could live in the baptism tub, and how much better it would be to check out the action of my new lures there rather than our bath tub at home. I am certain that no where in the good book does it say it is a sin to day dream about bass fishing during church, but I'm sure my mother would have not approved and at that time of my life there was not a big difference between the power of God and the power of my mother.
  22. The crappie also eat a lot of smaller bait that the bass eat. Until the bass get to a certain size, crappie and bass are in direct competition for food. It may or may not help the bass if there are less crappie, only time will tell. Forage that doesn't directly compete with the bass for food, may have a bigger effect on bass populations, if there is a drastic decline in numbers. If you like to eat crappie, a 30% decline in population of crappie makes for many empty frying pans.
  23. I still have my Heddon Mark 1V I bought in the spring of 1977
  24. I had planned on spending any free time I had this summer to fish, chasing only bass. A friend called and wanted me to go fish for Rooster Fish south of PV with him on his boat. I tried to tell him I only bass fish on my free time, but he is a good friend and insisted, so I broke my promise to myself and agreed to go. I'm glad I I did because I have fished this area for 17 years and this was the best single day of fishing for roosters in my life. We landed over 40 including this giant. Fishing was fast and furious, and I hadn't run a busy cockpit like that in a long time. The other angler was not experienced and I ended up having to be a full time deck hand. It was just like riding a bike, it all came back after the first big flurry of bites, and I had a great time.
  25. I have tried over a dozen braids. I fished Power Pro for many years. Now I use gray Diawa J Braid 8 for everything, except for my big game reels which get Jerry Brown hollow braid.
