Anyone used Nikwax on their Goretex fishing rain wear?
"Sadly, all my 28 year old clothes have shrunk.....I toild my wife not to put them in the dryer" Mine too, but the camo duck coat is an XXL and if I don't put the Thinsulate liner jacket in it I can use it over a t-shirt for fishing on rainy days.

Anyone used Nikwax on their Goretex fishing rain wear?
Thanks. I have a 28-year-old 3-in-1 Columbia duck hunting parka that has a slow leak in the center of the back. It's not leaking on a seam so this is worth a shot. "Recommended for technical clothing, synthetic sleeping bags, rain and ski jackets, GORE-TEX, Patagonia, North Face, Columbia, and Arc'teryx"

Rods out of stock. Sign of the times?
I ordered a rod at 4 pm EDT on Monday and it came before noon today. Whew, less than 3 days, IN to VA. I never even got a shipping notice or a tracking number. But here came the little postal vehicle backing down the drive. But yeah, things have been in short supply. I'd been looking for a new crankbait rod for a couple of months - on line - and got tired of reading reviews while waiting on Loomis and Megabass. I thought about getting another Conquest casting rod for the heck of it and they were scarce too. Then Friday I got an email about a Dobyns sale and thought about it over the weekend and figured what the heck, nearly everyone loves the Champion 705CB, And I had almost $20 in old store credits from a couple of years ago. Icing on the cake. Okay, everybody was right. This is a really nice rod. I might do a little light sanding to contour the cork a little more, but the action is great. Weather forecast for tomorrow - 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40. But it'll be warm.

Brainfarts while rigging?
Tuesday we were making a short slow run so I sat down, cut off the old spinnerbait, took out a new spinnerbait, and tied the old one back on. Duh. Earlier in the morning I'd found myself looking at my fingers and trying to remember how to tie a uni-knot. I've been tying them for at least 40 years. After two or three seconds of confusion I simply closed my eyes and let my fingers tie it. I first learned how to really tie a uni-knot on the beach at night in the wind.

Conquest 842C, Buy or Not?
Nice, let us know what you think. I need a push or maybe a shove to get a Medium. So far I have a 783C, 843C, 844C and 843S. It's not like I need a medium...

What's new with marine batteries
I've heard house battery for decades it seems around larger boats, the kind with berths and a galley, etc. It may have started with the RV crowd - the house batteries vs the chassis/running gear batteries. I haven't found AGM batteries to cost 3x the price of the $99 Group 31's that everyone I know used to buy at Walmart until some folks got some duds a few years back. Recently they/we have switched to Duracell Ultra Group 31's from Batteries Plus or Sam's Club. BP has them for $244 minus 10% if you order on line and pick them up at the store and then there's a $10 rebate. So if you have a trade in to avoid the core charge they run around $210 each plus tax. They charge faster and easier and if they last twice as long as the old Walmart specials all will be well.

Spring 2021
I know I do, but it was 29 this morning at 7 and there was a heavy frost on everything. It was pretty though but didn't stop the dog from chasing the deer and turkey out of the yard before he settled down to eat breakfast.

Victory Is Near
I was about to complain that TW doesn't have them listed and I have a gift card burning a hole in my pocket. I just checked... they have them. I see on the FishUSA site the 7'2" MHM Power Target Cranker weighs 3.4 oz. Decisions, decisions. Wait and see if the Loomis 845 ever comes in, get a Dobyns 705 or take a chance on the least expensive of the group. Think of the money I'd save. (You know what I mean, think of the money I could spend on other stuff.)

BFS? I Don't Get It
Hooking bass on tiny crappie outfits has been fun for decades. Landing the large ones has proven difficult over the years when they wrap the line around a stump or something. ____________ "A standard NBA basketball has a diameter between 9.43 and 9.51 inches. In the WNBA, the basketball has a diameter of between 9.07 and 9.23 inches. Basketballs used in the NCAA are between 9.39 and 9.55 inches for the men and 9.07 and 9.23 inches for the women."

Dogwood Tree Watch
And don't confuse dogwoods with the shadbush trees that flower in March and early April in eastern Virginia. Shadbush, aka serviceberry. Fwiw, it seems that what used to be mostly seen off the road in the woods is now being grown by some for yard decoration.

Do you need a trailer with a spinner bait?
99.5% of the time I use a trailer on a spinnerbait. Usually a curl tail grub of 3" to 6" and sometimes a paddle tail or plain fish tail looking thing.

Saltwater Boat Names
I used to know a guy who totally redid a very large, old steel sailboat. He wanted a name that had something to do with rust. I came up with the Effie O. II It doesn't help you much.

