Guntersville has some smallies, but it's not a "smallmouth lake". The lake is noted for big numbers of largemouth in the 5-6 lb range. DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER, the fish should be shallow and very aggressive. The grass will be thick, but not tall yet. Four years ago we caught the majority of our fish in the grass throwing lipless crankbaits. Topwater should be red hot! Otherwise, soft plastics and spinnerbaits just about covers it.

Yesterday morning I saw Big O's post on his latest outing. Great fish and beautiful pic! I decided to copy his MO and rigged up my new GMAN Big O jigs with the Rage Tail Craw, Falcon color. Jumped in the truck and headed to Collierville, a public pond that has not been too productive for me. I fished for an hour without a single bite, but persistence paid off. Tap-tap, FISH ON! The pond was originally a gravel pit. The edges have been filled in, out about 15-20 yards, so nobody drowns. Baitfish and predators generally troll the ledge where shallow meets deep water. This makes fishing difficult. The bass was on the ledge, a long cast out. This made the fight long and exciting. This was the biggest bass I had ever caught on the pond and my best fish this year, period! I looked at my prize and a conversation I had with Big O came to mind. My fish wasn't half the size of the one you see in his post, but it was huge for the water I fish. He told me this a few weeks ago, "Wherever I am fishing, I target the biggest fish that lives in that lake". Hmm... If you don't live in one of the Big Four states, double digits are rare and it's unlikely you're going to land any the size Big O catches on a regular basis. On the other hand, catching a lake record might be just as challenging. Don't get me wrong, I would love to catch some of those Texas monsters, but for the rest of us, maybe we should have more appreciation for the "big" bass we have a legitimate chance of catching. I really appreciate Big O's insight. It's something I will always remember.

Not at all. If you decide to buy "technique specific" equipment, then get a crankbait rod and a slower reel (more torque). My reel of choice for deep cranking applications is the CTE200GT, 5.0:1. On the other hand, for lipless and shallow running cranks, I fish a fast reel on a medium power/ moderate action rod (Avid AVC70MM/ Chronarch 50MG).

Braided line has significantly improved my jig fishing.

We don't have ice.

I think you already made your point...We got it...You don't like fishing for bass. Live bait is challenging, ask Fish Chris. The fact that you may catch better fish is a bonus. I like "fishing", but I like "catching" a lot more. I fish for largemouth almost exclusively with lures, but have no problem with live bait. When it comes to trophy smallmouth on the Tennessee River, minnows rule!

Air conditioning. Widespread availability of this creature comfort made the South liveable. I grew up in K.C. without air. We moved to Denver in 1980 and didn't buy an air conditioner until my daughter was born in 1989. Now we live in Memphis. I couldn't live here without it.

Well, we're letting this stuff go for awhile. The "Senko Wave" seems to have dissipated, so... We'll see how this works out.

I'm thinking C-rig using a Floating Rapala on gravel bars. There may be an opportunity to give this a try on the Tennessee River next weekend. Great article! :D
