How far south do Small mouth range from?
The Suwannee River has a cousin of the smallmouth unique to the river: http://myfwc.com/WILDLIFEHABITATS/Freshwaterfish_SuwanneeBass.htm Otherwise, a few lakes in Texas have smallmouth populations. Your best bet in the Mid South is the Tennessee River below Wilson Dam, technically Pickwick Reservoir. However, the Great Lakes and other lakes in that region are FAR SUPERIOR for both numbers and average size. If I were chosing a specific destination, Lake Erie, St. Clair or Lake Champlain would top the list. 8-)

Crucial or IMX
If the question is money, that's a personal decision. If the question is "Which is a better rod?", the answer is IMX. If you decide to buy the Crucial, sooner or later you'll wish you had chosen the G. Loomis. It doesn't work like that the other way around. 8-)

Hybrid
Yes, Hybrid floats. The smaller diameters are "virtually" invisible. However, the line is not a pure fluorocarbon, but a bonded blend of nylon and fluoro. In clear water the best match is green, but "clear" is very close. In stained water, smoke is the better choice. I usually fish smoke because I prefer the way it looks on my reels! 8-)

Nice fish, great pic! 8-)

Crucial or IMX
IMX This is the series that set G. Loomis apart from the crowd and made them what they are today. You will be VERY pleased. p.s. You're really going to like the CH50MG, too! That will match up well with the MBR783C. 8-)

Transporting rods in vehicle
If the tube is properly secured, it's safe. I use a Bazuka secured with four rubber straps to the side of my roof-top rack. No issues. 8-)

Rods- "Power" and "Action" Defined
Generally, lower priced rods do not list the action, but it is generally fast, unless it's noticably slow (some Ugly Sticks for example). Otherwise, the action is listed with power. Examples are G. Loomis: MBR844C, 84" or 7', 4 power = heavy; labled heavy power/ fast action. St Croix Avid: AVC70MF = 7' medium power, fast action. 8-)

Just how much drag do you need?
Well Mike, You da MAN!, but I don't think this is the right advice for the vast majority of our members. Your level of skill allows you a great deal of latitude. For others, cranking down their drag will result in broken rods, snapped line and lost fish. If you're fishing for big smallmouth, I feel this technique is totally inappropriate. The surge at the boat will cost people "the fish of a lifetime". 8-)

Wilson Lake, AL
I'm fishing Wilson this Saturday. Does anyone know what's been going on at this lake? I have searched the net for a fishing report, but came up empty handed. Comments are appreciated. 8-)

Howdy from Texas
Welcome aboard! T is for Texas, H is for Haggard... We have a few other Texans on board, but as far as I know, none on your lake. I suspect most of the guys close would like to know a little more about your brown fish. 8-)

Tubes...?
Hmm...That might be true. I rank tubes as one of my top three producers, just below the Fat Ika and Senko. I fish Gitzit, Micro Munch Tackle and Mizmo. 8-)