Spinnerbait
"These freshwater guys are learning what we've thrown in marshes for years." I buy mine at the Stop and Shop/Exxon on the beach road in Kill Devil Hills. That's the first village north of Nags Head NC. Not only do they have tackle and stuff, they have flip flops, clothes, a deli, a grocery, beer, hermit crabs, incense, and free air (very important at the beach). We're headed that way tomorrow on our way to Ocracoke. Maybe I'll get a deli sandwich and enjoy the view across the street. And buy some tackle of course.

I've had a little luck with red and orange. (Chicago Maroon and Burnt Orange are the actual team colors)

Plastic Worms for the 2021 Season
I'm down to my last 9 or 10 bags of Ol' Monsters in Black and a couple of bags of Black Grape. And a few bags of various dark colors of the 12" Magnums. Time to order another few dozen of the black I suppose. I have bags of Senkos and other worm-like things, but the black worms get all the attention.

What makes you cover or not cover your rods?
I have neoprene rod sleeves for my Conquests and covers for my best reels. I don't have rod lockers or a rod rack in my truck. The rod sleeves are $10 to $14 of insurance when I'm bouncing down a rocky road or backing the trailer over a bank into the water. The other rods and reels? I baby them a little, but I won't miss them when they're gone.

Ever Shiner / slip-bobber fish for Bass?
"I can't remember the last time I bought minnows." I can, it was 3 winters ago. We bundled up on a sunny cold morning and bought 4 dozen jumbo minnows and a few big goldfish from a reputable bait shop. I suppose they got them from Perry's minnow farm in Suffolk like everyone else, but I digress. Perry used to get them from Arkansas fwiw. By lunchtime 2.5 dozen had rolled over and died. Yes, we know how to aerate, etc and take care of minnows. It was just bad luck, old minnows, whatever. An expensive experience. The goldfish saved the day.

Even launching a boat can be dangerous
I read about this when it happened, but there weren't many details. Turns out he was 35 and tried to get back into the boat. www.smithmountaineagle.com/news/article_e6c1ecc0-6e44-11eb-bc10-c751faea9425.html "...a 35-year-old man who was handling the boat, somehow fell into the water about 25 feet from the ramp, according to Pearson. The boat continued drifting out into the cove, and Haynes kept attempting to climb back into the boat but was unsuccessful. As he swam back to shore, an onlooker noticed he was struggling and jumped in the water to try to help him get to safety. Two other onlookers threw them a life jacket, tied with a rope, and threw it out to help the two get back faster. Once they arrived back at the dock, EMS was quick to begin CPR, Pearson said, but he was later declared dead. "We want to thank the kind citizens who were at the Penhook boat ramp that day for trying to save Mr. Haynes life and want to send our condolences out to his family and friends," Pearson said. "

Ever Shiner / slip-bobber fish for Bass?
"I guess I gotta look closer to see what the Bass Pros are really doing!" They're following the rule books trying to make a living. The rule books are written by the owners of the businesses that are paying the bills. Then there's the rest of the bass fishing world that just likes to go fishing. It has been fun to watch the little world of tournament fishing years ago scratch their way up from nothing and now they're on cable tv regularly and paying good money. The people I fish with don't even watch tournaments or read about them, much less fish them. One guy used to fish them as a semi-pro and did some weekend gigs for Shimano, but he quit the grind in the '80s and stuck to running his 7 day a week retail business. But boy, there for a while I was getting some great deals on Shimano gear. The best deal was an open box demo reel that came from a factory rep. It was a just released first generation 4500 Baitrunner for $40 (I still surf fish). We still laugh about the $40 because my buddy only paid $32 for it. He's fun to fish with until he starts retelling the stories about the times the reps would have him take visiting pros out for a day on local lakes in his boat and he'll name drop one famous name after another. www.gameandfishmag.com/editorial/50-year-evolution-of-tournament-bass-fishing/192993 ctes

Ever Shiner / slip-bobber fish for Bass?
"I can't see how anyone can take credit for a minnow's work." What? You dive in and grab them with your bare hands or maybe with your teeth? Oh, you use a rod, reel, painted lures and hooks loaded up with colored plastics and scents and stuff? I see. You know the lakes and ponds are chock full of minnows. Scads and schools and shoals and whatnot. Lots 'o minnows everywhere. There's more to it than putting a shiner or a nightcrawler on a hook and taking a nap. At $2 per jumbo you'll go broke and be going home in short order. You still have to find the big fish first.

Ever Shiner / slip-bobber fish for Bass?
Sure, but shiners are so fragile. Buy a jumbo goldfish or two and fish most of the day if you're lucky. And if they're legal in your state. www.fishingduo.com/is-fishing-with-goldfish-illegal-laws-for-all-50-states
